Lehtonen faces a few shots

Your morning report from Thrashers practice Tuesday before the team leaves for Boston and I get two days off for the holiday.

Kari Lehtonen, in full pads, was on the ice before practice. He spent some time skating and a lot of time stretching. He took a few shots from Jim Slater or Boris Valabik as players reported to the ice. He left just before practice started and signed autographs for fans in attendance.

Nik Antropov is not taking part in the skate so the practice lines looks like this:

Blue: Kovalchuk-Slater-Afinogenov

Orange: Kozlov-Peverley-Little

Gray:  Kane-White-Armstrong

Red: Boulton-Reasoner-Slater

I will check back after practice and interviews with updates.

Oh God no. Slater, centering Kovy and Afinogenov! Hey, at least they’re FAST!

Wait, you don’t think?? You don’t think that this is a WADDELL Negotiation tactic, do ya?? “Here ya go, Ilya. I got you that CENTER you always wants. It’s … TAH-DAH!! Jim Slater!!” New contract, here we come!!

Kidding. Just kidding. Everyone exhale. Relax. I’m sure the contract talks are progressing very nicely. I do have an UPDATE on them. “Don Waddell has realized that Kovalchuk is a pending unrestricted free agent.” And on the other side of the ledger, “Jay Grossman, Kovy’s agent, has realized, too, that his client is a pending unrestricted free agent.” And that BOTH SIDES are in AGREEMENT on that.

The NHL league officials shake their collective heads. “Ya know, guys. We coulda toldya that back in July?”

Seriously, though. It’s great that Kari is facing some rubber again. They said the same thing about Jenna Jameson’s big comeback. Allright, move it right along. How long was Kari actually taking shots? (Jameson joke edited out this time.) When will Kari actually get in some game time?, even if it’s in the AHL with Chicago?

Hey Chris,

Has Coach Anderson talked about the defensive problems? And could we see some Chicago Wolves called up soon?

Rockem: Seems like coach Anderson and I have the conversation daily. He says they are working on the little things. He was encouraged by Monday’s game, even though they lost. I don’t expect a call-up from Chicago any time soon – at least for anything other than an injury issue.

Ya aren’t the rosters locked until after the New Years anyways? I think only time there can be any call ups or send downs is for injury purposes only if I’m not mistaken.

Good to see the big guy back out on the ice! He’s had a tough run of injuries that were not related to conditioning issues like early in his career. I hope he can shake off the cobwebs and go on to a successful NHL career…hopefully here in Atlanta!

Mention of Slater begs the question- Who else would fit on an all “NO HANDS” line? Patrick Stefan would be one good candidate. Others??????

Hell no. Hell No! HELL NO! As dissatisfied as I have been with the recent play of Pavs and Moose they are both are far and away better netminders than that Finnish cancer known as Kari Lehtonen! Want to ensure missing playoffs again? Put this LaLa Land lamebrain in rotation! As I said, will root AGAINST Yardbirds every time this worthless oxygen waste is between the pipes. Cancer has to be eradicated NOT embraced! The oft injured wonder bust is a cancer to the entire team. Like someone mentioned above it was a super way to mar my Christmas holidays. Damn. Just damn! ++STENDEC++

Crazy Avians drive us insane with a loss that should not have been…aaarrrrgh.
Did anyone see where Brian Little got wacked so hard. I thought it was in the face. A neighbor thought it was in the leg…

Nice to see Kari getting closer to his assignment to Chicago for conditioning and then comes the interesting part! :)

Don’t break up Pavelec and Moose!!! Keep them here, and use Kari Leht-many-en-the-goal as trade bait!!!!

The only goalie on the roster that has any value to other teams that could fetch something in return is Pavelec. All I can say is don’t rush Kari back because we are going to lose one good goalie in the process. Like next year would be better.

From what I saw, it was in the leg.

As good as Pavs is, he is not, in my opinion, fully ready for a number one spot yet. He is young and still has plenty to work on. It will be interesting to see Kari in full health, no longer in pain from his back condition. From what I have heard from him, he is feeling better than he ever has as far as pain goes. Kari did have some great stints for us (like the end of last season), and yes, while he has had his health issues, now that he is no longer suffering from his back condition, there is a good chance that he will be better than we have ever seen him before.

In my eyes, it seems that Pavelec plays better on more rest. Perhaps next year we could have Kari and Pavelec manning our goal with Johan as the goaltender coach – no disrespect to Steve Weeks – since this is also a contract year for Johan if I am not mistaken.

Interesting on Kari. Does anyone else also feel like although the current gk situation has worked out very well, it may be on borrowed time? I certainly wouldn’t hand Kari the job when he is ready but the timing of his return may work out.

Kari and Pavs in goal next year. Take that Stendec!

So if Kari comes back to Blue Land do Pavs or Moose become healthy scratches or sent down to Chicago?

I’d like to see some Chicago Wolves in Blueland. If we need a scoring D-Man why not try Kulda? Maybe Colin Stuart should get another try in the bigs (15 goals, 12 assists and +7).

No way anyone should think Pav and Moose are better than Kari WHEN HEALTHY, and I repeat, WHEN HEALTHY. Do not take my word on this either, ask any goaltender (Glovesave29)

I may be in the minority in this but Moose being our go to goalie is ungood, no offense to Moose, he has done a hell of a job but there is a reason why he is a career number two. Without playing Lehtonen to showcase him for a trade there is no value…

Statistics are for losers. Can see why they are always consulted when apologists defend Kari Lehtonen! This Finn is a quitter and crybaby. Come to think of it, he does fit in perfectly on this dysfunctional squad! ++STENDEC++

What is so great about Pavalec? He’s had some great moments…but he has also had just as many bad moments. How is Kari a quitter or a cry baby? I think Stendec needs to get out of his mom’s basement and get some fresh air.

Sorry, its Brett Sterling that has 15 goals and 12 assists. Colin Stuart isn’t in the Thrasher system anymore.
