Thorburn moving up a few lines

Just finished with Thrashers morning skate before tonight’s game against New Jersey.

Ondrej Pavelec will start in goal for the Thrashers after his win Thursday against Dallas. “It ain’t rocket physics,” coach John Anderson said of the decision to start Pavelec.

The scratches tonight will be Bryan Little, Anssi Salmela and the injured Mark Popovic.

With Little out of the lineup, the lines looked like this at practice:

Kovalchuk-Antropov-Thorburn

Kozlov-Peverley-Afinogenov

Kane-White-Armstrong

Slater-Reasoner-Boulton

Afinogenov was awarded the Thrashers player of the month for November by the team’s fan club.

I will check back in later.

Brendan, you’re sniffing glue or drinkin’ what Don Cherry is drinkin’ if you’re gonna blame Bryan Little for that goal in Fla. The guy fell down!! Weird things happen and Little has been hustling more than his captain for over 6 games now. Perhaps he didn’t jibe well with Kovy and Antro the other night, but he can’t carry the burden of winning every puck battle at the wall and corner when Kovy is floating around like a gypsy and Antropov is staying high so he can get back defensively. If you don’t see the problem with our defense right now, then I don’t know what to tell you. Tonite’s hi-lites show that Bogosian has “lost himself” and Hainsey is either hurting Bogosian’s “edge” or is playing worse trying to cover for all the poor decisions that Bogo is making. But that game-losing goal was Hainsey’s and Bogosian’s fault…plain and simple.

But Smoothie, what if Little hadn’t fallen down? Wouldn’t he have still been marking his man? I think the answer is, “yes.” How is Little supposed to do that with his butt cheek on the ice? I don’t know, either. Our D is in trouble, though. At least, lately. And, as you know, our shots against has been high all year. But our goaltending has bailed us out.

Brendan, I spoz you could make that argument, but guarding the side of the crease is normally the assigmnent of a D-man, is it not? You might see a center down that low to clear rebounds but how often do you see a winger down below the circles? Bogo got caught flat-footed after trying to block the shot. In addition, Bogo screened Moose which caused him to give up a juicier rebound than normal since he didn’t see the shot well. Hainsey was basically playing like Hainsey and it cost us.

I don’t know what’s up with Kovy’s floating. And Bogosian pulling the ol’ “flaming” on a Devil’s shot. Things just … plain … aren’t going spectacularly at the very moment. But as I gaze at the standings, we’re not hopelessly, helplessly out of playoff contention. There’s just got to be a meaningful meeting of the minds to correct the inadequacies of our game. I don’t know that Ilya can just “flip on the switch” that will make him excel defensively. Bob Hartley used to tell Ilya, “Kovy, if you learn how to play defense, you’ll be the best winger in the whole NHL.” Maybe Kovy was thinking, “I’m already the best winger in the NHL.” And if that is his thought, it’ll be hard to convince him otherwise, to be more defensively committed.

See Smoothie, that’s the post I agree with. The D has to be situationally aware. As you point out. But, at the same time, any forward engaged in backchecking has to stay on his guy. He can’t let him up. I can already here Howie Meeker’s whiny voice, pleading, “Forwards, you’ve got to FINISH YOUR CHECK.” Ahh, how I miss “Howie Meeker’s Hockey School.”

Another totally heartless embarrassing giveup job by Yardbirds at Loseland. It rarely gets much worse than this! No points in a showdown in which at least one point was critical. Anyone out there who still believes Kapitan Ilya Kovalchuk is not in full Maryann Hossa mode should be strapped in a straightjacket then confined to a room with heavily padded rubber walls. The Russian is through as a Yardbird! That was plain to even a blind person tonight. Who needs Kari Lehtonen when sieve Pavs is available? I look forward to a game at Loseland where NO fans show up to watch these quitters! Fan support has to be earned. These gutless wonders have done nothing to generate any excitement or enthusiasm for fans! Trade IK. Maybe the prima donna will actually try for some other team! It is obvious his captaincy is nothing more than a cruel sham! Coach John Petrino should rip the damn C off chest of uncaring captain then fling it into nearest wastebasket. No captain quality bums on this team! The way I am feeling right now he can go to another team, Russia or to Hell. I am nauseated by his total lack of effort! From the damn team captain! Cannot say much more. Too damn mad and aggravated. Hope heartless Falcons lose by multiple touchdowns in a few hours! Damn them all. ++STENDEC++

Sigh. That should read, “flamingo,” not flaming. As in, Bogosian stood on one leg when facing a “shot blocking” situation. Goalies hate that. All you’re doing … is screening him. Either surrender the shot and the goaltender view of it … to commit to blocking the shot.

A lot of people don’t know this, but Stendec used to be a minor league GM. I tried to see him a few times. But I could never get the door to his office more than a crack open. It was always obstructed by all the puck bags he’d accumulated from the players he traded throughout the years.

Where do I join the Chico Resch Fan Club? Guy was right on! About everyone and everything. ++STENDEC++ See why apologist Brendan does not like him. Damn truth hurts! BTW – JUST read latest post about me. Keep chirping Yardbird apologist as the team which fails to draw fans packs up for relocation to Hamilton. Hopefully your stupid a$$ will be in a Greyhound right behind them! Jerk.

Bren, I hear ya on that. If Little had been on Frolik all along, I spoz he should’ve been the one chasing him to the goal. But I didn’t see the beginning of the play, just the “hi-lite” of the goal. No worries. I think we both know there is something wrong right now. Is it the Kovy contract situation or is the system failing? Or do we not have the right players for the system? We have talent, but hockey is so much more than talent as you know.

We have a ton of talent. What we don’t have is Kovalchuk’s mind in the game.

For the record, Valabik was +1, had an assist, and zero penalty minutes.

I wish I knew what was being said or thought by the players about the defensive effort last night, and the two games before. Pathetic. Poor Pevs, just signed on for 2 more years of that crap? Is Bogo playing D like his Captain now? Those 2 commentators ripped us all night long, even when we were leading. If any team is wanting to trade for Kovy, I hope they don’t watch film of that game.
Where is that shrink that worked with John Smoltz years ago? Dr. Lewelyen? Kovy needs him.
Lets go back to talking trade…Kovy for Wheeler, a D man, because you know Kubina is gone and a # 1. Savard and Kovy back together.
