Here is your early morning report from Thrashers practice. Your last for nearly a week. Team leaves today for New Jersey, Buffalo and Montreal with a stop in Elmira, Ontario for Dan Snyder event. They don’t return to Duluth until next Wednesday.
The early report is that Christoph Schubert is back and on the ice. We assume the “immigration problems” are taken care of. He has been off the ice for a few days so his status for the weekend games remains to be seen.
We had quite a few players on the ice already when I arrived a half hour before the start of practice. Colby Armstrong, Evander Kane, Bryan Little and Marty Reasoner are working on drills with Schubert at one end. Jim Slater and Chris Thorburn on the other end working with two goalies.
Judging by the practice jerseys, the skate will begin with special teams practice (Look, I learned my lesson!).
That’s all I have to offer so far. I will update after practice and interviews.
Thanks.

Based on Ilya’s first 3 games, I’m not sure he needs the practice.

Chris – How’s Antropov? He got tagged with a puck to (or near the) knee pretty hard yesterday right at the end of practice…

No reason to panic. Kovy was just giving the day off for “personal reasons.” He’ll will make the trip. Nik Antropov also did not practice. He took a puck to the knee yesterday. Coach John Anderson said he won’t miss any time. Just a precaution.

Well, here’s to hoping his personal reasons are signing a big fat contract! With two kids and another on the way, I’d bet he’s spending the morning on family stuff. Either way, good for Kovy.

Chris – Since you’re going to be travelling for the games this weekend, will you ask Kovy et. al. about the status and/or new developments in his contract negotiations? ESPN.com stated he was likely to meet with his agent who’s based in NYC on the roadtrip since he’ll be in the area…

Vivlamore — A few blogs back I remember you said you’d ask Anderson about the faceoff situation…do you have anything to share? After listening to that next game I heard Kamal mention Little was taking defensive zone faceoffs for the first line, so I hoped to hear some of the “strategy” from coaches mouth about that.
Good stuff though, keep it up.

Do not worry about schedule. Everybody should play 82 games. Practice is good also it made chemistry between players.

The Real Thrash….I’ve been wondering the same thing. What kind of dang scheduling has only 3 games played in the first two weeks most other teams have played twice as many games?

I think it has to do with Disney on Ice being booked at Philips Arena… still seems like we could have gotten one more road game in there, but 6 games on the road to start the season is a bit much.

Disney on Ice is going to Philly this weekend… the Flyers are about to have 6 days off. So, yes, I’d say other teams are effected.

Burnside gives no indication of how he knows Kovy will meet with Grossman but there it is in black and white anyhow… Whether they meet or not, I’m not confident he’s ready to sign on the dotted line just yet. If they sweep the roadtrip and get the 6, I’ll feel alot better.

From BenThrashers:
Ilya Kovalchuk used his day off yesterday to fly to Buffalo to take care of some standard immigration paperwork.
Take care of that other paperwork please!!

In the kill a rumor before it becomes rampant category: It’s going around Twitter that Kovalchuk and his agent were just in Buffalo. That much is true. As for a trade to the Sabres. Very false. Kovalchuk was in Buffalo to take care of immigration paperwork. That’s why he was not at practice Thursday.

This immigration thing has something to do with crossing over into Canada doesn’t it? I seem to remember that Ilya did something similar in 2005 when he came back from Russia and his work visa had expired.

I don’t go to SI for hockey news very much as I think their coverage is pretty abysmal… however, Darren Elliot has an EXCELLENT article posted today featuring Slava Kozlov discussing the differences between hockeyin the Soviet Union years back and the NHL now.

Geez I’ve just been following my fantasy team this whole time, forgot that Atlanta even had a team. Kovy to Buffalo, that would make people around here miserable for life. Is Slater sitting tonight? Kane gonna play with Peverley and Armstrong? What will the 3rd defense pair look like?

CONGRATULATIONS THRASHERS! It is so sweet to be 3-1. Pavs allowed two goals on hostile ice in New Jersey. Clinching shorthanded tally scored on willpower alone. Thrashers simply were not going to be denied! Glad to see that inner fire. Been missing for last several seasons. Memo to Sori Letemin: Take all the time you need to rest up from whatever phantom injury you claim. End of season preferably. Your services are no longer required! Even the staunchest KL apologists have to admit the Finn sieve would have allowed a minimum of three goals but more likely four or more. Am I not correct? Be honest people! Oh well. Too happy to gripe tonight. Getting set to watch replay! Good night all. Peace. ++STENDEC++

Yet another solid road game. First period was not very good, BUT
we adjusted, something we could never do before. We made NJ play OUR game and it showed.
30 SOG was not bad, but we got only 19.
Antropov/Little/Kozlov still having problems getting it going, but Antro really made a GREAT pass to Peverley and that was that.
I very much enjoyed the annoyed look on the face of Brouder Nice to see.
And yet another FLASH from NHL on The Fly… dave reid and Craig Button, had NICE things to say about Atlanta, what in the world is going on ???? Nice things from dave reid…. AMAZING !!!!
But we deserve it !
Need another solid effort in Buffalo, they are undefeated so far…
