Schubert arrives, won’t play tonight

The morning skate for opening night is over. Here are a few things to know:

1. Christoph Schubert skated with the team, but will watch from the press box tonight. He didn’t arrive until 1 a.m. after being claimed on waivers from Ottawa. He’s big. John Anderson expects him to be ready by Thursday’s game. He will see time on the penalty kill. Forget any notion of playing forward, Anderson says he will be on the back line.

2. Ron Hainsey was not at the skate. According to Anderson he had a “bit of a sore throat.” A decision on his game status won’t be made until later. If he plays, Boris Valabik will be the scratch.

3. The Thrashers helmets will feature the 10-year anniversary logo.

We will check back in later tonight when I return to the arena for the opening puck drop.

Are you ready for some hockey?

Chris,, with a report following the morning skate one of the really important points to cover would be, for us fans that are Fantasy nuts and all fans really, would be the name of the goalie who did not work the morning skate. This is usually a very good indicator of which netminder will be seeing the puck this game. Also what the line combos were is a nice tidbit. Enjoy your report Chris.

Thanks,

I knew they’d find some way to uglify the unis with that 10 year logo. At least it’s just a small logo on the helmets.

LET’S GO THRASHERS!!!!

I’m crossing my fingers in hopes that the 10 year logo has been turned into something that actually looks halfway decent.

Thanks Chris! Hopefully they will not have to much of a drop off for future games. I think we have a very underrated team. I dont know if we are a playoff team, but I certainly think we CAN be! What do you think Chris, are we in the top 7 or 8 of the Eastern Conference? Can we make it up to 2nd in our division?

More size and skating skill never hurts. Pavelec did good tonight. I like Kane’s back-checking more than anything else he’s done. Especially on St. Louis in the third, when the Umpa thought he had a clean odd man rush. The kid is young and can skate full speed a few laps up and down. But stupid penalties and shot against were not good. Andersen needs to address all this.

On NHL network a few minutes ago, there was a report that there are TALKS about moving the Thrashers to Winnipeg. On going talks, and “they”,
the wild eyed announcers said, these are SERIOUS talks and this may be the end of hockey in Atlanta.

Also, one guy said today was THE DEADLINE set by Ilya for a signed contract and that this will be his LAST season in Atlanta.

Chris, where did this Winnipeg stuff come from ? Have YOU heard this ?
Are these “owners” trying to pull a fast one ? OR is this more BS whinning from Canada because they cannot get over the FACT there are NHL teams in the south.

P.S. don cherry looked like they dug him up from the grave tonight,
he has to be either DRUNK or on DRUGS, he makes NO sense what so ever and rambles like a person who needs to be commited, Got commit yourself cherry you bafoon drunk, you are THE SICKEST person on any NHL telecast !

LAC – I’m not buying that relocation story for one second. Forget all the stuff we’ve all talked about regarding arena lease deals and agreements with the NHL. Think about how much $$$$$ AS has put into the team this year. If they are getting ready to cash out, they aren’t bothering to spend one more damn dime than necessary on a roster. Just no chance given their over-riding obsession with the bottom line.

As for a deadline from Kovy – that’s horsecrap as well. Kovy’s final deadline wasn’t October 3rd 2009. Kovy’s final deadline is April 10th 2010. That’s the last game of the regular season … and if it’s the last day of Thrashers hockey this season, Ilya’s probably gone. If it’s not, Ilya’s staying.

LAC, it’s been Waddell’s policy not to negotiate contract during the season. But, clearly, Waddell will continue to do so. He said as much, during the 1st period intermission interview with Darren Eliot. Waddell said the negotiations with Kovy’s representation, Jay Grossman, were going “GREAT.” Waddell used the word “great.” He said they’d meet again over the upcoming weeks. That’s plural. I think once can infer a “month,” as that is several weeks. In Thursday’s print edition, Waddell told Chris Vivlamore that “I don’t think we’ll be talking about this at Christmas.”

Of course, what are the penalties if they are? None, obviously. Waddell can make whatever claims he wants. Free of consequences. Waddell added, “Kovy wanted to see how the team played once assembled.” Well, it has started with a win. We can’t ask for more than that. Let’s just keep it going.

Ilya certainly didn’t play like a guy who was thinking about leaving anytime soon. Man was on fire and his leadership was obvious. Said in 3 star interview that Pevs deserved 1st.

Kane was readily nervous on first couple shifts but after that showed great resolve, hustle and a nose for the net. Almost had a sensational Kovy-esque wrap-around goal in the first period.

Unsung hero was Pavel Kubina who looked right at home in JA’s system. And his reach and quick hands made entry into our zone much tougher. Bogey also played very tough but I thought Tobey was tremendous last nite; NO ONE on Tampa could take the puck away from him and he drew a penalty ragging the puck for 10 seconds in the offensive zone.

The effort was great for 50 mins but the 4 goal lead almost caused their demise with lots of coasting, too fancy passing and ill-advised penalties from not moving their feet.

Is it Opening Night yet?

Great opening night win; that always gets me pumped for the long haul!

Kind of disappointed that there are so few Friday night games this season, but at least they relegated those hideous maroon jerseys to Thursday nights only. What a disaster!!

If the Thrashers were going to move why the hell would they move to Winnepeg where hockey has already failed? They do not have the corporate support to support a major league team and players do not want to play there. Ray Ferraro said it when he used to work for ESPN. It’s too damn cold for too long during the year and players just don’t want to play there. If the Thrashers relocate they will move to Kansas City, Houston, Seattle, or Portland before Winnepeg. If Canada is going to get another team it will be another team in metro Toronto.

The maroon jerseys look better in person. I thought they looked like crap on TV but when I saw them in the stores I thought they were pretty cool.

scottbravesfan, if you are saying a new team would fail because the old one already did, that is a poor argument. By your reasoning, the Atlanta Thrashers should never have existed because the Atlanta Flames failed. Same goes for the Minnesota Wild (North Stars failed), Colorado Avalanche (Rockies Failed), and San Jose Sharks (Golden Seals were in nearby Oakland and failed as well). Portland also had the Rose Buds and they failed also. The Jets failed because they didn’t have a modern arena. They have one now, and although small with just 15,000 seats, it would sell out and get better attendance than half of the teams in the NHL.

I’m not saying Atlanta can’t support hockey, just saying that you shouldn’t write off Winnipeg.
