Something to think/blog about

Folks:

I am off on assignment for a week or so, so wanted to leave you with a new blog.

Got an e-mail from someone that wanted to discuss the possibility of Dany Heatley returning to the Thrashers since he is reportedly not happy in Ottawa, but I see you folks have already been talking about that.

So, let’s throw this out there for discussion: There may not be a rich history here, but as Thrasher fans you certainly must have a favorite moment, favorite goal, favorite hit … Let me know what it is.

When I get back from my assignment, I’ll compile a list of some of the most noted moments. Then we’ll put up a poll to come up with the most memorable moment in Thrashers history.

Thanks for your help with this. It could be fun.

PensFan, Max Talbot scored that critically essential goal, late in Game 5 (Final minute of play), vs. Detroit, that forced overtime in the 2008 Cup Finals. I think Sykora then scored for Pittsburgh to force Game Six. He is a steal at $1.05 million.

There isn’t a person alive who’d be convicted of the attempted murder of Pierre McGuire. All the defense attorney has to do is poll the jury. “How many of you are thinking about killing Pierre McGuire, even as we speak? Now beeeee honest.” All the hands in the jury box would be way high up in the air. And the judge dismisses the case. Just that quick.

I like Doc Emerick. Although, one wonders what his career might be without the use of the word, “drive.”

PensFan, I’m with you on Emrick. Always enjoy the game that much more when he’s calling it.

Brendan, from your earlier post, I say call it as close to the regular season as you can. If a ref sees an obvious infraction and does not call it, then he’s giving an advantage to the player who’s doing the “wrong” thing. I realize they don’t want to exert too much influence on the game, but the no-calls can influence the outcome as well.

Doc has been good for a long time. But I would rather NBC brought Tim Ryan back from the 70’s (NHL Game of the Week) the have Olcyzk and McGuire back. Ted Lindsey was a great color man for NBC in the 70’s.

Dave Strader and Darren Pang are one of the best Play/color combinations in the league, working for the Phoenix Coyotes.

I agree, completely, MB. Non-calls matter as much as the actual calls. Just like actions have consequences, so do “inactions.”

Brendan, Off Topic but I tought that New England loosing their only game of the season in the SB against Giants was quite a upset also. Especially with how the last scoring play Manning was able to pull out! :)

What the Giants did was “formidable,” Tim. I agree. Every now and again, the sports world sends us a jolt, and beckons Chris Berman, of ESPN, to state, “That’s why they play the games.”

Mount Stendec rumbles once again.

GaVaHokie mentioned my favorite, XLB’s first fight.

I think it was his first official NHL game. Not positive though.

Honorable mention goes to Eric Boulton:
Jan. 18th 2008 vs. Buffalo when he dropped both
Pominville and Pratt in less than 10 seconds.

In a previous life DW was a captain of the largest ocean liner that ever sailed. He set forth incredibly short handed (not enough life boats) all the while charming the high class passengers. He directed the ship on a dangerous course. After striking an iceberg, the luxury liner sank in less than an hour. But DW was smiling and trying to reassure that “all is well, no cause for alarm”. He`s been here before. The time was second week of April. The start of the playoffs. His ship never made it. Sound familiar? Hmmm!

@PensFan – What’s wrong with Milbury? I like anyone who’s willing to beat a man with his own shoe.

I love the way Max Talbot plays the game. Like DuPuis, but he can finish.

It would be nice to have a few stars on this team for when it moves to Hamilton or Winnipeg.

Definitely before the first playoff game. I remember being there well before warmups started and people were screaming LETS GO THRASHERS. Thinking about that gives me goosebumps. It’s really a shame that we got swept there and Atlanta only got 2 games of playoff hockey. The energy in Philips during those games was like nothing I’ve ever felt before.

If this team ever leaves this town, I’ll be bitter for the rest of my life that we never had decent owners/management to carry that momentum on. We could have a hell of a fan base now if we actually had a winning team for more than 1 season in 11 years.

Most of the best have been covered so far… but how about two great OT goals by Savard:

@ Colorado, Bob Hartley’s first game back in Denver
@ Toronto, with about 15 seconds left in OT, one of many succesful 3rd period comebacks to start the 03-04 season

These Braves are nothing but heartless quitters! Losers who are an embarrassment to themselves and an affront to the fabulous teams of the past. How they can cash their paychecks is totally beyond me. It is obvious they do not give a damn! Oxygen waste commode residue. Completely worthless!

Bluespark, heh heh, regarding your Talbot and DuPuis comment.

One thing I think the Pens need to do with Dupuis is let him play his game, but order the other players to crash the net whenever DuPuis unleashes one of his long range hard shots. A lot of the time, the following two happen
1) No goal gets scored
1) The goalie gives up a juicy rebound.

Why is it I find it amusing to see stendec trolling the Braves blog?

There’s a reason the Braves aren’t doing well, but it has nothing to do with the heart of the team.

1. Trade the fat goalie…I’d take Heatley back if he promises not to drive himself (or anyone else).

2. If Colorado wants a goalie, trade THEM our fat goalie. Kari and #4 to Colorado for #3 pick and their 2nd round pick?

3. Best moment: 1-0 shutout of Flyers on my son’s birthday. Pasi’s best game ever.

4. Pre-1st playoff game….crowd goes nuts…d-head Avery bounces puck off new Blueland stanchion and into now empty net.

5. Don’t we have any rich guys in Atlanta who could buy out the owners and invest in this team?

6. New just in…Rhodes pulled groin again.

Hell NO! Let him rot in Ottawa. I don’t hate him,but could never forget how he slapped us fans in the face aswell as how he waited in asking for a trade that we could’ve really got full compensation for moving him instead of for Hossa. The latter part is what sticks the most.

It’s obvious he’s all about his self, Kovy is already more of a captain than he’ll ever be as well as a better player. No thanks!

O, and as for some of the best moments- Kovy’s point, our 1st ever playoff game, the hair pulling incident between Kovy and Mike Comrie,Odgers taking on any and all,the 8-3 win in Boston wayyy back during the “hook and hold’em” days

But,IMHO some of the best recent moments I also would like to add to include Kovy kicking McCabes arse this past season,Little’s hat-trick game vs. the Canes, the 52 or 54 save performance by Kari vs. the Caps, the “lob” pass to Reasoner for the OT game winner vs. his old team,in there barn! Man, I was waking up the whole house on those.

Garnett Exelby’s first game when he destroyed Gordy Dwyer with the one punch knock out. That was awesome. Kovy pointing at Crosby and Philips Arena before the first playoff game was awesome as well. Too bad the Thrashers sucked and we got swept.

A couple questions that anyone can answer for me:

First, how long is Heatley’s current contract with Ottawa?

Second, what makes anyone think Heatley would want to play here? He wanted to get away from the whole Snyder ordeal, so he requested a trade in the first place. (Even if Waddell traded players, picks, or prospects for Heatley, I could never see him signing here, primarily because of the death of Snyder. Am I missing something?)

Heatley’s signed through 2013/2014 with a $7.5M cap hit.

ranallo (or any one else, for that matter), do you watch Thrashers games online? If so, do you remember what the cost is per game? I ask because we’re considering doing away with our cable and just watching what we want online, but want to make sure we still have access to the Thrashers (gluttons for punishment?).

If you want high quality access to all the games in the NHL, the NHL GameCenter season package is the way to go. Unfortunately I cannot justify purchasing that package here in Austria since every game starts at 1am local time (can’t do that for enough games to make it worth the cost), so I’m stuck using sites like ustream to find very low quality games.

Go to NHL.com’s website for GameCenter ( http://gamecenter.nhl.com/nhlgc/console.jsp ) and click the top link that says Buy GameCenter Live to see the pricing options. I think they run “early bird specials” sometime in August.

Hmmm, I’d much rather be able to purchase individual games a la carte, though I’m sure that doesn’t fit in with their revenue model. Might be stuck on this one, but thanks for the info, r10.

On another note, Scott Cullen over at TSN did some research on scoring trends for the top 6 picks who played in the CHL and were among the top 50 scorers (or something along those lines) in order to compare how this year’s projected top picks fared.

Follow the article all the way through and he includes a positive mention of E. Kane, who interestingly compares favorably to Stevie Y. More overkill to get you in the mood for the draft.
