Powerhouse singer Jennifer Holliday will return to the Atlanta stage this summer in “Dreamgirls” as part of the Theater of the Stars’ 2013-2014 season.
Holliday, who lives in Atlanta, established herself as a Broadway presence in the early ‘80s playing Effie in the musical, the role for which she won a Tony Award and is still best known. “Dreamgirls” last played Atlanta in 2010, but Holliday’s previous performance in the role was in 2007. She’ll portray Effie only in the Atlanta production and at Wolf Trap in northern Virginia.
“Dreamgirls” heads to the Fox Theatre Aug. 2-11.
Also of musical note in the TOTS season announcement is the 25th anniversary tour of “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story.” The jukebox musical – which can be credited for starting that craze – includes plenty of Holly hits, such as “Peggy Sue” and “That’ll be the Day.”
That show rolls into the Fox July 9-14.
Also on the schedule: “Cats,” July 23-28; “Anything Goes,” Aug. 20-25; “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” Jan. 10-20, 2014; and an add-on for season ticket holders with “Stomp,” Sept. 23-29.
Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 404-252-8960 or visiting www.theaterofthestars.com.

I guess she’ll be holding on to her role as Effie as long as she gets a paycheck. My God, how old is she now? Can she even still sing?

Hi Andrew – she’s 52. She was pretty amazing on the “American Idol” finale last year. Granted, that was one song — a very big song, but still one song – so not sure how she’ll sound for an entire production, but my guess is that her voice is still robust enough to handle it.
Cheers,
Melissa

Andrew & Melissa, I had the opportunity to see her on Stage in November. Yes she still has it and she looks good. She can still hold her own if you ask me…

I saw her on American Idol last year and she looked like she was going to eat the girl that she was singing with. Check out her facial expressions when she sings, I would be scared to sing with her.

G-dub…..Laughed my butt off. This is so true.I have seen her facial expressions during performances. When you see a person do that she is giving it all she’s got.I love Jenny and her voice is still very strong. Can’t wait to catch a plain from Niagara Falls to Hotlanta to see her.She is still the bomb.
