A holiday giveaway: Free Christmas CDs!

[We have our winner! Congrats to Kim Winston, who was randomly selected to win the pack of Christmas CDs. Thanks for sharing your favorite songs, and, as always, thanks for playing and reading. I should have some more fun stuff to give away before the end of the year.

Happy holidays!

Melissa]

Recently, I wrote about some new Christmas albums out this holiday season.

WinnieThePooh_ChristmasToo_new1One of the blessing/curse scenarios of writing about music is that CDs tend to accumulate (yeah, I do the digital thing, but I still prefer to pop an old-fashioned CD in my car or stereo), and as the holidays bulldoze toward us, I’ve found myself with a few extras.

So I’m going to make like Santa Claus and give away a three-pack of Christmas CDs to one reader (the package will contain The Beach Boys’ “Christmas Harmonies,” Lady Antebellum’s “On This Winter’s Night” and Chicago’s double-disc, “Ultimate Christmas Collection”).

All you need to do to potentially win is leave a comment here and tell me your favorite Christmas song/album. We’ll randomly select a winner by 3 p.m. Wednesday and get the CDs in the mail ASAP so you can enjoy them for the holiday weekend.

Good luck!

Always have loved Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” As a child of the 80s, that song really resonated with me and restarted the trend of artists trying to make a difference in the world.

Sleigh Ride has always been my favorite Christmas song (even though it doesn’t actually mention Christmas).

I have always love Silent Night. It is a very beautiful and moving song. My mother loved the Little Drummer Boy. That too is a beautiful song. All Christmas songs are wonderful. Some give us reason to reflect on life in general. Christmas is about giving and thinking about our Lord.

Manhattan Transfer’s album “The Christmas Album”. I really like A Christmas Love Song and Goodnight from this album, but all of the traditional songs are great too.

Years ago, Mannheim Steamroller sped up ad expanded Carol of the Bells. Many artists have followed suit. It’s now my favorite. It used to be The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole, which has now moved to my #2.

Christmas songs I have enjoyed over the years are: Silent Night sung by Mahalia Jackson,
Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire sung by Natalie Cole, The Temptations Christmas Album, and O’ Come All Ye Faithful is one of my favorites to sing with a group of carolers.

On my comment above, I stated Natalie Cole as the singer of Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire, but I actually meant her father, Nat King Cole.

Christmas songs may come and go, but the best ever is Elvis Blue Christmas. If I want to move up to semi modern day, Alabama’s Christmas Memories is my sentimental favorite.

Pogues, “Fairytale of New York,” because nothing says Merry Christmas like singing, “You’re an old slut on junk.”

I vividly remember taking a look at the original “A Very Special Christmas” cassette at Cumberland Mall’s Camelot Music in late October 1987, just because the Keith Haring artwork grabbed my attention. Once I saw the talent involved (U2, Run-DMC, Pretenders, Springsteen), I was sold. That tape was worn out by Christmas 1987. This will always be my favorite Christmas album.

I have a crate full of nothing but Christmas CDs. Like Carol T, I wear different holiday shirts from Thanksgiving until Christmas, but I’m hard pressed to pick just one favorite Christmas song – there are just so many! I LOVE Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Mannheim Steamroller, but the classics are great too!

Jeremy – You had to mention Camelot Music! Man, I spent hours of my teenage years rummaging around Camelot in Fort Lauderdale (and Peaches – not sure if you had them here). The days of dozens of record stores…

Thanks, everyone, for your great comments. Keep ‘em coming. We’re not picking a winner until Wednesday.

Cheers,
Melissa
