Friday Riffs: What’s your favorite sports stadium rocker?

“Da na na na na – hey!” “Rock and rollllllll – hey!”

Yeah, you know it. Some of the most annoying phrases uttered in a rock song. But turn Gary Glitter’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll Part 2” loose on a stadium full of football fans and suddenly, those phrases are a battle cry for victory.

If you attend any sporting event – doesn’t matter if it’s pro, college or high school – chances are you’re familiar with Mr. Glitter’s stadium staple. As well as Queen’s “We Will Rock You/We are the Champions” (the score usually determines which part of the song that you’ll hear, which also goes for Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer”), Guns ‘N Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle,” AC/DC’s “Back in Black” and, even when Chipper Jones isn’t in the house, Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.”

On Saturday, you’ll surely hear the UGA fight song, “Glory Glory,” (though who knows about Lynyrd Skynyd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” which has its set of fans) but also these well-worn classic rock fist-pumpers and maybe a Black Eyed Peas tune to supposedly ramp the adrenaline…or prompt a snack run. Your call.

So what’s your favorite energy-boosting, psyche-building, we’re-gonna-rip-your-head-off-and-win-this-thing stadium song? We’ve provided video of some of the aforementioned familiar tunes in case you need a refresher, but sound off with your picks below. (And for all of your SEC-related needs, head here.)

Gary Glitter, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Part 2”

Queen, “We Will Rock You”

Ozzy Osbourne, “Crazy Train

Guns ‘N Roses, “Welcome to the Jungle”

UGA, “Glory Glory”

None of the above. My favorite is an old staple from the late 80s and 90s- Sirius by Alan Parsons Project. If you dont recognize the name, you would definitely recognize the instrumental; and made a great kickoff song!

None of the above but I am positive that BullDog and Notre Dame fans will understand the lyrics of
Steely Dan’s “Deacon Blues” before much longer.

Got to be “Hells Bells” by AC/DC.

@Buddha – I think that’s the song that they used to play for the Bulls in Chicago, right?

“Renegade” by Styx – played in the 3rd quarter of Steelers homes games – gets the crowd pumped up like nothing else, while big defense hits are played on the jumbo screen! Everyone should experience how electric that atmosphere is.

I used to love Predator games in Orlando. Especially as they blasted “Welcome to the Jungle” almost nonstop to the point that they called the O-rena “The Jungle.”

Which made sense since the movie that the franchise was named after took place in the jungle.

There isn’t a song here that slays me. Seriously? Ted Nugent? Why are almost all these songs crappy classic rock? Because there are barely a couple of marketing departments within sports organizations that have a clue. Fwiw, the Boston Red Sox have this right. They don’t pander to the idiots & play nothing. If you’re at a sporting event & need “Uncle Ted” then you should just go home. Your team probably stinks anyway.

Gary Glitter has served prison time TWICE for crimes against chldren. Any of you who jump up and down and yell, “HEY!” must also think Jerry Sandusky isn’t such a bad guy, he was convicted only once.

Classic rock lives! Name me one song that is top in radio today that you will be hearing in 20-30 years.
This is about the song, not the artist.

I gotta admit, I’m a sucker for Zombie Nation. The Red Sox were one of the first teams to start playing it.
