Madonna flaunts her assets at Philips Arena

Overheard in the ladies room near the end of the Madonna show: “She used to be good. Now she’s just so…weird.”

That one of the most polarizing figures in pop music history is being classified as unconventional is hardly news. Madonna became Madonna not because of her limited vocal ability or creative dance moves – she did it based on an unparalleled ability to provoke, a shrewd business mind and smart songwriting collaborations that helped her create dozens of ageless pop nuggets.

Now she’s 54, keenly aware that she won’t be able to perform a two-hour equivalent of a Broadway spectacle nearly nightly for six months – this “MDNA” tour launched overseas in May and wraps Tuesday after two nights in Miami – or that stripping down to a black bra and underwear, as she did toward the end of Saturday’s Philips Arena show, isn’t going to be met with catcalls and cheers for her impressively taut assets forever.

Those obvious realizations explain the throw-it-all-at-the-wall grandiosity in this show, a tremendous production that, at times, featured drummers suspended over the stage, super-cool see-sawing lighted cubes, 15 dancers in various forms of gaudy costumes and bare-chested muscles (the men, that is) and a gleefully nutso fashion show during “Vogue.” Ringmaster Madonna barely had time to sip from her bottle of water, and, while she can be criticized for many things – such as the rampant Auto-Tune and questionable singing during high-octane dance numbers – she always exhausts herself onstage for the benefit of a top-notch show.

The extravaganza was divided into four sections/themes that initially contained a stupid amount of violence. “Revolver” and “Gang Bang” featured her brandishing an assault weapon, waves of blood cascading across the seemingly mile-high video screens behind her every time she knocked off a bad guy like a black-clad Bond villainess.

In fact, much of the first quarter of the show was like watching a Cirque du Soleil production. You stood there with your brows furrowed in puzzlement, but didn’t want to look away for fear of missing that one meaningful second. Then again, judging by the number of people nearby who spent most of the show texting and flipping through photos on their phones, maybe this time Madonna veered so far off course, not even she could temper our technological ADD tendencies.

But if there is a legitimate gripe about this tour, it isn’t that she played songs from “MDNA” – it’s her latest album, what did you expect? –- but that only a handful of those songs are good enough to warrant the spotlight.

The stripped, lovely “Masterpiece,” performed with Basque trio Kalakan, was a highlight of the tour de pomp (which began at 10:30 p.m. – a fact mentioned frequently since the tour began), and her snarky playground chant, “I Don’t Give A,” which featured Nicki Minaj on video, might have been a hit in another era of music.

But many others – “I’m Addicted,” “Girl Gone Wild” – are forgettable efforts while “Gang Bang” is merely an annoying refrain over a throbbing beat and screaming guitars.

Of course there will be fans from Saturday’s sold-out event who will grouse that Madonna didn’t perform enough of her “hits,” and they wouldn’t be wrong. But for the past decade, no Madonna tour has included more than a handful of ‘80s radio fare, and most of those songs were recast into unrecognizability.

At least on Saturday, fans received a mostly faithful “Papa Don’t Preach,” a rousing “Vogue” and a traditional roots version of “Open Your Heart” (again with Kalakan). The one true misstep was turning “Like a Virgin” into a supposedly sultry torch song, which Madonna performed in the aforementioned bra and panties, first flat on her stomach at the edge of the catwalk and then atop a piano, “Fabulous Baker Boys”-style. Of course it would sound ridiculous if she sang the song in its original incarnation, but turning it into sludge wasn’t the way to go.

For those yearning for vintage Madonna, she made an appearance early in the show, when, clad in her drum majorette outfit and offering some pom-pom routines not likely to be seen on the sidelines of any Friday night high school football game, she dove into “Express Yourself.” In the middle of the song, Madonna snuck in the chorus of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” proving how it swipes the same melody line, then twisted the knife in that perfectly Madonna way by adding the chorus of her own “She’s Not Me.”

Point taken. And the point is, even when Madonna is creating and performing a show that is more in her own self-interest than placating fans who still wear lace gloves and bows to her concerts, it’s a necessary evolution.

We might not always agree with her direction, but, as Minaj reminds at the end of “I Don’t Give A”: “There’s only one queen – and that’s Madonna.”

There is only one Madonna… and I appreciated every aspect of the show and her latest invention of herself. She is the marketing queen – that is for sure… However Melissa you are straight on in your review … ‘Stupid” was a spot on description of the violence depicted… Why? I am a fan of her music and I am still confused about why she needs to highlight that part of our world when there are so many other topics… …

Every time I read a review of a show that I go to on this page all I see is NEGATIVITY!! I was at this show on the 7th row and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! We paid $360 for our seats and I would pay for it ALL OVER AGAIN!! GREAT SHOW!! These article authors annoy me and it’s always funny to me how many mispelled words, and the incorrect punctuation that is used from several authors on this site. (how does it feel to have your work picked apart?)

I was slightly embarrassed for her. She sounded HORRIBLE. The spectacle was fun to watch, but she’s so desperate for attention. And her beyond bitch attitude was quite a buzz kill. I won’t be paying to see her again any time soon…..

I am a music fan. I loved Madonna’s early work, she lost me after “Like A Prayer”. I am not a fan of her stuff after that like VOGUE. But, I had the opportunity to see this concert. I did not know many of the songs she performed but I loved the show. She put on a great show. When she performed “Like A Prayer”, it was a great moment for me to witness one of the most influential songs being performed by one of the most influential artist ever. If any Old Schoolers can remember the controversy that surrounded that video when it was first released. Leon played the Black Jesus character. The entire Video was huge in breaking many racial barriers. Madonna has always pushed the envelope in breaking barriers. That is why I will always be a fan of hers.

Madonna, I loved you. Now I tolerate you. I wish you would have stopped while you were ahead or realized you are worth more than petty fights and provocation for the sake of provocation. Better luck next tour…

I was at the concert and although I was still starstruck, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I did her other concerts. It wasn’t great. It’s actually one of her worst. We know that you are the “queen”, no need to remind us. We also didn’t need to see her in underwear. Come on, I expect a little more maturity or more class. But whatever.
The show wasn’t sold out. There were A LOT of empty seats.
I still love her but I expect more from her and she didn’t bring it. She seemed insecure in the show. Put your shirt back on Madonna and stop comparing yourself to other singers. It’s childish. Putting Gaga’s song in there was immature and stupid. All the more ironic was that promotion for Gaga’s concert kept showing up on the screens before and after Madonna performed.
My advice: Leave Gaga alone and stop telling us you’re a “queen”. Just stick to the music and avoid the unnecessary drama.

Last night we had club seats at the Phillips Arena hoping to enjoy a musical presentation by
Madonna. . .  Can’t begin to say what a disappointment.  First off, she doesn’t strut out til 10:30 pm, a DJ, yes DJ, plays before.  We were aware of that and didn’t arrive til after 9.  To begin with, there’s a really big overkill on her entrance . . drama . . .drama, dark drama, she comes out with an assault rifle. . .yes, that’s what I said.  Bang bang, your dead, all backup have guns too, pointing at audience, BANG BANG. . . and that was the beginning of a horrible show.  ”I killed my lover and I have no regrets”, so violent, unbelieveable.  ( after shootings in Aurora CO, Columbine, etc. wouldn’t you think that theme would definitely be taboo?) not to mention the huge video screens blood splattered . . . So gross.

Transvestites, foul language out of her mouth including F U.  Thing is, not just my opinion but in the morning reviews, woman really can’t sing that well. . .her claim to fame is shock value.  She is really high on herself.

Sad to say beautiful little six yr old in front of me, before it began, so excited to be at the concert and she was burying her head and holding her ears most of the time.  Madonna needs to have that arse she thinks so much of kicked mightily..  Yes, she doesn’t even have a great figure, but thinks we should be thrilled to see her butt.  She actually said so, using rather raw terminology.  Bad girl.  She may have been great years ago, and now. . . is she trying to compensate for the aging process with her gross behavior?

We weren’t alone in our disgust, many walking out said same.  Oh and she didn’t sing any of the popular tunes.  Drama ~ drama ~ violence, sexual innuendoes.  big overkill on production to camoflouge her lack. Do you get we were ticked

I live in Dallas, TX and went to her concert when she came through here (October 21). I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!! She is wonderful live in concert!!! People here talking negatively about Madonna are just jealous or ignorant. So she comes on late during this tour. Big deal!! Be glad you are geting the best show for your money. There are singers & bands that refuse to perform b/c the promoter didn’t have all of their money. There were singers that were too f***** up with drugs and alcohol to perform. Let’s not forget artists that get pissy and leave, walking out on their show (remember Axl Rose ). That will never happen at a Madonna concert. Quit your bitching!!!!

Biggest madonna fan ever

That was the worst review I’ve ever read. Talk about lack of imagination! Madonna is the ultimate entertainer. There is no one that puts on a better show in any genre. She has energy, attitude, imagination, great music, incredible dancers, auditory/visual overload, she takes you on a journey that is unforgettable. I guess thats only if you can pull your head out of your a@@ and let your imagination take you away. There is only one queen and that’s Madonna.
