Jason Aldean sells out UGA stadium

So what if Jason Aldean went home trophy-less at the CMA Awards last night?

He’s got two more stadium sellouts to boast about today.

Aldean’s April 13 show at University of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium in Athens sold out within 45 minutes (about 15 minutes into the onsale, more than 40,000 tickets had moved) and tix to his second night at Fenway Park in Boston on July 12 were gone in less than an hour.

“I got to open the CMA Awards last night with two of my really good friends, and then I got to wake up this morning with more sold out stadiums…are you kidding me right now?” Aldean said in a statement. “The list of guys in country music who sell out stadiums is pretty short, it’s guys like Chesney and Garth…I’m not supposed to be on that list. It’s a big testament to the hard work my band and crew put in every night out there and to the loyalty and passion of country music fans. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Aldean’s fifth studio album, “Night Train,” also sold a whopping 409,000 copies its first week in release, one of the biggest openings of the year until Taylor Swift’s “Red” came along last week.

Thank you for your article, Melissa. The correct name for UGA’s stadium is “Sanford”.

pop isn't country

He’s not country. He’s pop with a little bit of country mixed in.

Most of the crap that passes for country music these days is more pop than country. Made for the mainstream.

And as a UGA alumnus, I couldn’t be more disappointed that this will be the first concert ever in Sanford Stadium.

I can walk around Athens any time day or night without fear of being attacked by misdirected youth. Can’t do that in Chicago with armor support.

Popisntcountry, QUIT being a MUSIC snob. You don’t like it, turn it off. Last time I checked, this is a free country. One reason I moved from Atlanta. NOTHING but snobs, everywhere, of all stripes. Get over yourself already.

P.S.-I live in Nashville now…the HOME of country music. GA is making a HUGE contribution to this genre, NO THANKS to people like you!

I am SO SORRY your beloved stadium is going to be defiled by this “fake” music…apparently 90,000 people DISAGREE WITH YOU. How does THAT feel?

It is going to be a great night of music in the city of Athens Georgia, and there wil be more bad ass red necks like me, an good lookin country women there. Not to mention 100,000 four wheel drive pick up trucks park in and around Clark county Georgia. Jason Aldean wil be at the top of his game that night……Go Dogs…..Sic um……Woof Woof Woof…

Being originally from GA myself am very proud of all the Georgians who have made it into country music in the past 5 yrs. or so, but will never, ever understand how Jason Aldean did it. He is the one that I wouldn’t walk across the street to hear even if paid to do it. He is basically a “one trick pony” and will not last much longer. He is dang lucky to have lasted this long. All his songs sound the same, and his voice is “nerve-wracking”. Personality-wise he is a 1 or 2 at best. His success is an anomaly and he must have big money from a relative or friend in the business backing him. Look for him to disappear gradually in the next 3 yrs., like a few others have done.

UGA 86

I was a student at UGA from 82-86, and recall that Springsteen inquired about playing SANFORD during the epic Born In The USA tour. If memory serves, the Athletic Association denied the request because they were concerned about potential damage to the Hedges and turf. (I guess that wasn’t such a big deal when they ripped both out for Olympic soccer a little over 10 years later). The details have faded as the years have passed, but I also recall the AA leased SANFORD from the University (or state) at the time for $1 a year. I was mortified when I heard that detail. That the AA who basically had free use of SANFORD, would deny what at the time was the biggest rock tour in years and rob students and fans of an incredible experience (and untold revenue for the AA and local merchants), was…and still is…beyond comprehension.

After the Aldean show was announced, I mentioned this to a few of my fellow long-in-the-tooth college buddies who were in Athens at the time, and none of them remember a potential Springsteen show in SANFORD. Does anyone else on this forum? Or have I just been senile for over 25 years?

Beautiful. I thought Dawgs had more intelligence. Jason Aldean tries his best to sound like a hick or a hillbilly when he performs his sophomoric drivel, with sexual innuendos more fitting for fourteen-year-old boys…trucks, mama, all the usual pseudo-country crap. He’s just useless. Why couldn’t they have gotten someone of substance?

Of course, these are the same people who like Jason Aldean (the Nickelback of country music).

All these manufactured in Nashville “country singers” have the same cookie-cutter songs that reference the woods, the farm, fishing, trucks, Hank Sr and or Jr.; Skynyrd, sweet tea, drinking, and some country girl shaking “her thing”.

I think I might have a career as a country music songwriter.

Why does every male country singer have to wear a cowboy hat? Is it because Patsy Cline wore a cowboy hat and it’s a tribute to her? In that case, it’s kind of gay, isn’t it?

I think “MyPatootie” hit the nail on the head above. This guy has a big money relative or friend backing him and it’s obvious that relative/friend has a very strong UGA presence. How else would he be allowed to be the first concert ever at Sanford?

It’s a shame but I guess there’s nothing we can do about it (other than continue to make our voices heard).

Modern pop-country is where old rockers go to revive their careers. There’s a reason why these singers draw the number of people that they do. People listen to country music because rock became rap & hip-hop,therefore leaving many predominately white listeners out in the cold. That’s where pop-country fills the gap. Personally,I prefer more instrumental-type of country such as ZBB & Alan Jackson-style music. There’s so many different types of country music so you can look around and fond SOMETHING that you like.As far as the main topic being Jason Aldean at Sanford goes, more power to him!

My Gosh….my gut tells me all the haters with these comments about Jason Aldean, who has worked his ass off to get to where he is now, are bunch of dam Yankees. Let me tell you something straight up…. Native Southerners, like the ones that were born and raised in or around Athens, do not give 2 Hoots in Hell what you think about our Georgia boy, Jason Aldean. I first saw Jason Aldean in Greenville SC at the Blind Horse Saloon, about 7 years ago. He just getting started, and played the whole set acoustically. His band are great muscians all. I got my tickets for the concert in Athens next year…..cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To all the Jason haters, thats why there are other radio stations, you don’t have to listen if you don’t want to. Didn’t know Jason im Macon, but he has worked up from playing in country nightclubs before he was a teenager. His music may not be old traditional country, but it is more country than some. What about his being the first country artist to sell out Fenway Park in Boston? That’s quite an accomplishment for any artist. Much rather hear the “new” country than be at a store or getting gas and be forced to hear all the @*$X*% language from the rap music being blasted from the next car.

A. U2 was slated to be the first show in that stadium (with REM). B. Who defines what country music is? Having a fiddle or steel guitar in the band? C. The whole genre and industry is a $%$ing mess. Unless you are an artist like Zac Brown who built a career without leaning on an industry where 98.5 % of its staff are CLUELESS, then your career is in the hands of scenesters right from the frat house.
D. The most hip spot for country and bluegrass in Georgia is being built in Newnan and opening in April.

I can’t think of a more perfect venue. First of all, Jason Aldean loves Athens. Sanford Stadium has been voted one of the top five most beautiful stadiums in America and Athens, GA has been voted THE No. 1 College town in America. Great choice Jason!
