Friday Riffs: What’s the best revenge song?

Miranda Lambert comes to town tonight for a show at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood, and if there’s one thing we know about the sassy country songbird, it’s that she doesn’t take any guff.

So, in honor of her frank assessments about love, let’s talk revenge. It would be hard to sway me from my belief that Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” remains the gold standard of middle finger songs, although Carrie Underwood bashing the headlights of a deceitful fool’s car in “Before He Cheats” comes close. (Both ladies, by the way, are also coming to town – Morissette to The Tabernacle Oct. 25 and Underwood to Gwinnett Arena Dec. 19.)

In the essence of gender fairness, let’s give the guys in All-American Rejects credit for their deliciously spiteful “Gives You Hell,” and of course, we can’t discuss kiss-off songs without mentioning one of the original residents of See-Ya-ville , Nancy Sinatra and “These Boots are Made for Walking” (I spared you the Jessica Simpson version).

Some of my other picks are below. What are yours?

Miranda Lambert, “Gunpowder and Lead”

Carrie Underwood, “Blown Away”

Alanis Morissette, “You Oughta Know”

All-American Rejects, “Gives You Hell”

Nancy Sinatra, “These Boots Are Made for Walking”

Beyonce, “Irreplaceable”

I’d go with Jaszmine Sullivan’s “Bust your windows” or her equally informative, “10 Seconds”.

Does anybody remember Liz Phair? She was the best ultimate male basher lyricist ever! She did not need to write revenge songs. Males needed to write revenge songs to soften her blows. Her first album “Exile in Guyville” is the Holy Grail of the early 90’s era for female artists.

This is coming from a guy who loves punk & metal – RockerMan “I agree, Slayer rocks”

I think Taylor Swift is the most annoying revenge song artist. She grippes about all her boyfriends in her music. It is very lame.

Not quite the typical revenge type song, but how about “That Don’t Impress Me Much” by Shania Twain, or “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” by the Spin Doctors? Both have the quality of wanting to tell someone to stuff it that you want in a revenge song!

I’ve totally heard of Liz Phair and love her for when you need angry songs. I also think early Melissa Etheridge is good for revenge/break up songs. And a slower version – Sinead O’Connor’s “Last Day of our Acquaintance.”

Kanye West – Heartless, and Smile, Lily Allen. Taylor Swift’s Never Ever Getting Back Together cuts right to the chase, too. –Good list, I’ll have a new playlist for those rough relationship days. :) My vote for ultimate rip-you-a-new-one, though is for a spanish classic that only a niche group of people out there will know.. Pimpinela, Pega la Vuelta. The name of the song, translated, is “Take a Hike.” ’nuff said! lol.

Enter your comments here@SidViscious,

Sure man, not only have I heard of her, I’ve seen her & have at least 3 of her recordings, including “Exile” a fine alt grrrl power answer to the Stones “EOMS.” And you are spot on with your assessment. Obviously, considering the entries here, this is not the crowd for Liz Phair. Kellie Pickler & Beyonce are the dead giveaway foreshadowing to that reality. Speaking of Pickler, here’s how you can define her: with the first money she made, she went out and got breast augmentation surgery. Way to go, girl. You’ll never take the trailer park trash out of her.

Nobody can out-revenge Miranda Lambert. She can twist lyrics and spin a tale that should have the bad guys ducking for cover. Try these lines and you know not to mess with this woman:
I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man
I’m going to show him what a little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead

October 6th, 2012
7:25 pm

I’d have to go with Alanis Morissette. “You Oughta Know” blew everyone’s mind in the 90’s and for the first time in history women of all ages felt it was ok to express these emotions and not hide them.

October 6th, 2012
10:10 pm

“Before He Cheats” is a really stupid song if you figure that she’s going to end up in jail because she left evidence by carving “my name into his leather seats.”

Love the song “Goodbye, Earl” but the Dixie Chicks do seem to hate men most days.

I guess country songs about restraining orders and marriage counseling are not as intense as killing the ex-partner but that’s a bit harsh.
