Friday Riffs: Getting in a Dragon-Con state of mind

Today kicks off Dragon-Con weekend in Atlanta, so you know what that means – Costumes! Wacky masks! Arguments over whether or not Jar Jar Binks was a viable character!

It’s all beyond awesome and I can’t wait to get downtown today to hang with my fellow freaks and geeks.

So in honor of Dragon-Con, I’ve scoped out a few videos to get you in a super-galactic frame of mind.

Feel free to add your own selections on the message board. Remember, folks…the truth is out there.

(P.S. Check out www.dragoncon.org for a full lineup of events and info about weekend and day passes.)

Who knew there was a 14-minute version of Meco’s disco-fied “Star Wars” theme? This one includes a portion of Luke’s pensive-on-Tatooine music and, of course, the groovy cantina boogie. Today at 1 p.m. at Dragon-Con is a Jedi Lightsaber Battle and then Darth Vader himself, David Prowse, will be speaking at 2:30 p.m. I’m so there. (Prowse returns at 1 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday.)

You can find techno-fied versions from the Dust Brothers (from the soundtrack of the first “X-Files” film) and random trance versions. But I want to believe I’m a purist, so for me it’s nothing but the original Mark Snow version of the theme from “The X-Files,” with its echo-y synths and creepy whistling. See my hero Gillian Anderson at the Con at 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Oh, and here’s your random, useless fact of the day: The song is supposedly the 754th best-selling single of all time in France. But who’s keeping count?

Alice Cooper returns to Dragon-Con this year for two panel appearances, today at 4 to talk about the “Billion Dollar Babies” tour and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Here’s some classic video of Cooper performing “Billion Dollar Babies.” And I admit, I’m a little annoyed that a man can carry off those leopard boots better than I ever could.

Adam West and Burt Ward are also in town to talk Batman (11:30 a.m. today and Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday). While their fame is attached to the TV series, I’m partial to the music from the first “Batman” movie, particularly the funky soundtrack work from Prince. For you purists, here’s the campy original TV show opening with all of its “pows” and “thwacks,” and then a look back at Prince’s super-fly “Batdance.”

I realize this is blasphemous in some circles, but I’ve never been much of a “Star Trek” fan – my loyalties have always remained firmly in Camp Star Wars. But since there are a ton of Trekkies in town this weekend, we will not ignore your needs. Here’s a cool collection of the opening sequences of all of the “Star Trek” series combined in one YouTube video by one person with a lot of time to spare.

“Star Trek” will be represented at Dragon-Con by Jonathan Frakes (5:30 p.m. today and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. Sunday); LeVar Burton (5:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday); Michael Dorn (5:30 p.m. Saturday, 11:30 a.m. Sunday and 11:30 a.m. Monday); Tim Russ (11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday) and others.

Melissa,

There are two local bands scheduled to perform, Fader Vixen and Die Sektor. Born and bred right here, raised on AJC funny pages. I’m sure they’d love it if the local music reporter covered them. I know I’d enjoy reading about people who spring from common soil.

There is also a local producer/filmaker who will be featured: Brian Love. He grew up in Dunwoody and graduated from The Galloway School. He is now a MFA student at Columbia U.

Curious – Sadly, I will be wearing the costume of a journalist on assignment…jeans and Converse! One year, though, I’ll take the plunge :)

Nobody – Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll check to see when they’re playing. I’m out of town this weekend, so I can only attend today/tonight.

Cheers,
Melissa

Here is a Lord of the Rings Rap from local band The Wonder-Nerds (out of Decatur) that would fit in well at some Dragon*Con parties:

The only one qualified to SPEAK as Darth Vader is James Earl Jones. Not some limey bodybuilder who wore the suit SOME of the time.

James Earl Jones cant talk about swinging a light saber cause he never did it. Duhh. Id rather hear James Earl Jones talk about “BASEBALL” much more compelling.

Prowse never swung “a light saber,” either. First, because there is no such thing. Second, because it was a stunt man who did anything remotely athletic. But, all of you dweebs suck up to a crippled limey like he’s a Sith god.

I will be dressing up as myself this year, everyone knows I’m the biggest freak of them all year-round. I stay in the little 5 points where it is a 24/7 dragoncon extravaganza ;-)
