No one will ever question the eclectic ambitions of The Wood Brothers. Which is why their decision to take on Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T.” on a recent installment of the “A.V. Club Undercover” isn’t surprising – it’s just a really cool version of the song.
Check out Chris Wood (also of Medeski, Martin & Wood) on bass, Oliver Wood on guitar and percussionist Jano Rix on a specially-named guitar.
Oliver Wood has plenty of Atlanta ties, though he recently moved to Nashville, and the band will release “Live Volume 2: Nail and Tooth” Aug. 28 on Zac Brown’s Southern Ground label.
The guys also performed on Jimmy Kimmel’s show last night.

The Wood brothers had the right attitude going in: step “outside the box”–both the self-created and the one others expect… Michael Jackson did that too, so nice channeling of his spirit there.

I loved the Wood brother’s cover of Michael Jackson’s P.Y.T. The fact that they chose this song because it was more challenging than the others makes it even more fantastic. Great job Wood brothers!

Michael would have absolutely loved it! I can see him smiling, nodding his head to the beat, and clapping!

Thanks, Guys! I dig your cover of this song. It’s got a good grovoe and I especially like the way you mimicked the heavy breathin’ that was one of Michael’s trademarks. Anyone who thinks that MJ’s music will lose it’s relevance and popularity, they need to listen to this and countless other covers and even instrumental versions of his songs. Did you know that Michael was working on an album of classical music? He loved such great composers such as DeBussy, Prokofiev, and many others. He was a consummate student of the arts and one of the most talented, caring human beings to ever grace our Planet Earth.

They say that copying someone is the greatest compliment. I am always happy to read of other artists playing or singing Michael’s compositions to keep his music alive into the future. Well done and good luck.

Nice cover, guys. I love it when artists interpret Michael Jackson’s music in their own way. Love the blues feel and the harmony. It was very enjoyable and pays proper respect to Michael’s special accents.

What a cool version of P.Y.T.! Loved the laidback bluesy feel you gave to the song. Super effort and well done to the Woods Brothers for stepping outside the box and taking on a MJ classic. Not easy to do well but you pulled it off.

Jackson songs are notoriously difficult to sing and put your own stamp on, but the Woods Brothers do a P.G.J. – a pretty good job! Congratulations guys!

Great version of one of Michael’s best songs, in my opinion. There’s a reason not too many of today’s “singers” even try Michael’s songs, i.e., can’t touch perfection; however I enjoyed this creative effort immensely. Way to go!
