Back in the late-‘80s, Athens was one of those dots on the map signifying an Unlikely Musical Hub.
But with the success of R.E.M. and The B-52s and other buzzy acts such as Pylon and Flat Duo Jets, the college town was an undeniable focal point.
In 1987, the documentary “Athens, GA – Inside/Out” was released, giving a look into the creatively flush city that birthed these acts.
Those who missed the movie the first time around can check it out Oct. 9 when it’s reissued on DVD with an accompanying soundtrack that contains five bonus tracks (one is Love Tractor’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Shattered” with Peter Buck on guitar).
The DVD also includes a commentary track and a 2003 interview with Katie Pierson and Cindy Wilson of The B-52s.
Some remastered tracks on the CD:
The Squalls, “Na Na Na Na”; R.E.M., “(All I’ve got to Do is) Dream”; Time Toy, “Window Sill”; Dreams So Real, “Golden”; Flat Duo Jets, “Jet Tone Boogie.”

Great film. Found, what I am guessing was a bootleg DVD, a few years ago at Wuxtry in Athens. Favorite was from the lead singer of the BBQ Killers when he says: “Let’s just say we’re not…….Zepplin”.

There were two nights of concerts with the featured bands at the Uptown Lounge in Athens when the film was released. Anybody remember that?

Well, they jacked this list up. What about Mercyland? They rocked in Athens during the 80;s. Around same time as REM.

I bought the same bootleg that Chip mentioned at Wuxtry about 5 years ago.It has commentary from the directors that is really interesting and also a bonus interview with Dave Schools of Widespread Panic. I remember going to Walter’s BBQ in summer of 90 and talking to Walter about the film; in quote; “Yah, that was one of the better films I did”(he did no other films); and Walter had jacked up the price and the bbq was kind of average. This is a good film but there are some inaccuracies; Howard Finster lived in Summerville, GA; no where near Athens; The Flat Duo Jets were from N.C. I caught a few bands in my first year in Athens – Pylon, Kilkenny Cats(not very impressive), The Yams(they had bassist from The Squalls); Love Tractor. Those were great times in Athens; seems like Hope Scholarship kind of changed the vibe but still a great city.

Black Cop! I was just talking about them last weekend. Short-lived but great. They tore up Sonstock that one year.

I hear there is a similar documentary currently still in production. It is more about Georgia music, of all kinds. Working title, “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow: The Georgia Music Legacy.
Shot and directed by Atlanta filmmaker, David S. Barron. The filmmaker now resides in Hollywood, and has been catching up with artists since 1989. go to http://www.amfilmshd.com for more info.

The “bootleg” DVD that has been referred to is not likely a bootleg. The film was officially released on DVD in 2003 in a standard DVD case by another company with interviews with Cindy Wilson, Dave Schools, Jack White of the White Stripes, and more.
Although technically out of print, it’s still available – we carry it and I’m sure a number of stores still do as well. However, the soundtrack has never been released on CD before, only on cassette and vinyl, so this bundle is a nice release.
