[I'm on vacation through Wednesday, Aug. 8. If you have breaking music news, please contact Rodney Ho (rho@ajc.com) or Jennifer Brett (jbrett@ajc.com) in my absence. Thanks!]
Today we’re talking teen idols because this weekend, teen sensations Mindless Behavior will take over the Fox with shows on Saturday and Sunday. Last summer, the guys sold out a Fox date on what our reviewer noted was appropriately called the “Scream” tour.
If you’re not familiar with the guys, who were very sweet and polite when I talked to them last year and recently won the BET Viewer’s Choice Award, take a look at their video for “My Girl.”
Fellow teen heartthrob Jacob Latimore opens.
For those of us not overly interested in today’s crop of 15-year-olds, these were my guys during my teen years – and, actually, still are – but a big difference between them and a lot of other teen idols of their day is that all three write their own songs, play their own instruments, produce their own work, etc. Dance moves, though? Not so much.
Think back, if you will…who made your heart flutter (and guys, you, too, can answer) back in the day?
Rick Springfield, “Human Touch”: Who knew that 30 years ago, Mr. Springfield would be so prescient about the world we would live in? And don’t you just love these alien costumes?
Duran Duran, “New Moon on Monday”: Oh, Simon, no matter how many years go by, “Shake up the picture, the lizard mixture” still only makes sense to you. I could do a whole post of Duran Duran videos alone, but for today, I’ll share my favorite.
Bon Jovi, “Livin’ on a Prayer”: I have a friend who loves to mock what he calls the “needless” key change in the song. He continues to be wrong. It is awesome, as is JBJ’s hair in this clip.

YES! Loved Rick Springfield then, still love him now! He’s still touring about 100 shows a year and still draws in the crowds! A true showman, that’s for sure!

Davy Jones. No question. Got the chance to meet him last time the Monkees were at Chastain, and he was a class act. Extremely nice man.

You have to give Taylor Swift credit. She’s done pretty well and is awfully easy on eye. Additionally, Swift carries herself like a lady unlike Miley Cyrus.

What about the girls?
As a man, I had the hots for Stevie Nicks.
Yeah, those kissers at the Chick-Fil-A’s looked like a bunch of idiots out there. What a waste of media.

Not 100% true. The actual teen idol is Autotune. The posers in the videos dancing and “singing” are just lip syncing.
Thanks for the clarification.
