What are your favorite songs about London?

clash-london-callingThe opening ceremonies for the London Olympics are happening today, and that got us thinking about songs that reference the “Big Black Smoke” (as the Kinks once called it).

London is the birthplace of so many great bands, singers and musicians– the Who, the Rolling Stones and Adele, for starters — that it should come as no surprise that there are tons of songs about the city. But a quick online search turns up a massive Wikipedia list that seems to go on forever.  It’s so large that they had to put the list of songs beginning with “L” on a separate page.

The classic 1979 album you see above has several great songs about the city, including “Guns of Brixton” and the title track. The Clash — along with bands such as Saint Etienne, the Jam, Small Faces, Blur and the Kinks — tend to pop up on that list again and again. There’s a real sense of place in the music of those bands, and that place is usually London.

If you need some inspiration, try one of the all time great London songs,  the Kinks “Waterloo Sunset.” Tell us about your favorite London song.

“Riding on the Metro” by Berlin (sort of about London)

Actually I think that Riding on the Metro is about the Metropolitan, the Paris subway.

London Calling hands down the best song about London. With all of the overdone coverage that we will have to face over the next couple of weeks, the only thing that will get me through it will be the regular playing of that wonderful Clash song. And its an anti-nuclear song to boot which only adds to its appeal.

Your question made me quite nostalgic. Here’s a few to consider (in alphabetical order):

A Day in the Life by the Beatles ( a great big tour of London)
Baker Street by Gerry Raferty
Carnaby Street by the Jam
The Dead Girls of London by Frank Zappa
Electric Avenue by Eddie Grant
First Night Back in London by the Clash
Guns of Brixton by the Clash
Hey Young London by Bananarama
Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits
Towers of London by XTC
We are London by Madness
Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon
West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys

And of course, you can’t cover England without “God Save the Queen” and Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols.
