Jennifer Lopez tells Ryan Seacrest she is leaving “American Idol”

Jennifer Lopez confirmed on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show that she, too, is leaving “American Idol.”

The singer-actress-dancer-expert-clothing-wearer reluctantly told the “Idol” host during a 15-minute interview that “something has to give.”

“I honestly feel the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I put on hold because I love ‘Idol’ so much,” she said. “I feel we had an amazing run.”

When Seacrest asked if the door was open for her to return, she said, “No matter what you guys need over there, I’m always going to be here.”

Lopez originally signed to do one year on the singing talent show, but wound up doing two because she “fell in love” with the show and the “Idol” “family.”

Yesterday, Steven Tyler announced his departure. That leaves Randy Jackson – an original panelist – as the only one standing. Rumors are circulating that Mariah Carey is in talks to join the judging team…but who knows who will be on that team.

For all other things “Idol,” make sure to visit my colleague Rodney Ho’s blog.

I agree with Ellen. ‘Idol’ has jumped the shark. The first big mistake they made was adding Kira Dioguardi (I’m sure I messed up the spelling of her name, but you know who I’m talking about) to the judge panel. It has been downhill since then. I’m glad that Tyler is gone. He didn’t add any comments of value to the panel. This past season was the worst. All of the standing ovations, ugh!

Stopped watching long ago.Shut it down.I wish the bulk of the reality based television crap would vanish. Like the following…

Dancing with Stars
Big brother
Something Voice
Bachelor/Bachelorette

just for good measure, The View could be tossed on the heap too.

Steven Tyler and J-Lo were fired. They were completely useless. They had to bring in that other guy just do add some actual commentary. Jimmy Lavine???

I am so delighted J Lo is gone. It seemed like her attitude was that show existed to promote J Lo, and the singing competition was secondary. So yippee, no more cheesy performances by her and her boytoy, and no more lame comments (”I am getting goosies!”). Has she ever just stood up on stage and simply sung a song without the whole entourage of dancers, wind machines, etc? I doubt it. I hope they get Jimmy Lovine to be a judge.

I only watch the auditions to laugh at the idiots who think they can actually sing, but after that i never keep watching. If the show continues it might help to have a panal of judges that can actually sing! I mean lets face it JLo had a music career because she is an amazing dancer/preformer not for her vocal chops. I think having a real songstress, like Mariah would be great, plus she is a little cooky, could be entertaining!

Josh, what the heck does color have to do with anything…. I see this country still has a loooooooonnng ways to go to just accept people for people and not for their race or color of their skin. Amazing – All i can do is pray for people like this Josh individual!!!!

Race and gender should not be the criteria for selecting judges. But if I have to sit and look at Mariah wiggling and spilling her rack out of her clothes on every show, count me OUT! The sad thing is I think she is really talented, but her “look at me, I’m sexy” demeanor cheapens her and will distract from the contestants.

this is what happen to ” Josh”…..from what the Black Shepherd has observed…

poor little unattractive (I am assuming its a guy since he hates women, I wonder how he got into this world? Hatch? oh nevermind, dont bother to answer that one)..

First No woman would give him a second look..aka the hate women (You must be butt ugly)
Josh went into a black gay bar , called “hole in the wall” where the lowest of all races go. (gays come in different shades like the rainbow)..Josh however wanted him a black thug a so called Black Mandingo (one of Josh’s fantasies is to Score with a Mandingo Warrior….so he tries to hit on him by buying him drinks..taking him back to his Studio apt. Thug pulls out gun. takes Josh’s wallet..lab top, Flat screen, and car keys..and Passes on the Sex. Now Josh hates blacks.and women. poor fellow.

Hey folks – please keep the comments to the topic of J. Lo leaving “Idol” without turning this into an argument about race. If you can’t keep the comments relevant to a singing competition on TV, I’ll have to close comments to everyone, which I really hate to do.
Thanks,
Melissa

Melissa,

Thank you for stepping up earlier. The music blog and the Misadventures in Atlanta are the only ones that I can stomach now on the AJC website, because your topics are fun and the comments on each blog stays on the subject and are more respectful.

Back to the subject, I agree with Ellen, American Idol should go.

I agree with Ellen too… Idol has already over-stayed its welcome. I, like countless other TV viewers, am already burned out on this reality TV over-load.

With Fox renewing Idol for season 12, and having the taks of hiring 2 new judges. I hoping that season 12 will be its last.

As for other reality shows… I’d really like for CBS to end The Amazing Race… not sure on if and when they plan on ending Survivor either. NBC needs to end The Biggest Loser. Other than Fox needing to end Idol, they need to end Hell’s Kitchen too. ABC would be better off ending The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

We’d like to see quality, scripted programming for a change.

It slipped from #1 overall in the ratings this past season to #2 behind Sunday Night Football. Fox wouldn’t take this off the air even if George W. Bush, Octomom, and Lindsey Lohan were named as “judges”.

Some questions to ponder:

1. Why do people think, just because they quit watching something YEARS ago, that it shouldn’t be entertaining to others? The world does not revolve around an individual’s point of view.

2. Why do people think, just because they don’t like something, no one else should like it either?

3. Why do people think that just because people spend time talking to other people on a blog that it is the only thing they EVER do and they obviously don’t “have a life”?

4. Why do people think that anyone who doesn’t like an actor or singer or performer that they really like is a “hater”?

We don’t live in George Orwell’s 1984. We don’t all have to think alike to be good people.

“The WORLD does not revolve around One Person’s Point of View”

You slayed all of them…That is the Statement of the year..that should be placed in a Frame in bold letters at the Beginning of each blog..Numbers 2, 3, 4. are thought provoking questions..but some folks probably will never be able to answer those question. I guess thats just how humans are.

Well said Deirdre.

The show needs to end when it becomes obvious to everyone the judges have pre-selected their winner. Example — the 2nd place finisher in this last season. Voters made it clear they didn’t want her at the top, but who cares, the judges did.
