The band in 1964.
Maybe it will make you feel old. Or maybe it offers the opportunity to revel in some genuine rock ‘n’ roll nostalgia.
But today marks the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones, based on the band’s first show at London’s Marquee Jazz Club, when they were billed as the Rollin’ Stones.
On Wednesday, the group – a bit more weathered these days – reconvened in front of the club for an anniversary photo.
Last month, the band debuted a new logo to celebrate its anniversary and in recent weeks, Keith Richards has intimated that the group will likely play one show this year in honor of their 50 years and tour more extensively in 2013.
But for now, take a look back at one of rock’s greatest innovators…and, if you want to take a closer look at some Stones pics, we’ve got a present for you.
The kind folks from The eBook People are providing a free 2,000-page e-book of “50 Years: The Rolling Stones – Views from the Inside, Views from the Outside (Part 1)” for us to give away (the book is available on Amazon and iTunes).
Keep in mind that you need to have a device on which to read it, but if you’re interested, leave a comment below and we’ll randomly choose a winner at noon Friday.

The band that epitomizes the good, bad and ugly of rock ‘n’ roll more than any other in history. They were innovators during the Brian Jones’ era, a careening bluesy-rock train in the Mick Taylor years, and musical showmen (and later statesmen) with Ronnie Wood. All worthy of accolades in their own right, but an unparalleled legacy in its entirety.

I’m 63 years old. I grew up with this band. I last saw them live in Atlanta during the Voodoo Lounge tour. Mick Jagger did the whole Jumping Jack Flash 15 feet away from my Wife and I. It was transcendental. This was 25 plus years into their touring career and they absolutely did not mail it in. Mick must have covered six miles during the show going from one side of the huge stage to the other. Everyone got more than their money’s worth. I bet they still put on a great show. On a sad note we will never know what else Brian Jones could have contributed to their legacy – he died so young. Mick recently said that was the best version of the band. Things were never the same after he left.

If you haven’t read “Life” by Keith Richards, you really need to do so. You will learn things like where the name “Voodoo Lounge” actually came from.
