Van Halen debuts new song with David Lee Roth

Van Halen – Tattoo from Van Halen on Vimeo.

Now we know what that cryptic black and white video on Van Halen’s website meant last week – it’s the clip to accompany the band’s new song, “Tattoo.”

While the song doesn’t reach out and throttle you, like some VH fans might have hoped for and expected, at least the lost art of guitar soloing is back.

“Tattoo” is the first new music featuring Roth since he contributed two songs to the band’s 1996 “Best of Volume 1”’ CD (“Can’t Get This Stuff No More” and “Me Wise Magic”). However, the impending “A Different Kind of Truth” album, due Feb. 7, marks the first full-length Van-Halen-with-Roth collaboration since the band’s monster “1984” album.

The quartet’s upcoming tour (which arrives at Philips Arena April 19, on sale Jan. 28) isn’t the first time the three originals have reunited, though their 2007-08 tour together — also with Eddie Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang, on bass — is best described as inconsistent, depending upon the night and the city.

What do you think of the new tune? Classic VH or better left unheard?

Hated it! I’m more into Clay Aiken or Gaga then this head-banging guitar-weilding noisefest.

Allways hated bands like Van Halen, Rush, U2 and Journey.

Give me Cher any day!

This is one of the all time best bands. Cut some slack if if you listen to the song a few times it does kick ass. Hate all these perfect people in the world that cant even sing a tune!!! Wait for the album I bet it will have a ton of surprises, they are still a force in todays music.

Love the cheap shots why are so many people bitter you have had many Van Halen looks over the years and everyone did their job! Lets get back to the real Van Halen love Sammy but it was an entire different sound as great as it was wasnt Dave!

LIke the song but some of the lyrics had to be written while they were partying a little bit too hard.

Swamp meat salad , drench that cat , show me that dragon magic. LOL!

Sure miss Michael Anthony bass playing and vocals.

I give it a B+. Good sound considering this is their firs studio album in almost 14 years.

It was a good show in 07, I bet it will be good this time.

always a good show. Nothing bad about Wolfgang but Michael would have been cool to see with them.

Save yourself the trouble and start listening at the 2:35 mark. Eddie’s still got licks, but the the rest of the song isn’t that great.

Not bad, but for my money just sing the old stuff and dance for me monkey boy. Don’t need anything new.

Always been a huge VH fan, more Sammy than Dave, but this song ain’t doin it for me. Don’t get me wrong it’s great to hear Eddie playing again but Dave is just too…….over the top maybe? Not sure what it is about him but the Van Hagar version just had more edge. I’ll go see them just to say I saw both leads but miss Sammy.

Swamp meat salad??? Seriously???
Um… no… The lyric is Swap Meet Sally. Stamp Tramp Tat. Mouse-wife to Mom-shell in the time it took to get that new tattoo…

I like the song. It sounds like classic VH, but it would have been a deep track on the 6-pack. It’s a song that you would skip over when you first got the album, but after a few listens it grabs you.

It’s a track loosely based on the riff from “down in flames” – a song from the 76 demo days.
The album also has “She’s the Woman” and “Bullet Head” from way back when. Those have more aggressive riffs that typically do better as radio play.

I’ve been a VH van for a long time, and I’ve waited over 25 years for this album. Dave sounds great and Eddie seems sober. What more can a fan ask for?

Song is catchy believe it or not. It grows on you. Listen, when VH came out with 1984 and the first single was ‘jump’ all of us fans were going, WTF?? AND it too grew on you and then it went to #1. As for Eddie, He is clean (for now) and his chops are fantastic. They sure do miss Anthony’s background vocals though.

Sorry, but that’s just sad and horrible.

Eddie still has his chops and the solo is the only decent thing about this song, the rest is from hunger. Gawd-awful.

Thank goodness I still have great memories of them playing way back when back in the Omni.

Been a die hard VH fan a long time and I like the song a lot. No, it doesn’t have the same punch as Panama or Unchained, but I really do like the groove of this song – a return to the ‘brown’ sound. I do miss Mike’s backing vocals though. I met him once, and he’s pretty cool guy. Most fans I’ve talked to like it, but you just can’t please everyone. If ‘Aint Talkin’ ‘Bout Love was the new single (instead of being on VH 1), there would probably be people that didn’t like that song either.

I hope this new album is comprised of more than just 30 year old re-worked songs. I know it’s their choice to do that if they want, but seriously? For those thinking that Eddie still has it and these are killer licks, solo’s, etc are you serious???? Let us go back to…..anything before OU812

Come on….Really? This is music? I heard it yesterday on the radio and thought it was one of those joke commercials for car insurance or something until I realized who it was. SUCKS!! VH died when they kicked out Sammy. I will NOT be buying this album. There’s only one way to rock, and this is NOT the way.

If this is the lead single for this effort, sorry, no sale. And this is NOT the “old” Van Halen, it’s actually the FOURTH different version of the band. While not as bad as VH III with Gary Cherone (whom I’m a huge fan of, but he doesn’t belong in this band) without Mikey and his contributions this sounds more like a DLR solo effort (and not the good one, think “Sensible Shoes”) with EVH doing a guest lead. Right off the bat it’s got that drone-y quasi-ripoff of “Slow Ride” (though even slower) and struggles to do anything interesting. I’m not gonna crucify it but I’m also not gonna pay $160+ for an evening of this. Can’t imagine any of the old material sounding that good without Mikey either.

…. not to mention if this is just a re-hash of old demos. That’s just sad.

Good lord people. It’s just the first single. She’s the Woman and Bullethead are both blow your doors off rockers that fans of the original Van Halen have been begging them to release for ages. I find it refreshing that they are listening to their long time fans for once. And complaining that they wrote new songs out of old bits that they wrote in the 70’s? What’s wrong with that? It’s from songs they started and never took the time to finish…not like they are ripping off another artist. The song certainly doesn’t have DLR’s best lyrics….but it’s new VH and that info alone makes me happy.

…and you Dumba**es that think they should still sound like their former selves are idiots. People need to also realize that while having Mike would be preferrable, he himself said that if he “had a kid as talented and cool as Wolf he would want to play with him too.” So the world gets two great bands, Chickenfoot and Van Halen. Plus, truth be told, Wolf’s presence helps Ed lay off the sauce…and if he hits the bottle again, bye, bye Van Halen completely. I think Wolfgang has done a lot to at least give us Van Halen as we now know it versus none at all.
