Somebody get me a doctor! We though it would never happen, but looks like the pull of money and adulation — and, perhaps, the fact that they were so good together — was too strong to keep the Van Halens and David Lee Roth apart forever. But poor Michael Anthony, the band’s original bassist, is still persona non grata, apparently. Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli’s son Wolfgang is still the band’s bassist.

The band reunites with its original lead singer for a tour that lands at Philips Arena on April 19. Along for the ride is Kool and the Gang. Yes, you read that right. Lightly funky, R&B pop outfit Kool and the Gang of “Celebration” fame will be opening the show. “Jungle Boogie” was a pretty great tune, but your guess is as good as mine as to why these two are pairing up. Seems like a very odd bill.

Tickets for the show are going on sale Jan. 28 at all Ticketmaster outlets. Some other tour dates are already on sale.

The band celebrated the announcement with a show at New York’s Cafe Wha? Thursday night, and even debuted a song from the band’s upcoming new album, “A Different Kind of Truth,” out Feb. 7. Check out a video with (not very high quality) clips from the show.

Saw them on 2007 at Gwinnett Arena, and they were simply superb. Should be even better at Philips. This will be a good year for great music, with Van Halen, Roger Waters, and possibly AC/DC playing shows here.

I must say Kool & The Gang to open up for them is absolutely brilliant. I’m certain Dave had a lot to do with that. LOL. Anyway…I am a long devoted fan of DLR period VanHalen…and I WILL be there!!!

Oh and yes, I saw them twice-in 2007 and early 2008…Greensboro, SC and at the Phillips. The Greensboro show was GREAT…second show on the tour!! The Phillps show? Not so hot…Dave was getting on Ed’s nerves by that time. LOL.

The reporter seems to not know that this version of the band did a hugely successful tour in 2007-2008. Ever hear of research? Or at least Google?
