Van Halen (the David Lee Roth edition) coming to Atlanta in April

Somebody get me a doctor! We though it would never happen, but looks like the pull of money and adulation — and, perhaps, the fact that they were so good together — was too strong to keep the Van Halens and David Lee Roth apart forever. But poor Michael Anthony, the band’s original bassist, is still persona non grata, apparently. Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli’s son Wolfgang is still the band’s bassist.

The band reunites with its original lead singer for a tour that lands at Philips Arena on April 19. Along for the ride is Kool and the Gang. Yes, you read that right. Lightly funky, R&B pop outfit Kool and the Gang of “Celebration” fame will be opening the show. “Jungle Boogie” was a pretty great tune, but your guess is as good as mine as to why these two are pairing up. Seems like a very odd bill.

Tickets for the show are going on sale Jan. 28 at all Ticketmaster outlets. Some other tour dates are already on sale.

The band celebrated the announcement with a show at New York’s Cafe Wha? Thursday night, and even debuted a song from the band’s upcoming new album, “A Different Kind of Truth,” out Feb. 7. Check out a video with (not very high quality) clips from the show.

I would have to believe they would do Jump at some point. Don’t know if DLR can do those aerial splits anymore though.

Hope tickets are cheaper than past VH shows since they fired Michael Anthony and replaced him with Wolfgang (cheaper). They are saving a ton on their bassist. Can they please pass on the savings to us?

They were awesome in 2008 at phillips! Roth was at the top of his game…i had wanted to see them since the early 80’s and they lived up to it and presented a modern Van Halen..can’t wait for the show..

Have never seen them live. I like some of their music. I’m a 42 year old metal head. I have seen it all. HOWEVER……having Kool and the Gang open is freaking BRILLIANT!!!!!!! All VH lovers from the 80’s have to admit they like K&tG that era too…………..

They were sad to watch and listen to the last time around, just like Aerosmith their last time around. I am done with wheelchair rock. Give me a Nickelback or a Korn concert any day, and I am almost 60, and I am real tired of listening to “classic” rock. Just another word for old, burnout music.

I’m tired of old dudes that go to my Korn and lame Nickelback shows acting like they still rock, even though they’re almost like 60 or something. Geez, they’re almost as sad as Van Halen or Aerosmith.

Kool and the Gang are so much cooler than than the Van Halens. David Lee is just as cool, just has poor taste in back-up bands.

The very first concert I ever saw was their 1980 Invasion tour for Women and Children First. It was general admission seating and my ticket was $9.50. I ended up seeing them two more times with Roth and once with Hagar (that awful “Monsters of Rock” stadium tour). In the dozens of big concerts I ever saw, the top 3 were those three shows with DLR. That lineup put on spectacular shows. They were the ultimate showmen.

A Van Halen reunion with Sammy Hagar up front, I’d pay $500 for a ticket. A Van Halen reunion with a balding, aging, self-absorbed, narcissistic, screeching David Lee Roth trying to prance and preen and dance and pose all over the stage like it’s 1978, all while bungling up the lyrics and refusing to do a great portion of the VH catalog (1985-1996)… no thanks, I’ll pay YOU to not make me go. Saw Sammy a few years ago and he is still amazing… he has real musical chops. DLR is a sad caricature of himself.

Hope to heaven they’ve worked out their technical issues. The energy and attitude was generally good last time, and flag-waving Dave even appeared to have hit the HGH to get lean and buff. But the sound system was absolutely amateur. So completely distorted you couldn’t tell which song was being played and they even lost vocals and guitar completely for extended periods. At one point Eddie had to ask if we could hear him, then finally just threw his hands up as if yo say “oh well, I still get paid”. Love Van Halen, but I think I’ll pass this time.

buttwaduino: judging from the Cafe Wha? show in NYC, the new lineup still has the same sound quality issues, except they’ve narrowed it to DLR’s mike. All you could hear in that show was Wolfgang’s bass and Eddie’s riffs. DLR was totally drowned most of the night.

Having KITG open is a poor idea for sales… who wants to see a disco group with a rock group? They would have done better to open with an up an coming local band like VH was at one time.

The Philips show was alful. The worst concert I ever attended, Sound went out, sound never was the same. Dave must had changed 5 or more mic’s and no help. They should had gave my $125 bucks back! and as Wolf on bass, he sucks and was reported they used anthoney’s bass recording during the tour.

Even when the classic rockers reach 80 yrs old they will still out rock, out sing, and kick butt on almost any groups now. Also nearly 98-99% of the supposed rock groups now will be simply forgotten none of them are legendary like Led zep, aerosmith, rolling stones, boston and the list goes on and on. Let us pray that the music channels of tomorrow will always keep the rock alive!!

Nepotism. Eddie replaced the excellent bassist, backup singer, and showman Michael Anthony with his mediocrity of a son. Loyalty doesn’t exist in the VanHalen Camp, so the devil with them.

I saw them in Atlanta at the Omni around late Summer of 1980 (1980 Invasion Tour). They were good, and L-O-U-D!!! Liquor and beer was sold in the mezzanine area, and those around me were drunk off their butts. A drunk girl behind me accidentally poured a drink down my collar doing one of her many woo-hoos. My ears were ringing all the way home. Good times.

Snippet of the new single popped up on YouTube (title is “Tattoo,” look it up yourself) last night. Sorry to say this, but it sucks. If the rest of the new album is this bad, I won’t bother with the tour date… last time they were here, Dave’s voice was shot by the middle of the set, and Eddie was a complete wasteoid, couldn’t play his own parts any more. And the PA went out during his solo.

Saw em im 1977 at Fox,1978 at Omni,1979 and 1984 at Omni! They rocked. Last show at Phillips was messed up due to poor sound technicians. Took opening ac Autograph in 1984 to Cheetah! They loved the ladies of Cheetah!
