T.I. talks to Howard Stern about new book, Atlanta

T.I. is really pressing his new status as an “author.”

The rapper made the publicity rounds in New York Tuesday to hawk his new work of fiction, “Power & Beauty: A Love Story of Life on the Streets,” and stopped by Howard Stern’s morning show on Sirius XM to talk about the book, his own literary pursuits and his recent prison stint.

In case you had any inkling of pity for the guy, consider this: T.I. told Stern that before heading to prison on weapons charges, he was making $225,000 per concert and another $75,000 to $100,000 for an after party appearance. So yep, in one night he could have conceivably pulled in $300k.

While in prison, T.I. said he got into one fight, admitting that he it started because “I wanted to fight.” He also mentioned that while incarcerated he “ran a little crew” and was generally respected by his prison mates.

When talk turned to “Power & Beauty,” Stern asked the rapper to name his favorite books and for a second, it seemed he might pull a Sarah Palin and offer an empty stammer.

But T.I. quickly recovered – surely this question has popped up elsewhere while on a book tour – and named Jay-Z’s “Decoded” and Sister Souljah’s “Coldest Winter Ever.”

T.I. said the goal with his own book was to create a piece of work “that equally entertains and educates my generation – because there isn’t enough reading going on.”

Stern also asked the rapper about his efforts to talk a man contemplating suicide down from a Midtown Atlanta building last October.

T.I. said he told the guy that “whatever it was that had him up there, we could fix it.”

When Stern wondered why T.I. hadn’t made the move to a celeb-friendly Mecca such as New York or L.A., he audibly shrugged and said, “I love Atlanta. That’s my home.”

The newly crowned author is also on a book-signing tour and will appear at Books-A-Million in Peachtree City at 7 p.m. Thursday to scribble his signature on “Power & Beauty.”

He’s the most talented rapper in ATL since the glory days of Outkast. Glad to see that’s he’s back on track, but sucks that he’s getting tested and can’t even smoke. I never pinned him an author but I’m intrigued by the storyline of his new book.

All of you are cracked out who praise T.I. and act like he’s so inspirational. I mean good for him if he’s really gonna change, but come on!!! What’s next? Praise Gucci Mane for all he does to teach us the good way to live. You people need help!!

I’m happy for him. Hopefully he will stay out of trouble now. :) There are so many haters on this page. It’s really sad. They OBVIOUSLY do not have a life and are very unhappy and do not want anyone to be successful in life because they are losers! For you loosers…all I have to say is “Too bad…suck it up and get over it!!!” :)

Are you serious?!! Changed? But, bragging on how he “ran a little crew” in jail? I guess they were little (literally). But, how have you changed T.I.? What are you doing to better yourself? When are you going to grow up? Hate to see this, but it seems like to me, he is a talented artist, that is going to waste his life away.

Tim, T.I. does a lot for the city very, very quietly, from donating food, toys and other items to folks who are in need, mentorship to troubled youth, speaking in schools and other organizations, donating LOTS of his own money and I can go on and on.

Yes, he has made some mistakes LIKE WE ALL HAVE, but he puts his money and time in more than any other person of his status that I know of.

T.I. is probably the only celeb that I know of, that can go to the hood and the boardroom and garner the same respect! Most of all, people listen to what he has to say and take it to heart!

Well Mike when I hear people praise someone as if he sets a good example for kids or something even greater then I have to call Bulls#&t when I read it. Sorry if you don’t like my response, but that’s my opinion!! What have I dont for Atlanta, oh I dont’t know….how about being a good citizen that doesn’t get arrested on gun charges or dope charges. How about working, helping the economy, paying my taxes. How about helping family and friends that also live in Atlanta instead of bringing them down. You must be one of those people that thing just because someone has money and if they spread some of that around that makes them a good person? Well actions speak louder than dollars and unless T.I. can prove that he has changed no one should be praising him or what he has done. Just this mans OPINION.

It is interesting that T.I. wrote a book. The storyline of the book is intriquing. A brother and sister growing up by way of the streets. The two are very, very close. Their mother always told her son to watch his sister’s back and not her backside. He would peep through the keyhole while she undressed some nights and she would peep at him when he got out the shower. But, nothing ever developed. BUT, the night of their mother’s death, they bother were in deep pain and she crept into her brother’s bed for comfort. Soon they were in the throes of an incestuous relationship……

I heard the interview, and thought it was really good. Howard was facinated with prison life and T.I. was very honest and forthcoming. I was already a fan of T.I. but I love it when I hear people I’m already familiar with on Stern because he always draws something more out of them than your typical vapid entertainment whatever shows.

HOPEFULLY HE HAS LEARNED

I am hoping & praying that he will stay on track this time. Hopefully these other young rappers, Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, Waka Flaka, etc. will also learn from life’s lessons and use their heads. STOP DOING STUPID STUFF TO GET IN TROUBLE. You have no one to blame for it, but “YOU”

I resent him for making that much money. I appreciate his music and he is talented, but its baffling he made that much money.

There are people who produce real long lasting benefits to humankind who make $50K a year. He’s making $300K a year being a terrible influence on our youth and is unable to even stay out of jail. I know he produces art, but its just astonishing.

I am by no means a fan of the Hip Hop culture. But violence and sex play out in other genres of music and entertainment as well. So most rappers go to jail, do drugs, and are womanizers!! Ever heard of Motley Crue, Poison, KISS, Def Leppard, Kid Rock, Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Jr…….those guys can probably trump all the violence, arrests, drugs, and women that these rappers have had to endure. So give me a friggin break……

Let he without sin cast the stone first

stop hatin on TiP and let the man live his life, nobody ever asked him to be a role model for kids. Jus because you stay out of jail doesnt mean your a good role model. Look at Diddy, stays clean and outta trouble, but you think its a good image to be galavanting around with multiple women having countless kids…didnt think so. He uses music to portray his life experiences, what he knows and how he feels. What do you want him to rap about, growing up in an upper middle class family, attending classes, goin to college and bein a succesful businessman? he didnt have those opportunites, so he doesnt know of that life style. If you think hes a bad influence on kids, then dont let your kids listen to it. It goes back to the parents being completely oblivious to what their children watch and listen. Parents jus dont give 2 sh!ts anymore, and that generation is what is running our country, and thats why our country sucks balls…bc the generation in charge is lazy and could care less about anyone but themselves.

T.I. has actually done alot for the community, things that an everyday citizen wouldnt notice, but someone who reads into the life and times of T.I. would understand. Dont sit and critisize something you know nothing about…

Are you kidding?

@ JF McNamara…hey you should not resent anyone for making money. If it is legal and all that…this is AMERICA, and stories like this can only happen here. BUT if you were to have resentment, resent the Wall Street Crooks who get $20M bonuses (sometimes backed by taxpayer money). I hear so much hatred for the “greedy” athlete, but less vitriol for the white collar CEOs who to me are far worse!

As an old lady, I will be at Books A Million to buy and read your book…we can all learn from all of us! Stay human!

Whoever said that, that he learned his lesson. That’s what was said the first time he was locked up and then he got caught again. Rappers are just ignorant and dumb, you can’t expect them to make wise decisions and have a bigger picture. That’s why they rap, it’s not much to it. Ask them about some real issues they will go blank like Wacka Flocka on 106 & Park when they ask him about voting.

They just need to stay on CD or iTunes, they don’t need to be out in public making any type of appearances

When Stern wondered why T.I. hadn’t made the move to a celeb-friendly Mecca such as New York or L.A., he audibly shrugged and said, “I love Atlanta. That’s my home.”

Doesn’t Stern know that Atlanta is the same Mecca. New York is the east coast, L.A. is the west, and Atlanta (along with Miami for vacations only) is the Mecca of the South!!

TIP and all,

I don’t care if you think I’m a hater. I am trying as hard as I can to get rich. I’m sure you’re trying too. Despite all my efforts, I’m still middle class, so I resent him.

I’m well aware that the only reason I’m poor is because I’m too incompetent to get rich. Look around though. How many people do you know making $300K a night? There are doctors who save lives who don’t make that in a year. If that is what the market is for his services then his skill is highly valued and he can make his money, but how is that fair? He’s a singer who can’t stay out of jail versus a doctor who saves sick kids.

The tone of this article…SMH…just because you are unfamiliar with an urban artist such as Clifford Harris (T.I.) doesn’t mean you can write such a crappy article!

Many blessings to T.I. on his road to becoming a better man! Atlanta loves you, always has and always will!!! We appreciate everything you have done for the inner city youth of Atlanta! It means so much to see someone like you in the media, that they can directly relate to!…….Never mind the negative comments and pessimistic media coverage!
