It’s never a good sign when the main act doesn’t come on stage until 9:50 p.m. At least not at Chastain Park Amphitheatre.
Maybe no one bothered to tell Erykah Badu before Saturday night’s show that as one fan put it “they don’t play that at Chastain.”
An hour after neo-soul (who’s sounding more rock than soul these days) singer Bilal left the stage, the only sign of Badu was a few members of her band tipping on stage to begin a smooth instrumental groove without her. Five minutes later, at 10 minutes till 10, the sold-out crowd got their first glimpse of Badu with her blonde mohawk fashioned hairdo.
For the next hour and 10 minutes, she put on show that was smoldering with funk, slick groves, and good old-school reminiscing. Just as she was about to put the show in high gear, the sound was gone. A startled Badu started checking her mic, before realizing she had been cut off for the night. It was after all 11:01 p.m. Fans started to boo as Badu took her final bow and exited the stage.
Yes, there are a million reasons why fans love Badu. Here a just three — along with one reason why she drives them crazy:
Free your mind. Without a doubt, Badu is one of the best lyricist out there. She gives you food for thought: I was born under water with three dollars and six dimes. She makes you check yourself: One day all them bags gone get in your way. So pack light. And she makes us laugh: You don’t ever buy me nothin’. See everytime you come around you gotta bring Jim, James, Paul and Tyrone.
New Amerykah Part 2 (Return to Ankh). Her new album, released last March, with its strong instrumentation, infectious hooks and romantic theme, reminds us of the Badu fans fell in love with after her debut album “Baduizm.” Hearing Badu perform it live? Priceless.
Way back. That’s where the 39-year-old Dallas singer took Atlanta Saturday night. Not just with her own songs like “On & On” and “Love of My Life,” but classic hip-hop beats like Whodini ’s “Friends,” Slick Rick’s “La Di Da Di” and N.W.A.’s “Life Ain’t Nothin…” By this point, you’ve forgiven the tardiness, thinking being on time is overrated if you can lose yourself in late ’80s, early ’90s for just a few moments. But then, you don’t really expect it to come to an end so soon, which brings us to the reason she drives us crazy:
Punctuality. Being on time has never been Erykah Badu’s thing. She is notorious for being fashionably late and yes, even rudely late. It’s not fair to fans that they spent more time waiting in their seats, than actual time listening to music from Badu. It’s not fair that just as you’re about to sway into “Didn’t Cha Know,” all you can hear is the audience singing. Silent microphone, just like that.
But rules are rules, and perhaps Badu should take to heart what she told fans early in her set:” Thank you for being patient. I don’t take it for granted.”

Rude is the right word. Her fans in attendance should be mad, instead they will keep buying her music and concert tickets, and she will go right on treating them like cattle.

Boycott Chastain? Please… it’s one of the best venues in the city. It sits directly in the middle of a residential neighborhood… why shouldn’t they have a noise ordinance that’s enforced? Instead, perhaps Diva Badu should refund 50% of the ticket price to her fans that only got to hear half the show… probably because she was backstage smoking weed while her fans waited for her to appear.

Chastain is fine but it’s in the middle of a neighborhood so late night noise restraints are in order. It’s no secret that the music has to stop at 11:00, she knew it, her managers and crew knew it. Showing up that late just shows that she doesn’t care about her fans.
She should take a note from 38 Special, who was there on Friday night. They started on time and floored it until the last second they could play. Way to go guys!

It’s like being in the doctor’s office, you better be on time, but they have you waiting forever, just to see you for five minutes! Respect people’s time! Show up and show out! Badu has the talent, but that so disrespectful to have her fans waiting like that!

I wouldn’t waste my time or money on some diva that can’t get herself to the stage on time. Chastain should put it in their contract that in order to play their venue, you must start on time or not be paid and the money refunded to the patrons.

It was my first Erykah Badu concert. Her vocals and stage presence were great, in my opinion. I was indeed entertained and amazed by her talent. However, I’m never happy when someone–anyone–is not on time. And I could have done without the stroll down memory lane when she put her spin on classic rap songs. I’ve attended Diana Ross and Sting (both at Chastain), along with Smokey Robinson this summer. All were on time. If they can do it, then so can you Badu. Because of the lateness and “old school” cover song fest, I’ll have to give her a “C” at best.

Live music in Atlanta regardless of venue is some of the worst I’ve ever heard…and not because of the artists: It’s because of the people who attend these concerts. Well, they don’t treat them as concerts they treat them as events to show off their fine clothes, expensive wine and chit-chat(or openly howl) while the artist tries in vain to perform.
I love live music and while I worked as a photo journalist was able to secure photo pit perspective for many very talented people. They work hard when they play. It’s their heart out there and 99% of the people who attend concerts these days are so damned rude real fans of the MUSIC are left frustrated and angry because of the noise made by the crowd.
No thank you to live music these days. I’ll sacrifice the live music experience in favor of the true music beauty in my own head through a pair of amazing headphones.

Ms. Badu should have been told what the rules were and she should have stuck to those rules. She got paid to entertain people and those who paid a lot of money for those tickets got short changed. I think they should get 50% of their money back. You pay a lot for those tickets, the entertainer should be responsible. I don’t get this attitude….

@Mel – I agree. Chastain is a horrible place to go to listen to live music. @Mark7 has it right. People go there to been seen and to chatter over the performers. I’ve had the same problem at other venues. People around you gabbing away during the performace or getting on the phone and screaming ‘Hey Mom can you hear? I am at the James Taylor and Carole King concert! I’ll hold up the phone! Can you hear it? No! Okay Let me do it again! Can you hear it now?”…. Ugh. Very few places to go enjoy good live music in ATL. The crowd just ruins it. And Lakewood – Really? Are you kidding?

I agree wholeheartedly Mark7!! People are SO rude! They will stand RIGHT in front of you with a performer onstage and carry on a loud conversation so they can hear each other over the artist!!! It’s unbelievable! PLEASE do me a favor people – If you think concerts are venues for having conversations with your friends and talking on your cellphone, please STAY HOME!!!! hey tracy, i have some photos from last night. i sent them to ben and tyson. i was looking for you, but i guess that you came in at 9. i think that erykah did this on purpose. she has performed at chastian a few times before and was cut off the last time that she was there. i have to question why the show started at 8 on a saturday instead of 7. 7 to 11 gives erykah time to be ghetto late and still do the whole show, but then again it’s obvious that she probably did not want to do a whole set.

Badu is a great artist but Chastain is not for her. Unfortunately, I am amazed when a show starts on time but this is the first time I have been caught out there by the 11pm curfew. I could have skipped Bilal and went straight to Badu and that’s what her camp should have done for this venue. Next week they have 4 artists on the line up in one night and the show starts @ 7pm….you do the math. Curfew should be extended to 12 a.m. Its the weekend and the people in the area knew what they were buying into when they moved over there.

She’s hands down my favorite artist but after last night, not sure if I’ll be paying to see her again. Don’t play with my time and don’t play w/ my money. I sincerly appreciate the stroll down memory lane but if you only had an hour to perform, save that shhhh for an ontime performance. My friends and I were diggin’ this concert til it abruptly came to an END—We were lookin’ like WTF, is this some JOKE. How the heck are you an hour late for a CONCERT??? That’s rude, unprofessional and SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED. Since she performed 1/2 we should be refunded 1/2—-I don’t know her personally but SISTAH don’t stop being humble and taking your fans for granted…Fan are how you continue to get paid….
On a more positive note, I will say the CONCERT for the little time we has was ON FIRE—The girl is bad, raw, real and uncensored….I still love the CHICK but please be on time for your next show—Don’t cheat the next crew like you did me and my girls

This is not a Chastain problem. This is Miss Badu’s issue. Bilal left the stage at 8:45. Badu came on an hour or so later. She was GREAT but oh so late for a venue that is known for their 11 pm cutoff rules to the letter. I’m thinking her true intention was to perform for about 30 minutes anyway as she said ‘good night Atlanta’ shortly after she started, but continued to perform. I won’t even mention no sign of “Bag Lady”, “Tyrone” or “Window Seat”.

Let’s just put this to bed…there are some artists that, despite their artistic genius or talent, take fans (and their dollars) for granted and devalue a fan’s time! Eryka Badu and Anita Baker are two that fit into this category. I’d heard about Eryka’s outrageous behavior before, which is why she will never see ONE of my dollars. I had to learn the lesson the hard way with Anita — she gets no more either! The best way you can express you appreciation (or disgust) with any artist is to vote with your dollars! With these two artists, JUST DON”T GO TO THE SHOW…..

I have seen many shows at Chastain with opening acts and never had to deal with this. Its because there were opening acts, its because Erykah did not come out and keep you waiting for 1hr. Why turn this into a dislike for Chastian. The get the rules well in advance and she knew. You should be upset that you got played for a lot of money and not alot of soul! Thanks for this article because even though I like her I will never pay to see her now. The only noise ordinance at Chastain should be on the patrons who come to the shows, and chatter incessantly all the way through them. Yes, Erykah was rude and possibly clueless, or just assumed the rules didn’t apply to her, but bottom line is, you could have a gathering at Chastain, provide alcohol, brie, and pipe in recorded music, and 1/3rd of the patrons would never know the difference if an artist never set foot onstage.
The Fox is where artists go to be heard, Chastain is where audience members go to be heard…and seen.

This is not a Chastain issue. I work at Lakewood and everyone knows that at 11:01 the plug gets pulled, regardless of the act. It is a city/county noise ordinance that requires the sound to be shut off at 11PM. I believe that the same rules are in place up at Verizon in Alpharetta. If you want to play past 11pm, you have to play indoors.

Anybody who performs at Chastain knows the rules. They are given before-hand. It is the business of the artist and his/her manager to know the rules for the venue. Plus, Erykah Badu has played at Chastain before. And she has been cut off before. She knew.

Miss Diva a%$ Badu will never get my money. I don’t give a s&*^ how good she is. If she don’t respect her fans time why should I pay to see her in concert. She’s late all the time and I’m pretty sure she had no intentions of performing on time. As other posts said, her mamagement was very aware of the rules when they booked the venue so don’t blame it on Chastain. I’ve been to many concerts at Chastain and the artists started on time and was done performing on time.
Chastain is a decent park and everybody who’s been there or haven’t been there have heard the rules too. Why should they change their rules just because Miss Diva couldn’t get on stage on time? If you all don’t like the park, then don’t attend any more of the venues. RULES ARE RULES.

Chastain is a notoriously poor event for the music lover. The crowd is filled with people who just will not shut up and the music cannot be louder than 83 decibels. Verizon Amphitheatre and Lakewood are much better. The music is much, much louder which stops all the chit chat. @Kevin, I believe you are mistaken. All the past concerts that I have seen at Lakewood have gone past 11 PM.

In July, we went to see Ringo and his All Starr Band at Chastain. They started on time and played for a solid non-stop 2 hours plus at a high energy level. This was 2 days after Ringo turned 70 and had played in NYC. A true musical icon and an entertainment professional who was well received, even worshipped by the crowd. A different crowd than last night at Chastain nevertheless. But still an indication of how a concert can be made to work at Chastain if the headliner really wants it to happen.

Chastain is like dinner theater. I grew-up playing sports at Chastain and living in the neighborhood. The People that live around the park pay a lot of money for their homes and should be able to sleep in peace and quite. It still takes over an hour after the conceert to get the people out of the neighborhood. People go to Chastain to eat and enjoy good music. Yes, they chat and enjoy time with their friends, If you want to go to a rock show with punks screaming, puking, and smoking dope then please feel free to chose another location to go to the show. Chastain is not the FOX. Chastain is a fun night with friends, food, and wine at a show. It is like having the stereo on playing great music and having fun. If you don’t understand the concept, then go watch the Big Chill when they are making dinner and singing and dancing. If concerts at Phillips or the Fox are not places to be seen then why do people dress the way they do and act the way they act? I have never been to a concert anywhere that people don’t talk, screem, or sing along. From now on No noise will be made at any concert. People will sit in their seats and not make a noise until the song is over then they may OPREA CLAP between songs. Keep your money and your butt away from Chastain if you hate it so much.

Whats funny is that ticket prices are up, venues, promoters, management, and booking agents are taking losses but disrespectful artists are charging more than they ever have to show up late, inebriated, or just not show up at all. Contracts have very little power when artists ignore them. By the time you deal with courts and litigation and pay your own attorney you barely break even as a booking agent. I think artists should show more respect to thier fans and the people who work hard to get them work in the first place.

It’s amazing how far off topic some of you manage to take these discussions. Of course she knew what time the venue would cut her off, it was a part of her contract. Don’t make excuses for her. She had the entire hour that Bilal was performing to get herself and her mohawk together. If she wasn’t happy with the time constraints, she always had the option of choosing another venue. In the end, the people who live near Chastain got what they wanted: the revenue that the concert brought in and the power to tell patrons when to get out. The people who own and run Chastain got what they wanted and Erykah Badu got her fans’ money. The only people who got cheated were the fans who paid for a full concert but only got half of one and they already know who is to blame for that.
As far as the CPT comment, your ignorance is showing. Lateness is not a racial or cultural trait; it’s a lack of disrespect for other people’s time and it affects arrogant idiots of all shades.
Funny thing is, I have friends who speak endlessly about how “conscious” Ms. Badu is compared to other contemporary artists like Beyonce and Alicia Keys… All I’ll say is, I’ve never waited more than 10 minutes for a Beyonce show to start and I’ve always gotten my money’s worth.

Why vent your anger toward the venue when the problem lies directly with the artist… and they fully know every policy and rule of the venue. I’d bet my mortgage that she received everything that her contract and rider demanded, and then some. But the part of her contract that was not satisfied was her start time and the time she was to be on stage. And it’s her fault!! The promoter and the venue kept their part of the deal but she short changed the ones that ultimately pay the bill… which is the ticket buyers. If everyone there demanded 50% of their money back it should come out of her percentage of gate receipts. But it won’t and she will continue pulling these stunts and her fans will continue to pay the price. She won’t get a nickel of my money.

I found it rather interesting that they kept pushing the “meet and greet passes” they were selling so that fans could pay to hang out with Erykah after the show. Maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s a bad look to come out late, only give half a show, then expect folks to pay MORE money to see you for a few minutes afterward when you’ve already wasted their money AND their time.
Even when she came out late, she could have still adjusted her show and edited out all the non-Badu songs to make sure the fans at least got to hear her big hits- Tyrone, Bag Lady and her current single Window Seat. I would have been perfectly OK with not having to hear her renditions of old school rap, Zapp Band, etc.. That was about 20 – 30 minutes worth of time right there. The fact that she decided to do her whole show and feign “shock” when she was cut off tells me that she just doesn’t give a crap.

I live near Çhastain and would love to see music there regularly. I see live music all over the city very regularly. The bottom line with Chastain is this…unless you’re a 50 something that is there to sip wine and chat with your friends listening to a mellow act, it’s highly likely that you won’t like it. I have seen probably 10 shows there and have really liked 3 or so. The others were too quiet (the band is in fear of fines due to decibel levels) and ended too early. Bands that rock and want to get loud (as they should) should play somewhere else (i.e. Tabernacle, Lakewood, and I guess Verizon). Just know what you’re getting into when you go there and try to be as close to the stage as possible. And…the artist should start on time so they have ample time to play their whole show. That is just a no brainer.

YoungerthanthatNow – no one is forcing us, it’s just disappointing when it’s the only way to see your favorite artists. Some artists continue to return to Chastain – and don’t play other Atlanta venues – despite the rudeness of the audience. I’d gladly go see these artists at the Tabernacle or the Fox or Lakewood, etc if they would play there, but they go to Chastain, and sometimes I’m willing to give the rude Chastain folks another chance in hopes it has improved. Some shows, the audience is fine, others, they are so rude, you almost expect the artists to walk off mid-set. Some have (Randy Newman, Dan Fogelberg, and others back in the 80’s/90’s). But, then two years later, they’re back.
Enjoy Chastain if you like chatter over your music. I just prefer to go hear a performer, not small talk.

Once again, this is why I don’t even bother with Chastain. I’d rather not pay premium prices to listen to all the yuppie conversations going on around me. To bad these artist’s management companies don’t have enough respect for the artists or fans to book them at some place that’s known for music, rather than season-ticket wine-and-cheese picnic packages.

WELL ARTICULATED POAD!!!! A concert ANYWHERE is not a tennis match or a golf tournament where the behavior is dictated by tradition and etiquette! There are very FEW people who go to a concert by themselves! WHY NOT? Because it is about friends, family, good food & drink,ALL while listening to GREAT music! So don’t HATE on people who talk at concerts or Chastain! They are enjoying themselves and LIFE! Maybe those complaining about this concept should try it instead of whining.Or maybe your lives are just so pathetic you would rather have a bad time so you can B–TCH about that rather than telling your wife or friends at the end of the evening how much you enjoyed the experience! The noise ordinance is to protect people who live there. If that were you, you would want it enforced too! Two SOLID hours of music from anyone is getting your money’s worth>Badu should just be ashamed of herself for her arrogant attitude towards her fans that allow her to live a lifestyle that most only dream of! Patronize those who respect their fans>They are the ones deserving of it and not those who take their God given talent for granted and devalue their fan’s time as does Badu!

I refused to buy tickets to this show for this very reason. She pulled the same stunt the last time she performed at Chastain. She had the nerve to show up late as hell in grey sweat pants and a Jamaican t-shirt…like she was going to the corner store. I wad LIVID. They didn’t pull the plug but her band stopped playing at 11pm sharp. She has performed at Chastain a number if times (i’ve seen her twice there) and should be very familiar with there ordinances. I love her music but she totally disrespects her fans and the venue by showing up late. I will note that when she performs with other major acts she is punctual (ie., Jill Scott, Maxwell).

Chastain Park got big because of the Classy setting. Man, I know Nina Simone, Monk, and Bird played in Jazz clubs that were far from quite while they played. I think you can hear glasses clinking and the wait staff on a live Nina Simone recording from the Midtown Bar & Grill in Atlantic City. Boy those people were rude. I guess once you are paid a lot of money everybody should just put on their first grade manors. CHASTAIN PARK is an OPEN AIR NEIGHBORHOOD BAR with expensive Talent on Stage. In the sake of getting along, let’s all agree we have our own opinions (though we might not like some).
And to know Chastain is to love/hate Chastain. My first experience was in the 60’s when it was still Theatre Under the Stars. Dad took me and Big Sis to see South Pacific.
Can’t remember but prob in the 80s, Big Sis and I go to see Harry Connick, Jr. With all the talk, he finally asked his band to stop and told us, “It’s either you or me!” and I do believe he was ready to walk off the stage. I understand Garrison Kellar had some probs of late.
I enjoyed many rock shows in the 70s but it ain’t the 70s more.
I would suggest attending the No Table Set Up only shows. Then you won’t have the tables with the season ticket holders or their corporations who give the tables away for a meet n’ greet for someone out of town whom they’re trying to wine and dine.
Also, in Atlanta speak, this is the same as PDK. Which came first the airport or the homeowners?

Had season tickets for years. I gave them up after being soaked in rain for the umpteenth time. I had sold my extra tickets to a table to an acquaintance. The show never even went on. I found out we could get our money back and let the lady know about it since I felt bad about her loss. When I went to get my refund, she had gotten all 4 tickets refunded to her account, and then lied about it. She kept my 120.00 refund, and hers too. So much for doing the right thing. Some people are just real jerks.
No more sweating in the heat, ducking from lightening, listening to the idiot girl next to us yap on her phone, and walking 2 miles to park for me. If you want a great intimate venue, try the Ferst Center at Ga Tech. There are no bad seat and if your kids goes there like mine, tickets are $10 a piece with the added benefit of them coming with you.

Personally, I think the ‘late game’ is so played out. You can dress it up and call it ‘fashionlaby late’ or call it exactly what it is–rude! Erykah, as much as I enjoy her music and buy it, obviously did not recieve the memo that being rude to fans is just simply ‘played out.’ We all have options and her response to the fans who sat outdoors at a very hot Chastain Park, is simply just rude. Afterall, how long does it take to get a mohawk ready?! I blame her managers and handlers. Someone needs to shake her up and let her know that when she’s ‘timed out,’ we call you ‘played out!’

I still don’t see why there is so much bashing of the venue. Having worked for major venues and one of the largest promoters in the nation there are a few things that people may not understand.
First when an artist’s management chooses a venue, they are mainly looking for a venue with two criteria, 1) Is the desired date available? 2) can the artist sell out or come close to a sell out of the venue (empty seats are wasted money) If an artist can sell out Chastain but can not sell out a larger venue such as Lakewood, they will choose Chastain. Smaller venues are cheaper to book. Also to be considered is that if a tour is traveling to amphitheaters, it typically does not carry it’s own stage. When playing an arena such as Gwinnett or Phillips, you are required to bring your own stage and rigging which adds to the cost of the tour.
When an artists management is signing contracts with venues they are made aware of all regulations including noise and curfew regulations. They are notified again when the tour manager arrives at the venue at the load-in time for the show.
Having the plug pulled is the sole fault of the performer and if I paid for a ticket, I would be disputing the charge or demanding refunds from the artists’ management.
oh and @LoveLiveMusid, I have worked at Lakewood for the last 4 seasons and I can guarantee that no show goes past 11pm In fact, this year Dave Matthews cut it close and was about 25 seconds from having the plug pulled. Bands are notified by the production teams through their monitors or timers on stage of their time remaining. Ms. Badu has no excuse.

She obviously doesn’t give a crap about ya’ll, otherwise, she would bring her ass on stage on time. You guys keep putting up with it, she should do it AND take your money too. Only she won’t be doing it at Chaistain. I agree with the person who said she should have not been paid in full. I would say, “and give her fans 1/2 their money back”, but some of you like being disrespected by a so-called diva. Props to the fans that refuse to put up with her crap. Craig@ CD Warehouse, you attend concerts from acts such as After 7, Frankie Beverly and Maze and Babyface because you want to see talent from artist who respect their fans. I too have seen all three of these acts. I spent several years working at the Fox Theater and saw my share of concerts from artists of all types of music. It’s not the venue, it is the artist. We pay to see ego’s and that is what we get. This has nothing to do with Chastain being in a residential area. It has been that way forever. And every once in a while an ego gets in the way.
“You people” sounds like your implying that wherever it is you come from is better. BS. Atlanta has plenty of good shows and venues for people to choose from. Don’t categorize Atlanta like we don’t know music. Take a look at all the folks in the industry that live here. In fact, some of the artists you mentioned live here. Check fact homie!
Besides anyone who knows anything about people knows that black folks are always late. CPT baby.

If you watched her career and/or attended her concerts before, you know our girl, Eryka Badu, has often been subject to … um… last-minute things that … er… just comeup… or “someone got me upset just before the show, so I was delayed”. Combine that w/the “Chastain Way”, no suprize here. Chastain is still a wonderful venue – one that I maintain w/many hella-fun memories… and, that Eryka… as unexpected as some things can be w/her, I still enjoy her music and her “uh-oh, what’s she doing/saying/ranting-about now” shows.

I’ve tried Chastain twice, and will never go back. I understand the noise issue with the neighborhood, and I don’t require a lot of volume. But when it is hard to hear a rock band, even from the seats, it’s the wrong place. And the crowd! The show is THEM – not the music. That’s the worst part of the night!
And I agree – the start time should be dependent on how much the artist gets. Everyone should get a generous refund on their way out.

Dont really know whos at fault here. I suspect its Badu though. When Diana Ross came to Chastain it was my first time there. I have to say I was Extremely annoyed with the audience dragging their tails in there so late. The show did not begin until 8:50 didnt really kick off until after 9pm but I suspect it was the audience taking forever to set up their little picnic tables with their food wine and standing around chatting. No Doubt Ross was on time but refuse to come out and sing to a bunch of folks with their backs turned to her setting up picnic tables. If I were going to perform I sure as hell would not set foot on that stage until every one is Seated. I dont play to somebodys BACKS! So, I dont believe it was Diana being late I believe the Audience was Late getting their behinds set up. I was pissed as arrived two hrs before the show but when Ross finally did hit the stage I forgot about the late start. And her show completely lasted its full course. Ross dont have open acts. As for Badu her EGO appears to be a lot Larger than what she puts out. Apparently she has a fan base as the concert was sold out accourding to this writer but I doubt I wont be shelling out any coins to see this Self absorbed, person who is no where near level of Diana Ross Aretha Franklin or Patti Labelle. FYI everyone….Lakewood is in a residential neighborhood too! So, we expect respect and require an 11pm cutoff. The decibel requirement is higher, but those who have gone over it have been fined. The residents work hard with the City to make sure it is enforced. We also constantly have to fight to make sure the venue is improved and trashed is removed appropriately. So, please respect ALL neighborhood venues in the city. I love Erykah, but she was dead wrong to be that late and I am glad I had other plans and couldn’t make the show, because I would have been pissed too!

I hate it when people pay money to see an artist perform live and that singer, rapper, instrumentalist, is LATE! If the concert is supposed to start at a certain time and it is printed on the ticket when it is purchased, there should not be any DELAYS. Mariah is included in this complaint as well. To keep people who paid money waiting for 10,30,60, 90 minutes is unacceptable. I do not care if the band has to set up or if you have to warm up. Get it to the point so it can be done in a five minute time period and stop being rude, inconsiderate, disrespectful, to the people who helped make you RICH!

Also, me and my girls like to groove and dance and the folks around us seemed so uptight and would not let the funk Erykha was bringing move them! With all that said we had a good time until they shut her ass down! I thought that was completely uncalled for, but she was super late, if your opening act can be on time so should you! I am so glad I did not pay for those expensive tickets to see her. I am a huge fan, but concert tickets are not worthy of my cash nowadays. The only celebrity that I will ever shell out $100 for is Michael Jackson, but unfortunately I can no longer do this.

I saw her at Midtown Music fest before and she was late to that too, an hour late at least. She did put on a great performance but the mics were turned off then just like this show. It actually turned out pretty cool. She came into the audience, sat of the shoulders of two guys and the entire crowd sung to finish out the song. Classic! However, I’d hoped that wasn’t a normal thing for her being so late but I see its pretty common.

Anyone that has half a brain (along w/ their crew and management) is advised and will KNOW that Chastain shuts the mics off @ 11pm on the dot. I can’t agree with some of the other comments that Chastain sucks as a venue – it’s actually (atleast to me) one of the BEST venue’s I’ve ever been blessed to enjoy. Most concerts there – you can bring your own food and drinks (alcohol). The surrounding trees and open sky makes you feel like you’re in someone’s back yard enjoying a BBQ with friends. It’s a venue that if you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing – I HIGHLY recommend. Erykah should appreciate and respect her fans and give a 50% refund. If she’s too busy drinking down a bottle of Hennessy to come out and do her job and sing then she needs to own up to it and issue a refund.

I really like Chastain. I went and saw My Morning Jacket this year and Ben Harper a couple of years ago and thought both were great. With the rock set up you get more people that are into the music

Chastain is a nightmare. I can’t see why people actually pay to go there. It’s disrespectful to the artist and attendees that are there to actually see who’s performing. Chatter, people running around and dear LORD the parking nightmare – you’re lucky if you don’t miss complete acts with the parking! I’ve gone once to a friend’s show in the last 5 years. You basically have to pay me to go there. Verizon is MUCH NICER as was Stone Mountain Stadium that never really had the right backing. I’d like to see the shows at Chastian go more to Verizon. I’m sure Chastian’s neighbors would agree. Not to mention, anyone remember a few years back when a little news blurb came about the Chastain hadn’t passed a fire inspection in some time? I guess the chitlin circuit is still alive and well with venues like Chastian.

I won’t attend concerts at Chastain – I agree with others, the people around you only come to talk, drink and eat expensive take out. If I see someone coming to town I want to see, if it’s at Chastain, I won’t go, don’t care who they are…she knew she was wrong, but just doesn’t care about her fans…

Right on Chastain…Residental neighborhoods for rules…DIVA ATTITUDES DO NOT NEED TO SHOW UP AT THIS VENUE…Respect those who pay for the show, better yet, respect yourself. Time is important and some people have a habit of ignoring it.

Look you’ll bottom line, she was late! At Chastain that should never be allowed. At 10:45 when she was like why did you’ll turn down my music, I knew that it was time to go. But I continued to sit in my seat to get my “what I paid” for, a performance. At 11:00, I was not shocked. As a matter of fact, I cannot remember being in my seat at 11:00 at a Chastain Concert. The rules are clear. If you have neer been to Chastain then I’m sure you were shocked. But as for me…like I said to someone at the park….Chastain don’t play that…they will cut you off at 11:00…regardless of who you are or who you think you are!

I agree that it’s Erykah’s fault and not Chastain’s. I have seen her several times before at other venues in different cities and she was NEVER on time! I think her behavior is rude and inconsiderate to the people who pay their harded earned money to see her. I will NOT be attending any more of her shows!

I was there on Sat night. Erykah knew the rules. The rules are listed in any contract to perform at any venue regardless of whether the venue is located in a residential area or not. Erykah performed at Chastain in August 2009 so Chastain’s rules were nothing new for her. She should have been on time, period. It’s just plain rude to have your paying fans wait on you, especially in GA heat for over an hour. That being said, I truly enjoyed the part of the concert that was performed however if her standard is to be “fashionably late” I don’t think I’ll be supporting her concerts anymore.

It had been a number of years since I attended a concert, prior to attending Saturday’s concert. Me and five of my best friends attended the concert with great anticipation after spending approximately 480.00 on our tickets, not to mention other associated expenses. Prior to arriving “On Time” for the concert, we had been warned that all concerts held at Chastain end promptly at 11:00 due to the local ordinance. How can we have been informed while Erykah wasn’t????? It was clear that Erykah had no regard for the hundreds of dollars that her fans spent nor the local ordinance which called for a strict 11:00 stoppage. It was all about getting somthing(our money) for nothing for Erykah this past weekend. I should have bought the CD. Chastain is a great venue and has no responsibility for Erykah’s disregard for hers fans or the rules of the venue……

I am sorry for the fans this happened, but for the artist, glad it happened. I experienced a similar situation with a Chaka Khan-Patti Labelle concert I attended at the Coliseum in Columbia, SC. Chaka Khan opened for Patti and took stage almost an hour late! She sang old songs, sounded out of breath and was looking & sounding ROUGH to say the least. She had the audacity to take an additional 45 minutes to introduce members of her band. I was absolutely livid!!!!!!!!! Everyone I spoke to was in disbelief and was glad she left. Patti Labelle was awesome, which made up for some of Chaka Khan’s craziness. Mary J. Blige was nearly an hour late as well taking stage at the North Charleston coliseum then she only sang for like 2 hours if that. My stance~ I haven’t gone to a concert for anyone in over a year. I am putting my money towards my retirement

Just had a thought… I’ve often wondered how the artists that aren’t at Chastian from the mid-afternoon actually get in with the traffic. It’s taken me 3 hours easily of just sitting in my car listening to the show I should be watching. Maybe Erykah literally could not get into the venue before 9:50!… I’m sure that regardless of who, that’s been an issue.

I agree with Mark7. And I am a die hard Badu friend. Me and my 6 friends were partying the entire time when the woman next to us got nasty and asked me to sit down because I was in her way. It’s a concert folks! Stand up dance sway feel the music and the artist. If you wanted a quiet night at home to chat with your significant other stay at home. She even went to get “security” to ask me to sit down. I kept dancing and probably danced even more as a result of this. People go to one of these snooty Atlanta lounge I’d you want to be seen on the scene. ! And Badu come on girl stop doing is like that!

Chastain is a fabulous venue under the stars! and one of the best that Atlanta has to offer! No other venue comes close in class, not Verizon, not Mableton house, not lakewood which is to entertain masses. So when you want something upscale, you need to acknowledge it as such and adapt. I think the venue was great for Erikah and perhaps next time she will consider that she must be there on time. Nevertheless, the show was still great and fans did get to see and hear her non stop and enjoy the atmosphere and delight in their food and drinks!

The bottom line is that Ms. Badu needs to grow UP and stop this diva bit. She is a great talent, when she’s not tripping, and she needs to respect her fanbase. Chastain is the best place in Atlanta for a concert. Period!
Ms. Badu thinks she is larger than she is. If she keeps this up, her fan base will come to realize that she is just not worth it.

I was just as disappointed by the early shut down, but WOW… Anyone who actually saw the show knows that Ms. E Badu was FLOWING during the time she actually performed. I would rather see 45 minutes of an act as talented as Erykah than to see a ’studio artist’ who cannot sing, but covers with lip syncing and naked dancers. The woman was late, but it was well worth my time and money. I will always support Chastain, and I will pay to see Erykah anytime she is performing and I am able.

Kudos ‘ATL’ers’ ! Pro or con (Chastain / Miss Badu’s performance), the comments posted here have been surprisingly, intelligent and thougtful. First off Badu is my FAVORITE artisit in the world period!! We had great seats, my wine was kickin in. When she was cut off…I was like…ARE YOU SERIOUS? I did not know how late she really was because we were late looking for a parking spot. So when we stepped in, I was feeling real good because I didn’t miss any part of her show (LOL). I think I was more upset with Chastain than Erykah. I will continue to buy her music and go to the next concert. I wont go to Chastain ever again though. My two favorites are Jill Scott and Erykah….I still love you sistah. We really don’t know why you were late. I do think you owe your loyal fans an apology. Peace & Love

I was very disappointed that Badu, did not respect our time and money to get their on time, Chastian always had a 11pm shut off time, and she is playing in a very nice neighborhood, in Atlanta, if she would like a Diva entrance, then she came to the wrong location, I really like her music, did not care for alot of her new songs, and her undressing on stage. She seen to lose the person that had some class and came down very low level and because a little more ghetto, my disappointment of her performance and her lateness should take a look in the mirror, because the fans made her and they can take her away. No one is in disposable, so if you would like to become a foul mouth, no respectful person, this is my last concert, because I seen a beautiful, respectful woman once on stage and love you, but now we all make changing in our life, but we also need to see when the changing or bad and not good, God bless as you look in the mirror, as a woman and mother.

I thought Erykah Badu would be a great artist at Chastain. I was expecting to hear the sultry, funky soul music I came to know her for. Gone was the rich African vibe and nowhere were the lyrics that have you hanging on. Instead, there was a self professed and self important DIVA. We have a table at the stage in the orchestra and have seen many much bigger headliners arrive on time and give fantastic shows without having the plug pulled. I am no longer a fan of Badu whose music is now unrecognizable with the exception of some old Outkast songs she wasted what little time she performed on. Fans pay $600 a table at Chastain. I think that she should be embarrassed to have accepted fans money on a 30 minute open, an hour and a half of DJ mixes and her 40 minute spin on old 80’s and 90’s music with a couple of her new songs and none of her good ones fands knew her for. I emphasize “knew” as anyone who attended that concert should boycott her on principal. She doesn’t deserve or appreciate your loyalty. Chastain should keep her off the schedule going forward or include the noise ordinance fines in her contract so the fans with nothing better to do than wait 2 hours for her arrival will at least get their money’s worth.

Mz Badu would learn to check her Mickey Mouse if it started affecting her $$$. Knowing her rep, producers ought to write penalty clauses into her contracts. Oh, but wait. They don’t lose a dime — whether she performs 15 minutes or 50 minutes. Those running the show already have their $$$; Badu has her $$$. The only folks gettin’ shorted are the fans. You get what you pay for. Fans paid knowing they would be disrespected, and they got what they paid for.

I feel for the crowd at Chastain, but having seen her live the week before and basking in the genius that is, please believe sound or no sound Erykah is gonna keep making music and keep packing out shows…At our concert she braved the storm to still perform for us eventhough it was a lot of work for her stage and sound people to re-group. I guess the music will have to keep going on & on without those who were turned off…and yes the pun was intended!

I personally enjoyed the show and felt that I got my money’s worth; I can’t wait for the chance to see her in concert again. I think her whole show was dramatic and high energy and my only expectation that was unmet was another act between her own and her opener — she took the stage around 9:50 in other cities and ended around 11:20. The author of this article probably did not know how long her set was supposed to be or what time she was due to hit the stage, despite our expectations. Even with the mic being cut, I felt that I had seen pretty much the entire show. I would recommend to any fan of good music to get out to see her if your budget allows for it.

If I’m not mistaken, Badu and Staff were paid prior to performing…someone should check the “Earth Mother’s” rider – EVERYONE knows the Chastain Rules – it’s her managers responsibility to get the person who used to be humbled to play before five people at the Cotton Club to get her butt on stage on time. She herself has been a patron of Chastain on NUMEROUS occassions in years past – she knew the rules – she’s a DIVA now -
