The Eagles land in Piedmont Park in October

GC3-EaglesRanch_HPAre you ready for a tequila sunrise in Piedmont Park?

Live Nation and the Piedmont Park Conservancy confirmed today that the Eagles will be coming to Piedmont Park on Oct. 15. Rumors had been swirling that the perennially popular country-rock pioneers would be playing the park this fall, but nothing was official. Now it is.

This is the Conservancy’s third concert, with the Dave Matthews Band headlining in 2007 and Paul McCartney doing the honors last year. The concert is a benefit to “raise funds to maintain historic Piedmont Park and the new 53-acre expansion, while promoting environmental sustainability,” according to the organization’s website.

The Piedmont Park Conservancy has a special offer. If you sign up for their eNews, you  get a special code that allows you to purchase pre-sale tickets. The pre-sale tickets go on sale Saturday, July 31st at 10am through Ticketmaster.

Will you be lining up for tickets? And how about the prices: $55 ($250 for the VIP package). Is it worth it? Is it a good deal? Tickets go on sale to the general public on at 10 a.m. Aug. 7.

Oct. 15 falls on a Friday. Shouldn’t they make it on a Saturday to obviously minimize traffic? Or would that make too much sense?

I, for one, greatly enjoyed both the Paul McCartney show and the DMB concerts. Yes, it’s crowded, but no more crowded than any other outdoor concert (Bonnaroo is crowded). Yes, there’s traffic, but no more traffic than at any large concert/sporting event. And it raises money for the park, something that we can ALL enjoy whether you attend the concert or not. And I’d be going to this one as well if I wasn’t on my honeymoon during that time.

Martha – I am guessing the 250 is for the VIP section, which is fully catered and includes all the booze you can drink. Perfect for gluttons. The rest of us will do fine with our 55.

I just hope they do a better job with the port-a-pots than they did during Allmans and DMB or else it’s gonna be another great big game of “Let’s See How Many Times I Can Pee In The Bushes Without Getting Caught”.

This would be a great concert – 20 years ago. $250 for tickets to stand listening to 60-something rockers who need to be wheeled out on stage? Paul McCartney is from a different planet when it comes to comparing him to the Eagles. The guy is probably the greatest song writer ever and was one of the Beatles. The Eagles were a good band in the 70’s, but…

@ Poppy – best band ever? Huh? You’ve been taking too much of your product, bro. I can think of at least 10 bands better than the Eagles in each of the past 40 years. Yes, they have grown old together putting out music, but so have the Monkees.

It will be interesting what the attendance will be for this event. The DMB/Allman Brothers band sold out (55,000 tickets) in a few days with tickets at $55 per ticket. The Paul McCartney concert did not come close to a sell-out. He only sold 29,000 tickets at $97 per tickets. At least they moved the ticket prices back down to $55 and moved the date to ensure better weather. However, I think having this concert on a Friday will hurt attendance.

DMB and McCartney were off-the-chart GREAT SHOWS. But, you could not pay me to sit through the Eagles.

The Eagles are one of only band that I know of who can play a 3 hour 35 song concert that consists entirely of hits.

The Beatles and the Beachboys could do it in their day but they of course no longer perform, unless you count Mike Love performing with a bunch of 20 year olds as the Beachboys like they did at Turner Field.

They are a great band but I still miss Don Felder’s guitar in the band, even if the other band members don’t. He played the best slide guitar I ever heard.

Wish Tim Schmit would sing some Poco songs though.

Johnboy – the Eagles last had a hit when you were saying goodnight to everyone in your house and still living with your parents on Walton’s Mountain. I think “take it to the limit” was inspiring to the troops in World War I, but seriously, that was 1975. 1975: Gerald Ford was president, the last Japanese hold-out soldier surrendered on Indonesia, Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese, Jimmy Hofa disappears, the Superdome opens in New Orleans, Ali defeats Frasier in the Thrilla in Manilla, Saturday Night Live premeirs, and Fergie of the Black-eyed-Peas is BORN. Need I go on? The Eagles suck.

The port-a-potty’s were not a problem at McCartney. I didn’t have to wait in line at all. We had a limo drop us off and pick us up, so no hassles with the traffic either. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert except for the rain that went on for an hour. McCartney kept right on playing right thru the rain. His band was even better than the Beatles or Wings.

@ Capt Midnight. It was meant to be humorous, dude. The point is that being around for 40 years doesn’t make you on par with U2 or the Beatles. Yes, the Eagles are a great American band, but they had their hits in the 70s – four decades ago. Won’t draw a sell-out in Piedmont, sorry to say. Rolling Stone has them as #4 on American bands. Better: Pearl Jam, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Beach Boys, Doors, Grateful Dead, Ramones, Bruce Springsteen & E-Street Band, and even REM.

I would say the Eagles are on par with Fleetwood Mac or CCR. Both bands were around about as long as the Eagles (producing music, that is). I think KISS and Nirvana had about as many hits as the Eagles. At least The Ramones and Nirvana each started movements. Who have the Eagles influenced? Whatever. Point is, you will have 20,000 in the park, and that is lame.

I saw the Eagles at the first concert at Verizon theater in Alpharetta. It was a great concent that lasted for almost 3 hours with only a short intermission. They played many of the 70’s hits of Henley and Walsh as solo artists and even James Gang material (which I am sure if before many of you were born). I hope only 20,000 purchase tickets as it was quite crowded at DMB concert a few years ago. However, I think some of you are understating there popularity. Sure there is not the came novelty of the Hell Freezes Over reunion tour a few years ago, but I will be surprised if the crowd is not more comparable to DMB (don’t forget the Allman Brothers contributed to many of the DMB sold) than McCartney. Eagles are not necessarily even my favorite band, but at $55.00 they are well worth the price of admission.

Before you throw verbal bricks at Gay men who populate Midtown Atlanta, maybe you should thank them. Otherwise, you might be reading about this upcoming event. Gay men founded Midtown’s rebirth. In the early 80’s Midtown Atlanta was a dangerous and rundown pocket of Atlanta. Gay men lead the way to the gentrification of Midtown.

I no longer live in Midtown. However,I owned two homes for over a decade from the early 90’s. I paid city property taxes. I watched the area blossum. Remember…if was not for us…. Gay men…Midtown who were there first, Midtown might not have thrived. We lead the way.

However, to be fair events like this were part of the reason I sold my home and left Midtown. I lived on a street with direct access to the park. I recall during one such an event, I had a young lady stand in front of my home and refused to move her body, to allow me to park my vehicle in an open space. She was saving the space for another vehicle, despite the fact I moving my car toward the space. This was right in front of my home. Rather than run her over, I parked a few streets away. Later, I looked and saw the plates of the vehicle.. they read Cobb county.

Piedmont Park became a fair ground during such events and contributed to my departure.

However, I hope this goes well and the Eagles put on great show.

Yup – $250 is the vip section. It’s usually the parking lot next too the Tavern. It’s elevated and has catered food and drink. I went to the DMB and Paul McCartney shows – and I’d rather be in the crowd. The VIP has elevation – but it’s actually a bad angle and too far away.

I think the Eagles is a great choice. They’ve been playing for 20 years, and are still playing, so they should draw in a crowd of various ages. I’m glad to see the price go down to something a bit more affordable. Now, last year I heard you couldn’t bring in any food or drinks – not even water. If they do that this year, I’ll be disappointed. Way too many people to have to get through just to go get bottled water! And I agree, it should have been on a Saturday night. Friday night is bad for anyone not working in the city.

While I have purchased tickets for this event and look forward to seeing the Eagles, I believe the folks at the Conservatory should have done a better job forcing the ticketmaster monopoly to set lower fees. An event to raise money for such a great cause should not be burdened with fees that end up raising the total cost by 30%. As I said, I bought the tickets, as this is a good cause and will be a great concert, but alternate ticketing methods should be considered for future concerts.

It is very sad to read this blog on the web while just looking for information about the concert and venue. If you don’t like the band, you don’t need to spend your time and money, nor do you need to publish a negative opinion for people who do enjoy them or who have never been to this venue or seen this band live. The comments denigrating people for their age, tastes and lifestyles are inappropriate and sad. I guess most of the folks writing on this are young and so most of them won’t attend. Most of those attending an Eagles concert won’t go on this site and will be spared the ugliness of such diatribes. I am sad I found this as it was a sad commentary on Atlanta.
