Maxwell & Erykah Badu Entertain Philips Arena Crowd Friday

R&B star Maxwell entertained a female-dominated crowd at Philips Arena Friday night in the first of two shows at the downtown venue. Erykah Badu and comic Guy Torry warmed up the audience. We sent the AJC’s Robb Cohen to cover the event with his camera. Check out the 15-photo online concert gallery: Maxwell, Erykah Badu entertain Philips. Please tell us about what you saw at the show. How did it compare to other Maxwell concerts?”

Great concert! My voice is still recovering from screaming. I’m definitely getting Erykah’s new cd. Hearing her songs brought back memories of when music was new and refreshing. And as for Maxwell… let’s just say that Maxwell is the sexiest fully dressed performer I have ever seen. Men and women of all ages were rocking to the classics and his new songs. Can’t wait for blackSummer’snight to come out. I’m sure Jill will rock the house tonight. Hopefully she won’t have any technical difficulties like last night.

The Maxwell show was excellent, Badu went a little long, the ladies were sexy and fine. Best part? The smile on my girl’s face when I bought her a bag of those warm cinnamon almonds, My daughter is 12 and even when we went to Hawks games the almonds are her thing. That’s nuts!

The concert was awesome. Badu is a true artist and it shows in her stage presence and performance. I understand that Maxwell was the headliner, but is unfair to say that she “warmed” the crowd for Maxwell. Torry warmed the crowd, and he wasn’t very good at it!!!! Badu on the other hand gave the audience a concert of her own. Both artist seem very humble, especially Maxwell who thanked the fans repeatedly for his success. I am an even bigger fan now!!! Great show!!!!!

The show was not worth the $500 that we paid for it!

Erykah’s selection of songs was horrible. Never heard the songs before. Don’t want to hear them again.

Maxwell has become arrogant – for no good reason. It shows onstage. People who were seated in the front rows even left.

BK- It’s refreshing hearing something different for a change. I guess it’s a matter of interpretation, but Maxell seems to be a very humble dude. If displaying confidence is being arrogant then so be it.

Both had excellent bands, especially Maxwell’s featuring Robert Glasper who is an outstanding artist in his own right.

This has been by far one of my favorite concerts ever and I have experienced a lot. Yes, there was technical difficulties when Miss Badu did her intro but she did not have a fit (as sometimes we know some artist do) and start yelling and throwing down microphones she was a total lady. Miss Badu politely walked off stage and waited for the sound techs to get it together then she politely walked back on stage as if nothing happened and started again from the beginning. I have to say that I was a little worried when I received the tickets featuring Miss Badu and not Miss Scott but I have to say Miss Badu did her thing she was very entertaining and put on a great show. Maxwell what can I say WOW!!!! I am not in love with this man because of his appearance I am in love because he is truly a great artist and has not lost a thing after taking a ten year hiatus the man was hot then and the man is hot now. He had the audience fully engaged and on the edge of our seats singing along all night long. The only reason some people got up to leave in front was because of the obvious concerns with traffic after the concert adn there were celebrities seated in the front rows and they were given a heads up that he would be asking the audience to get out their seats and move up to the front stage by the end of the show. Maxwell is a very humble man and he is very thankful for the opportunity to perform again which he mentioned several times during the concert so I strongly disagree with the comments made above. Thank you Miss Badu and Mr. Maxwell for a great concert!!!

I have seen Maxwell and Erykah multiple times and have been awed by their showmanship and ability to move the crowd. However, this was not the best show for Erykah. Maxwell is always clean and classy, but if you missed his show in Memphis, you missed one hell-of-a show! Erykah was very disappointing. I have seen her throw down in Orlando and Memphis, but this show she seemed to be lacking her usual energy. This is the second time I have seen her and she did not do her popular songs. How can you not do the song that is currently playing on the radio? Although I knew the songs, my friends that went with me are not the same kind of fans and were not impressed (as much as I bragged). I know that artists often grow tired of performing the same thing over and over again, but out of respect for the grass root fans and new comers, it would seem you could honor them by giving them what they came for. Maxwell did.
