Heavy metal icons Metallica brought their World Magnetic Tour to a nearly full Philips Arena Sunday night, October 4, 2009. The openers included Lamb of God and Gojira. I want to get these photos online quickly, so sorry for the brief remarks.

They still continue to put on a great show. I think they played 18 songs overall, 6 new ones and the rest old ones. A good mix. I’ll be at the Vegas show in December as well, so I’ll see if they switch it up at all. My head is still ringing.

Kick ass show. They claimed they were trying to play the loudest concert ever at Philips Arena. I think they did. Maxwell and Kings of Leon play at Philips this week. I would be surprised if they put on 1/10 of the show James, Kirk, Lars, and Robert put on last night.

Great ‘tallica show as usual by the four horseman. Although I was on the front rail all day and night, see picture #6 above-me on right looking bored before the show started. The sound quality was lacking quite a bit-instruments sounded really good, but the vocals were almost non-exsistent! I have been to well over 70+ Metallica shows since 1986, and after waiting 4 years for the boys to be back in Atlanta, I honestly thought it would be better than it was. Still great, (better than 95% of the bands out there these days) but the sound could have and should have been much better. Maybe it sounded better in the seats, but I need to be down below, up front where the action is. Set List was real good, they never dissapoint with mixing it up with some old and new, but I thought that Blackend, Last Caress, and NIghtmare was one of the highlights. They rarely play Blackend anymore, and it rocked! Overall I give the show a B-

I am not a die hard Metallica fan nor am I a headbanger but I have wanted to see a show of theirs because I have always heard about how incredible the experience is. I have seen some great concerts, some of the best, and I am comfortable saying Metallica absolutely killed it. One of the best shows I have seen. We were 10 rows up on the lower level and the sound was incredible. If you haven’t seen Metallica put it at the top of your list. Awesome! The ATL crowd was great too!

Rocked my face off! Great mix of both old and new. Thankfully, no St. Anger. The sound was great from the seats, definately the loudest I have heard in Philips.

One of the best concerts that I have seen in a VERY long time. It is amazing that after all of these years they still put on a great show. I loved stage set up – it was great for those of us who were wayyyy up in the nose bleeds. I felt as though I was only a few rows back. This is a lesson to all acts who play arenas – rock the whole crowd or play smaller venues (Van Halen’s last show is an example of playing only to the first few rows and the rest of the crowd just kinda standing around bored)

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!!! I have seen Metallica several times since 1986 when they opened for Ozzy (Master of Puppets tour). I have now seen all three of their bassists and I have to say that Robert fits in there like a glove (miss you Cliff Burton)! I have been putting Biofreeze and heating pads on my severely whiplashed neck all day! That should tell you something!!! Looooooove Metallica!!!!!

Saw Metallica back @ The Omni back in the day, a few years ago at Gwinnett Arena and of course last night at Blueland…err Philips Arena. It really was an awesome show. You’d be there 24 hours or more if they played every single song you wanted them to play…but being on the floor is what it’s all about… got to see them come in and out, and being about 10 feet from your musical heroes is a very surreal and epic experience. It’s worth every penny to be on the floor. Last time at Gwinnett Arena, Lars was handing out his sticks and he gave one to the kid to the left of me, even though I had my hand right here… I was so bummed… but I came away with a guitar pick this time… awesome awesome experience and can’t wait to see them again. But man the boys are gettin old!

This was an awsome show. Great mix of old and new. These guys can still really bring it. The loudest show to ever play at Philips Arena, and well worth whatever ringing I still hear. Can’t wait to see them again soon!!!!

I got to see to see them from the company suite. The sound from the main floor of the suite wasn’t as good as the rail due to the facade block the path of the PA speakers. Still, it was a great show. I only wished they played a few more like Battery, Creeping Death, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Fade to Black

Took my middle schooler to the show as Metallica is his favorite band. I am veteran of some loud shows (e.g. Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult) during the early days at the Omni. Lars and the boys rank right up there with them. I sure am glad I relented and took my boy to the show. I have always enjoyed the music but wasn’t sure I could handle the scene.

Metallic are real pros and top notch performers. I think they are one of the last truly great rock acts. Kirk is GOD.

The show was awesome. I was on the floor and moved around a bit. I started out right in front of the stage but the sound wasn’t very good there. I later moved to one of the sides and back a little and it sounded great! Metallica really knows how to put on a show and please their fans. Can’t wait to see them again!

The show was great. First Metallica concert I’ve been to, but hopefully not the last. Enjoyed hearing the new stuff live, as well as the classics. Seemed like the crowd was really engaged and after all these years the boys can still thrash with the best of them. Favorite songs were Blackened and Master of Puppets

Ok check it I saw them play here and also the 2 shows in florida. I have seen them 15 times since ‘89, from coast to coast. Saw them twice in chicago last january. As far as this particular show the crowd energy was good but I agree with some of the comments on the sound. HOwever I don’t blame the band I blame the venue. For example both shows in florida sounded better because I think the acoustics at the FL arenas are better, first time I saw @ show @ Philips. How old is philps arena by the way? Anyhow blackened was awesome and the entire show was great! I skipped the opening acts (like I always do) and I could tell James voice was a little hoarse but man if you thought this show was great you should have seen them the night before in tampa. Incredible. CHeck you tube. ‘Tallica RULES!! I hope I can see them again next year, hope they keep touring or take a small break. If I have to wait 5 more years I will be “Madly in anger with the world” and that is sad but true.

by the way great website! I saw some other stories from the tour and other shows, but this site is great, love the photos, really above and beyond. More then I can say for most other sites or outlets with stories about the metal gods. Rob is a great fit and they have honed their skills and show from when I saw them earlier in the tour in chicago. Metallica ‘forever. I think if I ever have a kid his name will be “lars” hehe.

Yeah I read the other comments, alot of good ones. I agree though DD is either a kid being dumb or a fool who obviously did not go to the show. I must admit I am feel a little world weary for my age (mirror stares back hard) but I am glad I came up like I did because it gave me the chance to see Metallica several times. However even for the fans that it was just their first ‘tallica show -welcome to the family, or rather I should say welcome home (sanitarium) —- Just leave me alone! hehe

Hey St. Anger- I dont’ blame the band for the sound either, maybe the in the round stage set is the issue. because all of the gear is way up in the suites up on the second level mezzaine. usually with a front stage set-up the sound boards are 3/4 of the way back on the floor. Anyways still a great show anyway you cut it- not many bands at all can put on half the performance ‘tallica does. Phillps arena opened in late 2000 for the hockey season. The previous building was the terrible-sounding Omni which Metallica actually played the last event there in (I think) 1997 or ‘98, that was an amazing show–people were actually ripping the seats out and throwing them around it got so crazy in there that night (wish I had video of that to post)!! I hope they do come around again sooner, but most likely they won’t and it will be at least 3-5 years before we see them in the southeast again, time to pack the car up and make a road-trip. I followed them around the northeast back in the early ’90’s and it was an incredible experience! I have some amazing photos I took of the ATL show, send me your e-mail and I will send you a few of them. May the mighty metallica machine keep on rollin’-
