New CD pays tribute to Frankie Beverly & Maze

This is the album cover for the tribute CD.

The band Maze featuring Frankie Beverly hasn’t put out a new album since 1993’s “Back to Basics.” Yet the silky soul group tours year after year with fans flocking to sold-out shows (including annual visits to Atlanta’s Chastain Amphitheater) to hear decades-old hit songs.

Those same classics will draw Maze fans to this new tribute album, “Silky Soul.. A Tribute to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly,” which features major artists such as Mary J. Blige, Ledisi and Kem. While the digital version of the CD was released last month, the physical album finally hits stores today.

Musiq Soulchild kicks things off with a smooth as silk version of a song that it is actually a tribute Maze did in honor of the late Marvin Gaye, who was instrumental in the band’s success. Like many of the other tunes on this album, “Silky Soul” stays true to the Maze sound, but with an updated tempo.

In addition, Maze fans will enjoy Blige’s “Before I let Go, Ledisi’s “Happy Feeling,” Kem’s “Golden Time of Day,” Keveon Edmond’s “Never Let You Down,” Mint Condition’s “Back in Stride” and Joe’s “Can’t Get Over You.”

My personal favorites: Raheem Devaughn’s “We Are One,” and Avant’s “Joy & Pain.” Coincidentally, those are my favorite Maze tunes as well.

Like all of the previous posts, I am a big fan of Frankie Beverly & Maze. I must have seen them at least 20 times, in all types of settings, including the N.O. Jazz & Heritage Festival, Kings Dominion in VA, the Fabulous Fox Theater, and of course, Chastain. My first time seeing them was in the late 70s as a teenager, and the quality of the music and the tours has just gotten better with time. I am looking forward to adding this to my collection — Anthony should be proud of himself — the caliber of talent for this tribute is phenomenal!

I heard Joe doing Can’t Get Over You & It’s Sooooo good! Frankie Beverly said his son put this together to honor his father now & he’s the only one getting his kudos while he’s alive. He was on the Steve Harvey morning show & Frankie is so genuine and warm. There’s a reason people love him other than his great voice. By the way, Can’t Get Over You & We Are One are my favorites. Anytime a man takes full responsibility (I know I brought it on myself, I hold the blame and no one else) and notes that his woman has ruined him for all others, (What am I gonna do, I can’t get over you) it’s a great song!!!!!!!!!
We Are One just gives hope even in the midst of going through in a relationship (Our Love Will See Us Through).
Love Ya Frankie!

You can get the CD at Amazon and Itunes for sure.

The best rendition is by KEM. Simply because I think he put more of himself into the song versus trying to do “Maze”. It turned out great.
I really didn’t enjoy Mary J as much as I thought I would. She seemed to sound a bit lazy. I know some people won’t agree, simply because it’s Mary J. But really if you are doing a tribute to this great band, you have to bring your A game. No half stepping! If you really listen, you’ll understand what I saying.

I checked with the publicist, and the CD should be available at most music retail outlets, such as Target, WalMart, Best Buy, etc.

I was just able to get the CD, Best Buy was sold out last week when I tried to purchase it. The CD is AWESOME!!! I’ve been a fan since the late 70’s (uh oh, I’m telling my age!!!) To co-sign and re-iterate on what most of you have been commenting, Frankie B. & Maze certainly have not gotten the recognition they deserve, but God has blessed them in spite of the lack of accolades from the media, press, or the industry in general. We will continue to love and support them in the years to come. To Dion who commented that he expected more from Mary J. Blige, I do agree with you, she was a little dissapointing vocally. I do love her music and admire her greatly. I don’t like to compare artists because each is unique. However, I think Lalah Hathaway would have done a better job. Joe is awesome, Kevon is great!, I love KEM, Mint Condition is one of my favorite groups, Ledesi brought tears to my eyes. Overall, it’s a great project and I hope they do a video/BluRay live tribute to Frankie Beverly & Maze so I can watch it over & over.
Anthony, thank you for honoring your father with this project, and blessing our ears with this collaboration. Frankie, God Bless you and keep you, may you enjoy more success, happiness and health in the years to come. Maze, you’re an amazing band, God Bless!
