Blog Break: Those annoying co-workers

There’s a saying that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. There’s another group of people you can’t always choose: co-workers.

Most workers spend more time with co-workers than with their own families, and often times in closer quarters. Whenever people are grouped together in a cramped, cube-farm environment, minor problems are bound to happen.

It’s tough enough to get through a hard day of work without having to endure the annoying habits of the people you work with. Whether it’s clipping fingernails at their desk, making loud personal phone calls, whistling toneless tunes or microwaving smelly squid for lunch, everyone has pet peeves about co-workers.

Without naming names or companies, what are your most-annoying workplace pet peeves?

My old manager was annoying. He used to stuff the rosin bag with mutton and hard-boiled eggs. I’ll get you, Eddie Haas!

Is there a character limit on this reply box? Ha ha! I did work with a fingernail-clipper, whose nails must have grown at amazing rates, because the trimming seemed to occur daily. I know it probably couldn’t be helped, but there was one guy who used to belch (OFTEN) and then blow the “scented air” (not maliciously, but still annoying and unintentionally cruel) at the person in the cube next to him. Fortunately, I was at a cubicle on the other side! Other co-workers have marinated in their cologne or perfume, sung aloud, microwaved fish for lunch or burned popcorn regularly. But I’d take people with these annoying habits any day over the truly evil, back-stabbing, lying, whining and/or spoiled co-workers, though!

just when I think I’ve seen everything from loud arguments over the phone, to co-workers looking at porn on company time, and bad hygine something comes along and blows all of that away. Happened to walk by a co-workers cubicle, and noticed that they were sitting there filing their FEET!!! Gross!!!

The worst, BY FAR, is too much perfume/cologne. Actually, not even just too much but really any at all. It doesn’t belong in the workplace. There are only two people that should ever smell your perfume and that’s YOU and your lover. I could go on and on and on and on forever about workplace peeves.

This one is driving us all crazy: co-worker who talks endlessly about all of her medical woes, complaints, symptoms, insurance issues… you name it! And, she will frequently repeat herself, as she has forgotten who she has updated with the latest illness. She will appear at your office doorway with a work related problem, and after that is resolved, start in with more complaints about her most recent illness, doctors, medications, etc. Some of us have even started closing our office doors to try and dissuade her from stopping! She also doesn’t stop the complaining at her medical issues. She regularly complains about most things, bosses, other co-workers, etc.
What can we do about this person? None of her illnesses are life threatening, and she has been with the company for over 25 years. She is also the worst gossiper in the office. UGGGGHHHH!!!

Where do I start…I have a co-worker who has a serious year-round nasal/allergy/coughing/squeezing/sniffing problem. On a daily basis we have to endure this disgusting serenade that this person creates. And I’m not thrilled that spring has come because it’s 10X worse! Then there is a girl who regularly files her apparently rough nails because it sounds like she’s sawing them as opposed to filing them. Then, there is a lady who has a disgusting cough – and we all have to endure that every morning. I’m getting annoyed just recalling all of this. And there is a lot more to share but I truly have to block them out of my mind for the sake of my peace of mind.

I’ve been unemployed since January. I miss all those irritating co-workers. All I can say is don’t sweat the small stuff, the alternative can be a lot more consuming than day to day with people too close.

Examples of annoying co-worker? When managers are too lazy to lead and select certain co-workers to be surrogate managers. They claim these individuals are a part of succession planning and you should be careful the way you treat them. Now, these individuals HAVE been promoted and they causing problems for the managers who help them get ahead! Go figure!

Help, I'm in a cubicle!

I have a co-worker who listens to everyone’s phone conversation. When I hang up, she comments on what I was talking about. And the funny thing about this situation is that I’m not a loud talker. She has this keen sense of hearing. Other co-workers in cubicles either behind her or on the next row have made the same comments about her listening on their conversations.

One day, I decided to play a trick on my adorable co-worker. I played like I was on the phone receiving some juicy gossip. Later that day, someone in another department asked me about it.

My coworkers annoy me by turning off the light in my bosses office when he is not in there to “save electricity”. I keep turning it on because they are in another department and they should stay out of his office. They have turned it off as many as 5 times in an hour! The florescent bulbs cost more to turn on and off than any cost savings they think are saving from flipping them on and off in their offices all day anyway. They are anal about posting signs all over the office in capital letters like: “if you jam the copier you need to unjam it before leaving.” “If you take the last bottle of water you need to refill the refrigerator.” “Do not move the thermostat.” Even, “Ladies Bathroom” on the 3 bathrooms and only women are in the building.

What about the office human intercom? You can hear every conversation both in person and over the phone from 50 cubicles away.

OK…1)Management showing favoritism. 2)Working with the slowest person in the office. For her to have a BA & claim 2 have exp in management, my 10 yr old neice can do her job. 3) Then u have the loud abnoxious assistant who’s been/seen and survive thru everything and try to be the boss just because shes been there for years. I mean I work with the most childest, pouting staff ever….But n all, I am bless to still be employed. :)
