Working Strategies: Unemployment checks can hamper motivation

Many Americans will soon run out of unemployment benefits. Perhaps the federal or state governments will make yet another extension, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I think that’s for the best. I should be hunching my shoulders to protect against an angry response when I write such things, but there it is: I’m not a fan of extensions to unemployment.

In my experience, projects take the amount of time we allot them. When someone no less influential than the government implies a proscribed length to that project by providing a standard 26 weeks of benefits, that timeline becomes the de facto standard for job search itself. I can’t begin to count the times over the years when I’ve heard newly laid-off workers proclaim, “I’ve got six months to find a job before my unemployment runs out.”

I should believe they’re thinking differently when the unemployment is set to last eight months or a year? No. If we’re able to scrape by, we’re likely to be less motivated than if we can’t make ends meet.

I don’t think most people are intentionally gaming the system. But I also don’t think we’re going to have a state of emergency on our hands when those benefits start to peter out. People will do what they’ve always done, which is to make things work somehow.

Ask yourself what all the discouraged workers are doing. Those are the unemployed people who no longer receive benefits and so are not counted into the official statistics. Some are using food shelves and social services, but more have simply hunkered down with a series of part-time and cash jobs, waiting for things to turn around.

When your benefits run out, the problem won’t just be unemployment; it will be cash flow. Focus your attention on earning more or spending less to keep the budget balanced.

What if the budget is already in the tank? Then it’s time for something more drastic, such as relocating or selling assets. I have friends who moved to an efficiency apartment and rented out their house for a gain of several hundred dollars a month. Someone else I met sold everything to live and work on a boat.

I’m not telling you to do those things. I’m telling you to do something. Waiting for an extension to unemployment is not an action plan.

Very good article. It is true that waiting around for an extension for unemployment is not only self stifiling but it’s just unrealistic. It’s simply basing one’s hopes on a unreliable variable.

Your opinion is true for some but not the majority. There are a lot of us that are applying for jobs, attending job fairs, working temporary and part time jobs, applying for financial assistance to upgrade skills, taking advantage of training seminars and living on the internet applying through different job websites to no avail. The percentage of people that think like that is very low compared to people who have always worked for what they want and have in their lives. This is a desparate time for a lot of people who are doing everything possible to survive.

Whats wrong with stating “I have 6 months to find a job before my unemployment runs out” Hmmm 26 weeks (6 months)…is there a point there?
In Good economic times 26 weeks is more then enough time to find a job, I agree, but these are the worst economic times that I have ever seen in my life time.
I just graduated from college after 2 years, I lived in GA for 11 years now, and My neigbhor who delivers this AJC paper is barely hanging on to his little route.
And there not even hiring…Your entitled to your opinion, but most of these jobs around the country, are gone for good!!
Thats what you should be reproting on….How can you spend less when you have no cash flow, and people don’t want to part with $10 dollars to clean there windows?
Yeah this is the real world! and your out of touch!

Im in the same boat as the 10.1 percent of Georgians that are unemployed and have run out on my third extension now and hoping for either the phone to ring with a job or the fourth extension to be passed into law. I totally disagree with this blog because the majority of us have been frantically looking for work since day one of receiving benefits because we all knew there would come a day when the benefits would end and you need to keep the cash coming in to live. Its all about survival for everyone. Most of us, well i can only speak for myself, but Im not the lazy type and would rather be working. Especially considering that the checks were nothing but a percentage of what I and over half of the people benefiting were making from our actual jobs. So we are force to make it work. People have mortgages, children to feed, bills to pay and these are things that are a must not an option to take care of. Its still no jobs out here anywhere trust me I apply seven days a week and nothing has happen and its been a year and a half for me. Like I said its about survival for us so we are counting on that extension.
