Go ahead. Say “I told you so.” Two games is a small sample, but second year man Jeff Teague may finally have seen his ship come in. With the trade of Mike Bibby to the Washington Wizards, along with the arrival of veteran point guard Kirk Hinrich, many of us wondered if Jeff Teague’s “role” with the Hawks was going to change or not. So far, it has, and in semi-dramatic fashion.
Here Comes “The Pest”
It was kind of hard sometimes, watching Jeff Teague play in spurts in the early season. He would come onto the court and show that he had another gear beyond everyone else in some games. In others, he played like he knew he would be yanked within two minutes. Where was the consistency? At the same time, the same could be asked of Head Coach Larry Drew, who would compliment Teague after a good game, then inexplicably assign him a DNP or play him in spare, all but useless minutes. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before….
It seemed that Larry Drew had embraced the idea of going with shooting and offense first, rather than speed and harassing defense. Speaking of which, last night’s game against a talented Golden State backcourt was a pretty good testament to how bothersome Teague can be to opposing point guards. It’s not like hasn’t shown flashes of this ability before, but the starting role and extended minutes (he played over 25 this time) were a confirmation of sorts. In case you think this is just a case of home cooking with local media, you need to check out some particular notes on the game from a more national perspective. On a side note, I would encourage everybody to take note of some interesting comments from Al Horford within that same article.
The Chicken vs The Egg…and Promises, Promises
Before we get too excited about the early success of Jeff Teague’s new (and possibly temporary) role, we have to recall that it has only been two games, one of which was a loss (though that loss can’t be blamed on Teague, per se). Can we expect a consistent performance out of him from the defensive end, and to continue to push the pace on offense? Will he defer if he’s in the game with Jamal, or is that simply a lineup issue that is solely Larry Drew’s responsibility? Is the future rotation at point guard forming itself before our very eyes, or is this just another flash in the pan?
Obviously, this calls Larry Drew’s past decisions into question. One quote from the above link may be condemning in some ways, depending on interpretation:
QUOTABLE II: “I’m not concerned about whether he makes or misses shots. . . . The biggest threat [from] him is when he utilizes his speed and his quickness, and when he harasses people defensively. That’s two straight games where I’ve thought he’s done a really good job with his energy.”
– Larry Drew on Teague.
Okay, that’s also two straight games where Teague has had the opportunity to prove that he can do these things that Drew claims he wants, during times in the game when it will actually matter. Did Drew have reason to believe Teague could not do this before? Was the playing time he gave Teague adequate to prove the argument in either direction? Some feel that Larry Drew would have never given Jeff Teague this chance if the trade had not occurred. Drew says he doesn’t care about Teague hitting shots. Something doesn’t seem right here, but is that even important now?
Here is the last and most obvious set of questions – will Larry Drew continue to give Jeff Teague significant minutes during games (as in 20 mpg or more)? Will he revert to using Jamal in tandem with Kirk Hinrich if Teague has rough games?
That remains to be seen, but for now, it seems like Teague’s time may have finally come.

Marvin spent most of his night defending Chandler and Afflalo 20 feet from the basket, that is one of the reasons he didn’t get many rebounds. His offensive problem was pretty consistent with most of his teammates, he got jumper happy. He had a nice hard drive or two in the first half but then settled for the rest of the night. Joe was the only one who seemed to consciously want to get in the paint, and even he started to settle in the last few possessions. (Josh acted like there was a fungus in the paint during the first half). Last road game of a long road trip that included some emotional anxiety when a good friend was sent away (not to mention missing 2 of their top 5 players when Josh went down in the 2nd half). I expect them to bounce back Wednesday after geting some well-deserved rest.

Teague is 4-19 in the last 3 games after the trade. I’m pretty sure that is less than 25%. Yeah, I guess you must need real game time to work on shooting because obviously his shot wasn’t getting better during practice. I like the defense he has brought but we can’t expect the team to win too many games when so many of the rotation players are offensively challenged. And there is nothing about shooting 25% that screams “play him more minutes”.

My bad, the trade happened before the Phoenix game… so Teague is shooting 28% since the trade (7/25). I change my mind, go ahead and play him 20-24 minutes each and every game.

Astro,
Just check:

The team was scoring and doing fine without Jamal.
Teague out Jamal in, and the lead in the first quarter dropped immediately.
Then, with Jamal in for the second quarter, it was a roller coaster which ended with us up by a nick.
After that, in the third, when Jamal came in, we were on the rise.
Jamal came in to close the third and play the whole 4th and we went under.
Don’t give me that cr*p that LD HAD to play Jamal. Yes, he could have played, but in short spurts.

vava, there are no absolutes and there are times when LD has limited options due to injury and match-ups. Again, I’m not saying that I would play Jamal extensive minutes in every game (my opinion on Jamal is well documented including before he put on a Hawks uniform), but last night he needed to be out there.

As streaky as Jamal is, I think LD leans on him too much.
But I agree about Teague. Since his jumper is so bad, he needs to make his floaters more consistently. If he can improve his FG%, I think LD will give him more minutes when other options are struggling.
Our bench is still very inconsistent though, so even with a new CBA, I think Rick should focus on improving our overall bench depth, instead of resigning Jamal.

Jamal’s negative plus minus stat come MOSTLY whilst playing with the starters and MOSTLY during late 3rd and the 4th quarters.
Look at popcornmachine to see with whom he usually is late in games when his ± get horrible.
And try and do it also on previous games. It’s very instructive.
PS: on Karl, I never said he was a bad coach, just overrated since many think of him – in particular now that he is ill and hearts mellow on account of that – as a great coach, which he ISN’T.

You are an idiot, an know nothing about basketball. Keep looking at your stupid stats, and +/- crap. The bottom line is Jamal can hit a shot, and is not scared to take the shot, and Marvin can’t, and passes the ball like a hot potato instead of taking and making a wide open shots. All those stats and popcorn machine crap, does not show you that. One guy is scared, the other guy is not. Marvin’s defense does not make up for the fact that he is a total offensive liability when he is on the floor, and Jamal’s offense makes up for the fact that he is a defensive liability. It’s that simple. Don’t blame Jamal, blame the ASG. LD would be stupid to leave Marvin on the floor, when he knows that he will either miss a wide open jump shot, trip on his way to the hoop, or get his shot blocked by a 6′1 guard. Teague can’t be on the floor for Jamal either because he can’t score. The team is flawed, bottom line.

no vava, i dont think folks are sympathetic at all about what karl does and has done well his career, not me anyway and others that watch him coach a game that i have talked with. he does coach; some decisions work, some dont, and in him, by his record, more work than not. he has managed melo and albatross iverson and gotten the most out of them, won with them, now he has a young team and seemed quite fired up to the challenge if you took the time to listen to the clip on him i provided the night of the trade. since you feel he maybe only a sympathetic character you might have not watched.
no, just so you dont think it is man love, i dont think he is a pleasant man at all nor sympathetic or wants yours or anyone else’s but he is a hell of a coach if not great. wish he were here instead of woody and LD. he makes chicken salad out of chicken poop well as they dont spend with the big boys but he gets a lot out of his bench. pleasant/likable doesnt win games. doubt dr phil is too pleasant either and maybe just a bit condescending but it works. however, karl is very thoughtful on his illness and his role as a coach from what i have listened to.

Never got past the first round of the playoffs, but that was not his fault.” (not an exact quote, just a summary of your huuuuge basketball knowledge)
Yep, you know basketball!!! Points and money! Yeah!
For your information, my analysis on Jamal goes waaaaay beyond simple stats, boxscores, popcornmachine, etc.
Jamal is such a clear case of offense is not enough to overcome his defensive inability that it becomes evident even on partial stats.
There is a reason why Jamal never played a playoff game until he came to ATL.
I bet that during your “playing career” you were also about individual stats, dunks, macho man bravado and all that earns money but not wins.

I only heard last nights game, but it seemed like the HAWKS really missed Josh’s presents in the paint during the 2nd half. I think Jeff’s going to take sometime to get use to the speed of the game. Even though he didn’t shoot the ball great last night he did get to the line. If he keeps attacking his defender he’ll be fine. It will be really good to see him on the court the next 6 games, all quality opponents, which will force him to improve his game. It also will be a great opportunity to work Hinich into the mix. It’s going to be a really tough stretch but I look at it like Playoff basketball!

News from around the league;
From ESPN.com;
Highly coveted free agent Troy Murphy is signing with the Boston Celtics..
That comesas no surprise, because Murphy wants to win a ring.
The Oklahoma City Thunder signed center Kendrick Perkins to a multiyear contract extension Tuesday, the team announced.
Terms of Perkins’ contract with the Thunder weren’t disclosed. The Celtics had reportedly offered him a four-year, $22 million contract. Perkins was reportedly seeking a deal worth $30 million over that same span..
That is a big surprise to me. I thought OKC would want to wait until he has played a few games for them to see how healthy he is, to see how he fits, and to see what the new CBA says.

nire,
I think Teague will get there. The difference between shooting well and not is minimal in his case. His mechanics are ugly but within its ugliness, consistent in form and with the potential to generate hits (as opposed to guys whose shot mechanics are erratic (like Josh – although improving now) or when consistent but really bad (guys who shoot flat).
A simple example: against the Blazers his shots were not all bad:
His 3 point attempt was almost in. Not a terrible miss.
His botched lay up which Josh dunked was not that bad (as neither was the layup Al dunked in PHO).
The shot in the first half to the top of the glass against the Blazers was horrible and a clear sign that he was afraid of Camby.
Against GS Teague missed two three pointers, but one was an half court hail-mary and the other was perfectly in line but short.
I think Teague’s issues are mostly due to lack of experience and being too afraid to take the shots. He does not look loose.
Since he was fearless – or at least he looked fearless – in college, there is a pretty decent margin for us to believe that he will improve once his confidence goes up.
Also, even though his shot is off, he gets to the line – where he is very solid – and that is better than just hitting shots and not getting any fouls on the opposing players.

Risky move by OKC but probably they wanted to keep him 100% happy from inception.

According to Hoopdata, Teague is shooting around 50% from the rim. As a comparison, Bibby and his quarter-inch vertical is around 65%. So Teague’s lack of a jumper is only exasperated by his inability to convert more than half of his shots at point-blank range. No, it doesn’t mean that he should go out with the next load of trash but it does mean that he has a lot of work to do before he earns all of these minutes that some seem to believe he deserves (for no apparent reason other than he holds a roster spot on an NBA team). Jamal will be getting plenty of PG minutes for the remainder of the season.

You are correct, he was not on a playoff TEAM. Notice the word TEAM. It’s funny how you continue to trash players individually like basketball is not a team game.
“I bet that during your “playing career” you were also about individual stats, dunks, macho man bravado and all that earns money but not wins.”
Please don’t make that bet.
“I also note that you mention Marvin, yet again, when I did not. Talk about fixation.”
For good reason, he’s the bum, not Jamal. If you don’t want Jamal in the game at the end of the game, then who would be the first guy off the bench to replace him. I would think that would be Marvin.
Is Kevin Love a loser also? He’s never won or gotten his team to the playoffs either.

Astro,
Teague gets consistently on the FT line with his drives. That alone alters that stat’s real value.
Bibby was going down – fast – Teague may go up.
For a team which was dead in the water, to stay put did not make any sense, regardless of any stats you may present.
Bibby actually stated the year quite well, but he is clearly no longer able to contribute during a 82+ games season more than 15-20 minutes per.
That was perfectly evident as is Jamal’s inefficiency in a role which does not suit him at all.

Rod,
You continue to dig holes which go deeper and deeper.
Jamal is not highly regarded in the league – certainly not as a starter – hence he was traded many times and not in exchange for any type of powerhouse players.
Heck, we signed him for AC Law and Speedy’s expiring contract.
Jamal is talented individually but he one plays one way basketball (offense) AND even there he plays mostly on his own.
Is he gifted and talent? Heck yes, but its a team’s sport and Jamal does not play “organized team basketball”.
Maybe his lack of college experience robbed him from improving his team fundamentals but the fact is that Jamal is what he is: a great individual talent which is disruptive and cannot warrant in a team with aspirations more than 20 minutes of day light.
Marvin is a huge disappointment, uncoordinated, poor fundamentals, … whatever, whoever you can count on him being disciplined on D and that wins more games than reckless “on-off” offense with ZERO defense.
On Kevin Love:
Love has been on the league for 3 years and I am sure that he is deemed untradeable by Minny and will get a maximum extension.
Jamal got to the playoffs only on his 10th year.
Also, Love is a huge defensive liability: no lateral movement. Nonetheless, he is a much more accomplished team basketball player than Jamal will ever be.
The fact that he loves rebounding and is averaging 15.5 without very good physical tools is incredible. I wish Smoove looked at him as an example to follow instead of being a poor man’s Rasheed (namely, the older Rasheed without his early career low post moves).

vava, as I have said ad nauseum, the PG issue was a Sund problem not an LD problem. Hinrich is the answer, not Teague (and not Jamal). We currently (IMO) have a back-up PG problem but I can see how using Jamal and Teague based on the situation will have to suffice until the summer. The notion that Teague is the exclusive answer at back-up PG is every bit as flawed (likely moreso) than thinking Jamal should exclusively hold down the position.

Astro,
Wrong. Jamal is not a playmaker, does not defend and cannot improve on either front after 10 years in the league.
He is what he is, shoot first, shoot second and shoot third kind of player.
Look at what happened when Jamal played PG to close games. Low scoring quarters, jump shots and more jump shots.
The conclusion that Jamal on the floor produces more points for the Hawks or points enough to overcome his lack of D is completely wrong and you have witnessed this many many many times.
I have no quarrel nor any agenda against Jamal, I simply see that he is being overused by a mile.
20 mpg on average tops and I am already conceding. That would be enough for him to produce 10/12ppg easily without hurting us.

18 for Jamal subbing JJ is more than enough for me. absolutely no PG play for him.
Also, his 18 minutes should come partly with Hinrich on the floor.
Hence, whenever it was necessary to bring Jamal in early, JJ would move to the SF slot.
When I played Teague at the point, I would look to split his 16 minutes of day light with Jamal and JJ along side him simply because I trust JJ to give Teague the necessary defensive pointers to keep him working well on D and on offense I think JJ can be much more team oriented than Jamal.

Yeah. I remember a bunch of games that Marvin helped is win in the 4th quarter by defending the other teams best player (LOL). I don’t ever remember Jamal helping us win any games because of his scoring ability in the 4th quarter (LOL). Today must be opposite day.
“A very good one: Al Harrington. That guy is ultra talented but again he is not a team player and his talent did not produce wins for his teams.”
I don’t need you to give me examples of players like Jamal, I’ve already given you the perfect example, Vinnie Johnson. He win a championship by the way. Both their jobs are to come off the bench and score. You continue to say all these bad thing about Jamal, but can’t understand that his last two coaches continue to play him extended minutes because he is doing his job, which is to shoot. Don’t you think that if he was doing something that he was not supposed to be doing, both coaches would take him out of the game. Drew nor Woodson, had no loyalty to Jamal Crawford “the loser” as you say. If he misses shots, that’s one thing, but his job is to do exactly what you criticize him for doing.
“Also, Love is a huge defensive liability: no lateral movement. Nonetheless, he is a much more accomplished team basketball player than Jamal will ever be.
OK. (LOL)

Why should Smoove look to Kevin Love as an example to follow. Two totally different players. Body types are not the same. Love is easily 20 pounds heavier than Smoove. He is a great rebounder, but Josh is a great shot blocker and defender. Josh has as many strengths as Love has, and he has been in the League much longer. The question is, Is Love a loser? Or another question is, was KG a loser when he played for the Timberwolves? They never won anything either. Since TMac and Jamal are losers in your book because they never won anything, why would Love and Garnett (Minn), or Ray Allen(he is terrible defensively also) in Seattle not be losers?

Melvin, I try to offer a balance for all of the Josh and Teague lovers out there. I provide a service to the blog, someone who tries to keep band-wagon jumpers from losing all perspective in their quest to join the herd.
I like Marvin but I understand the criticism. I don’t like Jamal (my Flip The Sequel campaign starts in June)but I understand his value. I liked Bibby but I understood the criticism (accept folk wanting him to have different physical attributes). But I could never link Bibby’s poor play to Teague. If Josh Smith stinks up the place for the next 15 games, I promise I won’t lead any rallies rto see more of Josh Powell or Hilton Armstrong. I don’t see any linkage between a player’s failure and another player’s opportunity. Sometimes when you’re hand stinks, playing a lesser card doesn’t make things better, in fact, it just makes it worse. Speaking of which, I HATED the LD hire but I understand that his hand of cards is slightly above average and I try to remember that if you have poor PG cards (as an example) there is little reason to blame the card player. He can only re-order his hand so much before he is faced with either playing a defensive liability, a chucker who can sometimes imitate a combo guard (when really he is a pure chucker) or a guy who struggles to shoot 30% from the field. Neither option was a winning hand.
