I don't think that there's a good parallel for Josh's skill set in the annals of NBA history:

Carmelo/LeBron: Really, other than having similar physical attributes (height/build/athleticism), there isn't much similarity between their games. Simply put, Josh is better than either close to the basket, but both are significantly better than Josh out on the perimeter.

Rodman: Josh is more athletic (although Rodman's athleticism was underrated), a slightly better help defender, and a significantly bigger threat on offense. But he lacks Rodman's "nose for the ball" on rebounding. Not that that's a knock on Josh - Rodman was the most skilled rebounder in the history of the game. Rodman was also a better on-ball defender than Josh, both on the perimeter (where again he was underrated as a defender) and in the post.

In any case, I don't see Josh as comparable to any of those three. I can't think of a parallel. But the uniqueness of his skill set that makes him such a dynamic player. I don't know of any other 6'8 guy in the history of the league that was a threat to grab 15 boards and get 5 blocks on any given night. His presence on the court is a complete game-changer defensively and on the glass as long as he's put on the floor with a decent center. When that happens, there's basically no chance of the opposing team getting easy points in the paint.

This all illustrates why I get so frustrated with our switching defense. Josh has, in my view, surpassed Camby and Garnett as the best help defender in the league. Why the HELL do we employ a defense that puts him out on the perimeter????? Can you imagine any coach employing a switching defense that brought Camby or Duncan away from the basket? So why the hell does Woody do it with Josh on the floor?

Josh Smith Leads the League in And-1 Percentage
If I'm reading that right, the league averages three And-1s for every 100 field goal attempts. Josh Smith, year-to-date, gets an And-1 every 9 field goal attempts.

Josh leads the league in blocks.
youngest player to get to 900 blocks.
Josh and the team lead the league in most points in the paint.
Josh PER of 25.24 which is good for tenth in the league
Atlanta #! in rankings.
Josh 17th in total rebounds
7th in FG%
I could be wrong but I think the kid is on his game.

doc - your comments about stern and the refs may be overcome by Josh. He is arguable the most exciting player in the NBA. It's not so much what he does but how he does it. When we add his talent to a winning record the masses will watch and be amazed. If Josh continues to play great against the top teams on TV he can transcend politics.
If he can become an automatic double double, he is flashier than any.

A Rodman on steroids? A Caramelo with 6" more vertical leap? The day he blocks an Lebron drive and dunks on the other end - he will be immortal. Even if the Hawks fans don't show up, the nation will tune in.

When the refs give him a couple extra fouls or calls we will see him become even more aggressive. If that is possible. And you know what? Good for Josh and good for the game. A superstar in the making.

lacsho,

What I'm liking is the willingness to get the bigs involved in the offense. I've been calling for that for the last two years. I'm also loving the defensive intensity we're showing, though I still think we could defend much better. Better man up tonight. I'm sure the Heat still hold a grudge for the First Round.

I think Marvin hasn't found his role yet in the starting line-up. (accept for defensively) He's use to be the other guy to dump the ball into when it wasn't JJ's turn, but that has changed since Smoove and Horford own the middle. I think he has to take on the role of slasher. JJ is the scorer and Bibby is the shooter, so Marvin needs to be the 'slash and finish' or 'slash and dish' guy. If he takes on that mind set it should cut down on a lot of his indecision when he gets the ball. He's also the 3rd shooter, so he needs always be ready to catch and shoot. Basically if he gets the ball on a kick-out, he can't hesitate, he has to shoot. If he gets the ball during the flow of the offensive, he needs to immediately slash and look to finish. Overall, I think Marvin will be fine.
