“Remember, Woody always sounds good this time of year,” longtime Hawks fan MannyT remarked to me once, in a response to an admittedly overly exuberant blog post by yours truly.
All too true. I’d been a bit too excited over some of the things Hawks head coach Mike Woodson had been saying (hey, in my weak defense, they were things we hadn’t heard from him the whole time he’s been here), when my fellow Hawkster brought me back to earth. Was I guilty of being overly bouyant? Probably.
Let’s review a bit. We’ve heard that we’re going to run more. Put simply, it didn’t happen. Oh sure, we tried it for a couple of games. Then things got a bit shaky, and right back to walk-it-up offense we went. Again, it’s a debate. Were the Hawks not running because they simply weren’t ready, or were they not ready because they didn’t push through the inevitable misfires that come when a team begins to consistently run a fast break for the first time?
How about the edict that we must find ways to get Joe open? Uh, I don’t know about you, but I still haven’t seen that one. You’d think somebody besides Mike Bibby and Al Horford knew how to set actual solid screens. And I’m not picking on the rest of the team, either. It’s design. The Hawks just don’t effectively use something so fundamental as a screen nearly as often as they should. We ran the pick and roll alright, but I swear that half the time, there wasn’t much of a “pick.” Besides, the pick and roll is not the only time you should set a screen.
Case in point: Why should Joe Johnson be seeing so many double teams? Set a screen on one of those guys, and suddenly he’s one-on-one. Now “Iso Joe” makes sense, no? Seriously, how many guys do you know that can hang with Joe one-on-one all game? Not many, and those that can do it for a time are probably only doing so in confidence because they know that help defender is coming, regardless of whether or not they’re already in trouble. Some people swear it’s the Hawks players that are at fault. Even if that were true, if I were Mike Woodson, I’d be running screen drills all day in practice until it became second nature for the players.
So what’s the latest from Woodson? He wants to get more scoring out of Horford, Williams, and Pachulia. Huh….
Seems to me that Marvin was already set for that early last season. The injury he suffered came late in the season, so in my opinion, that’s not a good alibi. Why wasn’t he featured more, earlier? Two games of the season, he went ballistic on offense only because a key starter was missing. Let me rephrase that. He went ballistic as a featured option on offense…only because a key starter was missing. The debate on Marvin overall still rages, but how much is there to the chick-vs-egg argument? Some contend that Marvin doesn’t get the ball because he’s not aggressive enough. Others say that he doesn’t produce more because he doesn’t get the ball. Yet here we have not just Woodson, but team leader Joe Johnson insisting that not only can Marvin score more, but that they need him to be featured more. If this Detroit model is going to work, Marvin’s game has to come up a notch or two. Whether that depends more on Marvin to get it done, or Woodson to get him involved still remains to be seen.
Then there is center Al Horford, who has been about as close to a double double as you can get without rounding the numbers up. The knock on Horford usually starts with his size. Getting past that, there are many who are quick to say that he doesn’t have much of a solid offensive game. And just like Marvin, Al has shown last season that he can produce when featured. How often was that? To put it into perspective, Horford took an average of 8.8 shots per game, good for 6th most on the team. The good news for Woodson is that his apparent stated goal is hardly a challenge. He wants 12 or 13 points per game from Al, according to this article http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Aj_Kj71pP3XtC3L6u3lENq5FT74F?slug=teamreports-2009-nba-atl&prov=sportsxchange&type=team_report.
Considering that Horford averaged 11.5 points last year, I’m not overly impressed with the set goal. I think 14 or 15 per game is more to the tune of what we need. Either way, adding in Zaza for 8-10 ppg is going to be interesting. Do you up his minutes, draw up more plays for him, or what?
Truthfully, such goals require a totally different concept of offense, one that Hawks fans certainly haven’t seen yet. Is this the year that what comes out of Woodson’s mouth in the summer/training camp/preseason actually comes to fruition on the court? In the past, there was room for excuses. Guys weren’t ready. Injuries occurred. Last season especially, Woodson was able to fall back on the fact that despite not following through on what he initially said would be done, the Hawks were still more successful than many expected. He maintained that though people may not like how it was done, the got the job done. This season, the Hawks may not meet with achievable success without following through with what Woodson says they must do.
The way I see it, Marvin and Al are two guys who have and always will do what is asked of them. Pachulia has warmed quite well to his role, as was evidenced last season.
It’s always on the players to produce and execute. But Woodson has to make sure the delivery is made. So what do you think? Will the offensive design change and evolve as it needs to? Will Woodson fade back to his old habits the first time the Hawks encounter a losing streak, or ride the tough times out? What has to be done to involve the frontcourt more, and will that come to pass finally?

NBA League Pass choice is $85 this year – you get to watch all the games of 7 teams of your choosing. My “definite” picks are the Hawks, Blazers, Spurs, and Jazz. I haven’t decided my other picks yet. I don’t wanna do the Big Three since 1/3 of their games are nationally televised anyway. Any suggestions?

I am more curious than anxious about HOW Woody will save his job this year.
Manny T, we all are, and that I contend, is a big problem. With the usual peaks and valleys most NBA teams go through during the long season, it seems to me that the situation with Coach Woodson will go from one many now see as of motivation, to one that reeks of desperation.
At that point past promises will mean nada as la futura will come to mean “my survival” to the coach and we will see if desperation is, if not the mother of invention, at least it’s cousin.
I’m really surprised that no one has started the official “Woody Clock” as of yet. Is it because it is still preason, or maybe because down deep, even some of his harshest critics suspect that the things Ray talked about just might be implemented after all?
Go Hawks!!

kirk,
Good stuff. But I personally think that the team will rally behind Woody this year.
I believe that his lack of contract will be a non-story. Unless of course they start out 8-12 or something. But that ain’t happening.
nire,
I’d pick the Bulls just to see Rose. Kid is WELL worth the price of admission.
Also Memphis and Minnesota will be fun to watch as they develop.

G-Money ,
There is a difference between “blame Woody” and “Woody is head coach, therefore responsible for a number of things”. Know what I mean?

here is the kiss of death to woody. i am more confident of what he brings to the mix than i have ever been before almost think he could get these guys to the big dance as they continue to build on past success and have had plenty of ops to shove him to the side of the road and quit on him.
there samuel are you happy now? no bs either as you have seen by my comments i know how he is to be held accountable but he will deliver and get a new four year contract and certainly a three year one.

League Pass Broadband is the all-online version of League Pass. For regular League Pass, you pay $150 for the season and can watch all NBA games that aren’t being televised in your area (either on local or national tv) for the whole season. For League Pass Choice, you pay $99 for the season but have to pick just 7 teams whose games you can watch. Either package is great for someone like me who lives way outside the TV market for his favorite team(s).

If Crawford, JJ and JT continue to use their skill to break down the defense to pass, Woody’s job is safe.
Cut and paste,
I like to keep the box score while listening to the game. last night I noticed that most of our guards had more assists than shot attempts for much of the game. This is the kind of ball movement and unselfish play that leads to big wins.
Ray, I’ll take the poke in the eye with a grin. But who was to know Crawford would dish out 9 assists. We all look at past and comments from numbers to get a feel for what kind of a player a new addition is. I certainly had not looked at anything that would prepare me for Crawford’s performance.
I will glean satisfaction from seeing the Hawks play great by spreading the ball around. The front court had one more attempt than the back court. 32/31 with the PF’s putting up 14 shots. Great balance.
Nobody had to be a star in this game. I contend all the talk about needing another one is overrated. All the talk on JJ needing to put the team on his back is BS. vava74 pointed how “goals” for each player are unattainable. We are not a 120 PPG team. Our goal for the back court should be 30 assists per night. Who cares who scores. Time for the stars to eat ego’s and win ball games.
Once again I give props to Crawford for more assists than attempts.

niremetal,
That comment was not a quote. Sorry you didn’t like my choice of words. There has been criticism of JJ’s lack of ability to lead and perform in the playoffs and in the 4th quarter. on 790 the Zone listen to the latest Woody interview for one example. Other examples are littered throughout posts on these blogs for the last two years. In the past you seemed to put the fault on Woody and his system or plays. My critique was more general and blamed style of play and shot attempts by the back court.
The performance in the last game was example of how the Hawks back court can play a more up tempo pass first type of basketball. I hope JT and Crawford fight for minutes through passing and assists. I believe it will inspire JJ and Bibby to do the same.
The wallet is out and I have my credit in hand but I still won’t buy our “new style of play” until I see more of it. Can we play this well against a good defensive team.
I am not nearly as interested or proficient in dissecting posts. I am much more interested in the Hawks going to the next level and we now have a much better blue print to build from.

kirknga,
I doubt Woody will get into comical despair this season. If he cannot get it done with this team, he knows it is time to pack the bags. I do expect him to be successful this year. However, I think that success comes with some shift in plans before Christmas. I don’t know what changes over the next 2 months, but personally, I am turning that from a frustration to a source of entertainment.
Next source of entertainment, alternate plans for revenue enhancement around the league.

I would not be shocked if part of the NBA ref settlement includes allowing them to make extra money from personal appearances. Get a NBA ref for your summer league game at the local gym only $2,500

Kevin,
That wasn’t me dissecting a post. That was me trying to subtly make the point that pretty much EVERYone I’ve seen post around here agrees that we need to take pressure off JJ, not put more pressure on him (much less ask him to carry the team). Pretty much everyone seems to agree that the Hawks path to the title should mimic that of the ‘04 Pistons. So your last paragraph seemed to be railing against arguments that were never made.

Well that’s it for Dixon, Wilks, Sims, and West.
Hunter and Siler remain. Will the Hawks keep both, or just one? Or neither, and sign somebody else? Hmmmmm.

So it’s Othello. Glad to see we aren’t cutting him loose, especially if he’s looked like a “true” combo forward in training camp. Wish we would have kept 14, though, although all the writing on the wall was pointing to 13…
