Ex-UGA center lands at UNC-Asheville

Former Georgia center John Cannon, who left the basketball team before the SEC tournament in March, will transfer to North Carolina-Asheville, the Asheville Citizen-Times reports.

Cannon, 6 feet 10, 240 pounds, was the leading shot blocker in N.C. high school history with 620 blocks at Mountain Heritage High outside Asheville.

As a sophomore at UGA, he averaged 1.4 points, 1.1 rebounds in 18 games as a reserve.

“Getting up the courage to leave Georgia was the biggest thing. I didn’t want to upset my teammates or make them dislike me. I was surprised at how well they supported my decision, but I shouldn’t have been. Those guys are like my brothers,” Cannon told Andrew Pearson of the Citizen-Times.

Ex-Tech star Chris Bosh not eager to leave Heat

In an interview Tuesday with Dan Le Batard’s show on ESPN Radio in Miami, ex-Georgia Tech star Chris Bosh said he wants to stay with the Heat.

“I don’t want to go anywhere. I like it here. It’s Miami,” Bosh said. “Everybody wants to come here. Yeah.”

Bosh has two seasons and $42 million left on his contract with the Heat, but can opt out before June 30 and become an unrestricted free agent.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports that the Mavericks and Lakers would be among multiple teams that would have interest in Bosh, should he opt out and become a free agent. Bosh likely would attract another large offer, such as the six-year, $110 million deal signed in 2010, but when asked on Le Batard’s show if he would accept an offer below market value, he said: “If that’s what it takes.”

Fellow Heat stars Dwyane Wade and LeBron James also can opt out of their contracts before June 30.

Bosh, James and Wade are in the fourth season together with the Heat. They won the past two NBA …

Laettner to mingle with Kentucky fans at charity event

Former Duke star Christian Laettner will be in Atlanta for Tuesday’s Duke-Kentucky game, which is part of the State Farm Champions Classic at the Georgia Dome.

Laettner and former Kentucky standout Jeff Sheppard (1994-98), a McIntosh High graduate, are hosting a pre-game party to honor Dick Vitale at the Hilton Garden Inn at 275 Baker Street from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday. Proceeds will benefit the V Foundation for cancer research.

Laettner spoke to AJC staff writer Carroll Rogers recently about how he got the idea for the event, about making his first appearance at a Duke-Kentucky game since his miracle shot over the Wildcats in the 1992 regional final, and this year’s Duke team. Here are excerpts:

Q. How did the event come about?

A. Jeff Sheppard and I did something really fun last year in Kentucky. He had the “Villains vs. Heroes game,” and I was the head villain. So I called him up two months ago and said ‘Let’s do something before the Duke-UK game in Atlanta’ and …
