Alabama RB Drake, a Hillgrove High grad, arrested

Alabama junior running back Kenyan Drake was arrested early Saturday, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Drake, who played at Hillgrove High, was charged with one misdemeanor count of “obstructing governmental operations.”

According to the arrest report, Tuscaloosa police were investigating a downtown shooting early Saturday morning and secured the crime scene with police tape.

The report said, “While investigators were working on the crime scene Kenyan Adam Drake told officers his vehicle was parked inside the crime scene and he wanted to get his vehicle. Officers told him he would not be able to get his vehicle until the scene was released by (police).

“Drake became upset and went through the crime scene tape and entered the crime scene after being told not to by officers. Officers immediately took the suspect into custody and charged him with Obstructing Governmental Operations. … He was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail pending a $1,000.00 Bond.”

Alabama coach Nick Saban released a statement via a university spokesman.

“I’m aware of the situation with Kenyan and will handle it once I’ve had a chance to review all of the information and talk to the appropriate people,” Saban said.

The code of Alabama defines obstructing government operations as:

(a) A person commits the crime of obstructing governmental operations if, by means of intimidation, physical force or interference or by any other independently unlawful act, he:

(1) Intentionally obstructs, impairs or hinders the administration of law or other governmental function; or

(2) Intentionally prevents a public servant from performing a governmental function.

(b) This section does not apply to the obstruction, impairment or hindrance of the making of an arrest.

(c) Obstructing governmental operations is a Class A misdemeanor.

In his first two seasons, Drake rushed for 975 yards and 13 touchdowns, including 694 yards and eight touchdowns last year.

Drake, 20, battled sophomore Derrick Henry to be starter T.J. Yeldon’s backup. Drake was a four-star prospect in Alabama’s 2012 class.
