Catcher Max Pentecost of Kennesaw State won the Johnny Bench Award from the Greater Wichita (Kan.) Area Sports Commission banquet. The award goes to the top Division I catcher.
Pentecost became the first KSU player to win the award and the first from Georgia.
Indiana’s Kyle Schwarber and Ole Miss’ Will Allen were the other finalists.
Other winners include Florida State’s Buster Posey and Cal State Fullerton’s Kurt Suzuki.
During the 2014 season, Pentecost led the nation in hits with 113 and ranked second in batting average at .422. Both set new Atlantic Sun Conference and Kennesaw State single-season records.
Pentecost had 24 doubles, 61 RBIs, nine home runs and two. Pentecost also drew 30 walks while striking out a miniscule 26 times in 268 at-bats.
Pentecost became the school’s highest MLB draft pick when he was chosen at No. 11 by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this month.
