Tech selects Roddy Jones as radio broadcast analyst

Georgia Tech selected one of the Yellow Jackets more popular football players to fill its opening for a color analyst on football radio broadcasts.

Roddy Jones will join Brandon Gaudin, who himself will be the Jackets’ second-year radio play-by-play announcer, in the booth for games in the coming season.

“I am honored and incredibly excited to be a part of the Georgia Tech radio team in the fall,” Jones said in a release. “… Georgia Tech certainly has a special place in my heart, and the games can’t start soon enough!”

Jones’ debut comes Aug. 30 when Tech plays host to Wofford, but he has gained lots of broadcasting experience. It includes extensive analyst work (with Gaudin) on ESPN3 online telecasts, including Tech’s Pro Day and spring football game as well as numerous baseball and softball broadcasts. In 2012, Jones had a featured weekly segment on the football radio pregame show.

While a Tech undergrad, Jones hosted “This Week in Tech Athletics” on RamblinWreck.com and continued to do more work on Tech’s website as a graduate student.

“Luring Roddy to the booth is a win on all fronts,” Gaudin said in a statement. “He was a star at Tech, is already a proven on-air talent, and has an outstanding reputation in the community. It doesn’t hurt that he’s also one of the nicest, most upbeat people I’ve ever been around. We’re lucky to have him back in the Yellow Jacket family.”

Jones played running back for the Jackets on coach Paul Johnson’s first four Tech teams, from 2008-11. He started more games (52) than any player in Jackets football history and ranks among Tech’s all-time leaders in career games played, career rushing yards (1,846) and career touchdowns (19).

As a redshirt freshman in 2008, Jones carried 13 times for 214 yards and two touchdowns in the Jackets’ memorable win at Georgia.

No matter who they get, it will be a challenge to remain upbeat when the jackets look so stupid on the field. No, not vs wofford. Against the real opponents. Good luck, roddy.

It will be nice to have a color analyst who played in the system – his insights ought to be very informative.

No matter how fans feel about the football program, they must really thank David Braine for what the school has now. Giving long contracts to basketball coach and eleven year contract to a football coach who was never successful on the big stage. Braine must have hated Tech more than the bulldog nation.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much to bring out the haters. Fortunately, we have Roddy Jones in the booth. Roddy, hope you have a great career.
