Updated: Tech’s Schniederjans new No. 1 amateur golfer

Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans of Powder Springs is the new No. 1-ranked amateur golfer in the world and he demonstrated that ability this weekend on a sponsor’s exemption on the Web.com Tour and finished tied for fifth in Wichita, Kan.

Both Patrick Rodgers and Matt Fitzpatrick made their pro debuts this week, so Schniederjans ascended to the top rank. He was runner-up last month at the NCAA championship in the individual competition, falling in a playoff.

On Saturday at the Web.com Tour’s Air Capital Classic, he shot a 65 for a 200 total after three rounds and tied for seventh, trailing eventual winner Sebastian Cappelen by four shots (65-196). Schniederjans then completed the tourney with a solid 67 on Sunday for the top-five finish. Schniederjans competed as an amateur on a sponsor’s exemption in the event. It was Cappelen’s pro debut and he won with a par on the final hole.

Schniederjans turned 21 this week, and he already has said he will return to the Yellow Jackets for his senior season. Should he remain No. 1 after the U.S. Amateur, which will be held at the Atlanta Athletic Club from Aug. 11-17,  he will receive the McCormack Medal that clinches a spot in both the British Open and U.S. Open.

The No. 2-ranked amateur in the world is Alabama sophomore Robby Shelton, who helped  lead the Crimson Tide to the NCAA title in May.

No offense to Ollie, but give me Robby Shelton at #1 after watching his clutch play for the Championship against Oklahoma State. You can’t phase that guy, and he’s only a rising sophomore as well.
