Katherine Webb drew lots of attention from ESPN Monday night. (AP Photo)
Late in the first quarter of the game — a 42-14 Alabama blowout — ESPN’s cameras began to focus on Katherine Webb, the 2012 Miss Alabama USA, who was sitting with McCarron’s mother.
“You quarterbacks,” Musburger said to color man Kirk Herbstreit, a former Ohio State QB, “you get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman.”
“Wow!” analyst Kirk Herbstreit chimed in.
“If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with Pop,” Musburger added.
ESPN’s Mike Soltys apologized on Twitter.
“We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test,” Soltys tweeted. “However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”
All the attention ESPN gave her has made Webb an Internet sensation.
As of early Wednesday morning, she had more than 213,000 followers on Twitter — including LeBron James — up from several hundred before the game.
All of the attention doesn’t seem to bother the 23-year-old Webb.
“It’s been actually kind of fun,” she told The Associated Press.

Brent Musburger acted like a pig on Monday night. He is an arrogant,self-absorbed ‘expert ‘ on all sports. Did he ever play any competitive sports? Was he any good?
I seems to me public figures have been fired for less than this. It was embarrassing and ESPN/ABC should be ashamed.

I don’t think either ESPN or Brent Musburger should apologize for anything. It was a complimentary comment regarding an obviously beautiful woman. And his encouragement to young football players to throw the ball around in the backyard with their Dad’s and become quarterbacks was funny in context. Didn’t Kirk Herbstreit agree with Brent in his “Wow” comment.

If ESPN feels it’s necessary to apologize for commenting on a beautiful woman, then why do they show the Cheerleaders on the sidelines…because they are all ugly??? NO! Because they are beautiful and men (and some women) want to see them. Why are they barely dressed? Because sex sells! If it doesn’t bother the woman in question, leave it alone. Drop it. Brent Musberger is a true dousche most of the time, but in this instance, I think someone got a little too worked up over nothing. The guy did nothing wrong other than perhaps embarrass himself by going on about it a little too long. His comments were not vulgar, nor were they disrespectful to the woman, who not insignificantly took no offense at what Musburger said. Some people seem to think his age deprives him of the “right” to call a young woman beautiful, and that in fact is far more offensive in its blatant prejudice.

“We here at ESPN apologize for calling Miss Alabama beautiful, and are VERY sorry we put the height and weight of our players out there for the world to see before every game. Brent said what every (normal) guy watching that game was thinking: “Damn, she’s beautiful. He’s a lucky guy. Good for AJ.” Why should Brent or ESPN apologize for that? Don’t let the PC police rule your business or your life. This is nothing more than sensationalism at its worst. You think maybe playing the likes of Pittsburgh and Stanford week in and week out didn’t prepare them that well for an SEC heavyweight? My wife and I were discussing what happened. I told my wife that I would have probably said something about how pretty she was if I were Musberger and my wife agreed. Should my wife have divorced me because I noticed another woman’s beauty? Don’t think so. We are just too politically correct these days.

So hypocritical. A month ago EVERYONE was bashing Rob Parker for calling Robert Griffin a corny black guy, which is true in many people’s opinions. McCarron’s girlfriend was called beautiful, etc. because it’s true in many people’s opinions.. Parker’s career gets slaughtered (contract not renewed) and Musburger gets a public apology on his behalf by ESPN. I agree with you all, Musburger’s comments were not out of line. I just want everyone to see why the “race card” is always played by certain groups of people. ESPN just falls in line with the historical context of this country. Accept truth.

Brent Musburger started the telecast like he was once again going to be the homer for Notre Dame. Then the further the game went and Alabama drilled the Irish, the more Brent Musburger backed off all of the Notre Dame accolades and became more neutral. He wanted to play up the Irish though and Heaven knows how bad he would have become if Notre Dame could have been competitive.

I don’t really care about what he said. She is a fox and that is all there is to it. The fact is he is a dufus through and through. There is a reason that CBS let him go years ago when he was a commentator on SEC games and the NFL. I hate listening to him on ESPN and they always get him on the big games which mean we are stuck with him. Please ESPN get his annoying voice off the air already…………………….

I watched the game and he didn’t simply just say he she was beautiful. If the cameras had panned to his face, I’m sure his eyes would have been out of his head rolling around on the ground. It was borderline inappropriate. But I blame the producers for continuing to show her. One time was quite enough. Just my 2 cents.

Not usually a Musberger fan, but I am with him on this call. No apologies are necessary. In fact, we should applaud his good eyesight, especially at his age–which is just a few years older than mine. The bottom line is that if Katherine Webb is not THE most gorgeous woman in America then she’ll damn sure so,until the best looking woman in the country comes along.. Katherine is a knockout and Brent was only acknowledging that fact. NOTHING that Brent said was, in ANY WAY, insulting, derogatory, or otherwise inappropriate. He simply commented on the fact that she was an attractive woman, and that was it. What kind of world do we live in when someone has to look over his shoulder for dishing compliments on a woman’s looks??? Absolutely mind-boggling that ESPN would have to make any sort of apology for ANYTHING that Brent said that night. Jerry – People like Average Looking Female feel that Musberger’s next comment about QBs getting all the women was the real issue. Let us not ignore this point. Nevertheless, I believe Musburger was merely joking around with his younger commentator (as Herbstreet’s wife evidently is also beautiful) and not some expression that women are mere possessions like a sports car. Maybe, we need to look deeper into those trees and find a sense of humor.

So many are at fault: (1) Notre Dame for playing such a poor and uninteresting game; (2) the camera man for lingering on the beautiful Ms. Webb; (3) Musburger and Herbstreet for their commentary; (4) Ms. Webb’s parents for their part in creating such a beautiful woman; (5) McCarron for dating her and allowing her to attend the game; (6) the makers of the Barbie dolls which give girls their first unrealistic look at the perfect body; and (7) of course Ms. Webb for perpetuating all the bad stereotypes for woman, i.e. looking glamorous, winning beauty contests, etc. This really requires a complete federal investigation and all must be held accountable.

Really, what else could have been said….Bama was all over the score board….game out of hand…so he did what any normal guy of any age would do….what a beautiful young lady in the stands. Calling a woman beautiful is NOT the problem. Suggesting that you “get” women for throwing a football is the problem. Women are not commodities traded for football prowess. This young woman chooses to date the quarterback for her own reasons. He didn’t earn her on the field. That entitlement and assumption of ownership was what caused the pushback, not a simple compliment.

People who whine about “political correctness” are basically saying “I can’t be bothered not to talk and act like an oppressive jerk, so I’m going to paint anyone who expects me not to as just being petty and annoying.” As Travis Waldron wrote: “It’s a culture that views women as nothing more than chattel, a commodity to be won by the best player even if she isn’t a willing participant. It fosters a sense of entitlement to women and their bodies that only ingrains the rape and violence culture deeper into the game.”
