ESPN not renewing Rob Parker’s contract

Comments about Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s “blackness” have cost commentator Rob Parker his job, ESPN announced Tuesday.

The network said it will not renew its contract with Parker, who was suspended last month for his remarks on “First Take.” During a Dec. 13 episode, Parker pointed out that Griffin is engaged to a white woman and is rumored to be a Republican.

“Is he a brother or a cornball brother?” Parker said.

On Dec. 19, Parker released an apology on his Twitter account, @RobParkerESPN.

“I blew it and I’m sincerely sorry,” Parker wrote. “Robert Griffin III is a talented athlete who not only can do great things on the field, but off the field handles himself in a way we’re all taught – with dignity, respect and pride.”

The following day, ESPN announced Parker was suspended for 30 days. Parker’s contract expired at the end of the year.

“Evaluating our needs and his work, including his recent RG III comments, we decided not to renew his deal,” an ESPN spokesperson said Tuesday.

Lesson learned by others also. Acting white ( believing in self reliance and voting republican is OK.) It’s not evil. Glad the dude was fired. RGB3 is proud of his life, and if not carrying a sign and down with the cause acting is BS. Good for him

Parker was telling the truth though. But, you can’t always speak the truth and not suffer consequences.

I think it’s funny how people were saying “if Parker were white he’d be fired”. Well, I guess so.

Part of getting an NFL contract is getting a token wf. Follow the Benjamins! Was shocked someone was held accountable for stereotyping that wasn’t white.

Ever listed to black talk radio? Two minuts made me sorry I was ever born white in the USA. What Parker said was NOTHING. He could easily get a job on black talk radio and let the words fly.

WOW! She is gorgeous!! What a beautiful woman! If you live in Texas or the Washington area – you better get out the football and start passing it around. These are the women the QB’s are getting!! WOW!! Etc., etc., etc. etc.

Freedon of speech? Wasn’t he getting paid by ESPN? As a paid employee of the ESPN, would you want him spouting such nonsense? Freedom of speech is on YOUR time, not your employers’.

Freedom of speech does exist however it does not free one of consequences. Ask Parker and this is not the first time he has been the center of controversial comments.

Exactly. He should get a job as political commentator.
If he says “Obama’s not down with the cause”, he’d be 100% correct!

Freedom of Speech? Everyone has the freedom of speach…
You can say whatever you want, but no one is immune from consequences.

Something that has been lost in the country for several years.

It took 16 posts until someone mentioned Obama in a topic that is not about politics. Not bad. Expected it within 10 to be honest.

Maybe we’ll make it to page 2 next time.

Keep up the good work, bigots.

That is a discussion and debate that us black men have at the barbershop.. And it should have stayed there. Come on Rob you should have known better. Not a topic for a national audience. Regardless if he is a “uncle Tom” or not, it should not have been said on ESPN. I knew he was getting fired the moment it came out his mouth. Lol… But at the end of the day who cares about RG3″s preferences in women or political issues. He is a good role model for African American youth, pronounces his words correctly, and an exceptional athlete… Lol Rob cleared his desk as soon as they went to a commercial break that morning. Lol. The funniest part was when skip bayless said.. ” doesn’t he have braids?” lol

I wonder if ESPNY fired Parker to make room for the Accessory to Murder? I wonder if “racism” is a bigger no-no than murder to ESPNY? Do we live in the country where if you participate in a murder, you get glorified and hired by the sports media, but if you pray to Jesus after a touchdown, you get eviserated by the same people who are hiring the Accessory?

What a country!

Mr. Parker’s racist comments were uglier than Michelle 0bama.

Rob Parker would feel right at home on the staff of the AJC.

He could be the new “Terrence Moore,” only with less talent, common sense, sports acumen oe intent to bash caucasian athletes and sports figures only.

ESPN will simply replace this unqualified, unstable Affirmative-Action hire with another one.

If you want racist-free NFL coverage, why are you still watching ESPN if your cable or satellite provider delivers NFL Network to your home?

Mr. Duh

It is probably best the network got Rob Parker out of there BEFORE he could say something even more stupid or racist to incoming NFL analyst (& alleged murderer) Ray-Ray Lewis who would offer a completely different type of retort.

Is there a special committee in the black community that decides the degree of “blackness” for every black person? Do they give you guys a score? Sounds like Parker is jealous of the guy that was smarter and more athletic than him.

January 9th, 2013

Maybe it’s just me, but didn’t Rob Parker come off as a “cornball” by using the word “cornball?”

And he is lacking when it comes to reading body-language of the young black man. Ever seen RGIII give some dap? It’s all straight brotherhood right there! A “cornball” would not be interested in all the gestures — trust me.

On merit, Parker was one of the few journalists who had experience to match Skip Bayless topic-for-topic and credentials demand his respect as a panelist on First Take. Dang!

My only question. What took them so long? And on a unreleated topic, is anybody really that upset over Musbergers comments about that fine looking Alabama girl. I got a kick out of it.

January 9th, 2013

There is no special committee to determine how black someone is it’s just been there forever though now at least.

Heck when I was in school although I am black people called me white even white friends of mine said I’m more white, and for the most part it’s because I didn’t watch/relate to things most blacks were doing. I’m not saying committing crimes other crap like that, but simple stuff.

A lot of blacks don’t watch Anime like that those that do are considered Nerds. If you played Video Games too much that was also something else contributing to whiteness. I’m only using what happened to me it could be different everyone.

I must say I do somewhat feel sorry for Rob Parker it was out of line, but when he did bring up the Tiger Woods situation I had to agree with him at that point.

As for the whole racism crap that people keep saying this comment section is I have yet to see anyone degrade any race and say mine is superior, or something in that manner.

As a 54 year old white male who grew up in NY and has lived in Atlanta since 91, I can say that virtually all of the racism I’ve encountered has been instigated by a black person towards a white person. I work in downtown Atlanta and I see it almost daily.

January 9th, 2013
8:19 am

A lot of you need to look up the definition of Racism…get over yourselves guys. If you want to be treated like everyone else, that means getting the same kind of lame a** bias and prejudice we all deal with, daily. You can’t have it both ways and being black doesn’t mean you should go through life so super damn sensitive.

Parker was just ignorant, and in fact his comments were more degrading than anything. To be really “Black” whatever that means you have to be a cornball brother? Is speaking well, having a steady job, etc. being an uncle Tom? Come on…

January 9th, 2013
8:28 am

People have such thin skin these days. I thought Rob Parker was fun to watch even though I wouldn’t agree with half of what he said. I like HONEST opinons not what damn network would have you believe. Liberalizing of America and they fire the Liberal Ironic don’t you think?

January 9th, 2013
8:30 am

The great unstated problem in America today is BLACK RACISM….it used to be white racism, but now that things have changed, way too many blacks seem to feel/believe it’s something that gives them the right to be racist without criticism.

Racism is racism folks, and the sooner everyone wises up, especially liberal media and guilty white folks, and is honest about it, the better off we will ALL be.

RG3 handles himself in a way that should be celebrated, not looked down upon. He isn’t having run-ins with the law, he isn’t having confrontations with officials, he isn’t having problems with his coaches or teammates. He is acting how an athlete should act and it is sad that some people want him to act differently.
