The day after the final day of the NFL regular season is typically referred to as Black Monday. A day in which coaches, general managers and other personnel are relieved of their positions after disappointing years.
Today is Black Monday. And it could be one of the busiest with seven teams potentially making moves at the top.
The first to pull the switch were the Cleveland Browns who dismissed coach Pat Shurmur and GM Tom Heckert. Shurmur’s replacement will be the Browns’ sixth coach since 1999.
In Jacksonville, the Jaguars fired GM Gene Smith after four seasons. Coach Mike Mularkey, a former Falcons offensive coordinator, could be next. Smith’s replacement will likely be tasked with bringing hometown boy Tim Tebow back to Florida.
And speaking of Tebow …
Jets head coach Rex Ryan publicly pleaded for his job this weekend and it might’ve worked. New York owner Woody Johnson fired Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, apparently for his decision to acquire Tebow from the Denver Broncos last March.
The Bears have let go coach Lovie Smith after nine seasons. Chicago became the first team since the 1996 Washington Redskins to miss the playoffs after starting the season 7-1.
In Philadelphia, Andy Reid’s tenure concluded Monday when the Eagles announced they would fire their head coach of 14 seasons.
The Kansas City Chiefs fired head coach Romeo Crennel and are evaluating the future of GM Scott Pioli.
Buffalo dismissed coach Chan Gailey after three losing seasons. Gailey, a native of Gainesville, Ga., formerly coached the Dallas Cowboys and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Bills failed to make the playoffs for a 13th straight year, the NFL’s longest active drought.
San Diego dismissed coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith after failing to make the playoffs for a third straight season.
Arizona’s Ken Whisenhunt, who led the Cardinals to their first Super Bowl in the 2008 season, became the seventh coach fired on Monday. Along with Whisenhunt, general manager Rod Graves also was let go.
One coach on the hot seat keeping his job is Tennessee’s Mike Munchak. Titans’ personnel director Mike Reinfeldt, however, will be replaced.
Larger speculation is on who will fill all the vacancies, the biggest name being thrown about is Jon Gruden, who has apparent indicated an interest in interviewing for some head coaching jobs.
Among the assistants getting a view from teams is Falcons’ offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, who will interview with the Kansas City Chiefs this week.

And who’s to feel sorry for these overpaid NFL coaches that get “fired?” Many Americans in today’s economy would love to be fired with millions owed them…and another potential sucker NFL team out there waiting to sign them up for another “try” at coaching!! The NFL coaching carousel is a “good old boys” club where failures seem to be only resume enhancers!! For instance, how many times will that perennial loser Norv Turner be given a head coaching job?? And how in the blue hell is Woody Johnson going to keep Rex Ryan another year? If he does, maybe the Jets can switch their home games to Downing Stadium which holds about 22,000—that should handle the Jets crowds next season.

don’t see the Falcons going far in the playoffs. They have too many missing parts to win it all. A pretty good team, but not that good. The weaknesses will show up greatly in the playoffs. They are 6-8 players away, especially on defense.

Yeah, Smith is getting fired. That makes sense. Matt Ryan is the best QB we’ve ever had. We’ve got a winning formula no matter what happens in two weeks.
Michael Turner needs to go… he’s done a great job over the years, but his time is up. Time to move on and get another back.

That’s why there are only a few teams that have the overall mix of talent/leadership to fall into the category that you mentioned. We are in the same boat as 25 or more NFL teams. The Falcons looked anemic yesterday and one can only hope that it’s due to just not having to win that game.

Esquire — To start with, careful with the word stupid just because you disagree…..next, if you think we can go one and done AGAIN and if not fall at Smith’s feet, you’re sadly mistaken. I just don’t understand not trying to win the game (which is understandable because it meant ZERO, other than maybe some positive momentum), but still leaving ALL your starters out there and riskiing injury (see Abe and Dunta). If he was playing to win (his words, not mine) then blow the doors off of the Yucks for a half, keep that mo’, and play the reserves in the second half.
If his fate were in my hands, I’d have called him on the carpet about 7 or 8 games ago and reprimanded him for his hardheadedness concerning Michael Turner. But that’s a whole other issue.

The Falcon’s excel at the short game. Yesterday, Matt Ryan passed up clear open receivers coming across the middle to go to guys who were obviously double covered. Sure, the pass wasn’t intercepted but it wasn’t completed either. When Matt came to the Falcons, it was the shot pass that no one could defend against. We have incredible receivers who make yards after the catch, we just need to get them the ball.
Michael Turner can’t “go” this season. Stop making calls that are meaningless now. We have the team we will either win with or loose with. Turner can and will play, probably in short yardage situations near the goal line. He is usually ok if he hits the hole. His problem is when he tries to go laterally.
Smith seems to be a great coach. The Falcons are capable of winning it all because of him. Yes, we need a couple of pieces, but that can be said of every team. It’s why we play the games.

The Falcons have the best recrod in the NFL, period. They lost a meaningless game yesterday. Most us us can remember when all Falcon games were meaningless ten weeks into the season because we were already out of the playoff picture. If they never win a playoff game the present regime is far surperior to what we have had in the past and better than most others in either league. Only three losses. I’ll take that every year.

Yeah, Mike Smith is on the hot seat. He will DEFINITELY be fired if we lose early in the playoffs again. He is:
A major reason the Falcons are finally competitive and respectable
Not Bobby Petrino
A cool 56-24 (.700 winning percentage) in five seasons
A coach that would have never put up with Michael Vick and his lack of knowledge relative to the playbook
Not Jim Mora, Jr.
Yeah, we’re gonna fire this guy. Heck, we should even hire some of the Monday morning “experts” who know so much about the game at this level and we’d be undefeated every year.
For the common sense impaired (and you know who you are): Yes, this is sarcasm.

I like being the fans who now expect more out of our team and not just glad we didn’t loose as many games this year as we did in the past. I’ll take the three loses every year too, as long as it’s not always the last one.

It seems to me that the Falcons pay no attention at all to a running game. Since they have none at all they can’t practice it, as shown by their lack of a ground game as well as their inability to stop anyone else’s ground game.
Of course they will be a home team 1-and-done again. Playoff teams, save the Falcons, ARE NOT 1-dimentional! Such a shame to have all that passing ability but just can’t do it when the big boys play.

Falcons fans need to be careful not to react to the national sports media’s view of the Falcons. There were some good points made regarding Mike Smith and his win-loss record with the Falcons. He ranks second among active coaches, behind Jim Harbaugh (49ers). Go here and sort by Winning Percentage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_National_Football_League_head_coaches. Notice the top five teams are all in the playoffs.
So there you go. We’ve resolved the task of “get a good coach” and can check that one off the list. Let’s focus our attention elsewhere.

Man the level of intelligence of some Falcons “fans” is beyond anemic. The short passing game?? The birds belly-flopped?? Anybody that knows anything about the NFL knows that we played the most vanilla game possible while giving reps to our starters. This game was just like the Carolina game geniuses and what happened when we came out next week against a team that really mattered? We put up 34 pts. and gave up 0 to the beloved Giants. You limit what you put on game footage to get a competitive advantage. We didnt need to play anywhere near our best ball but Denver, NE, Hou, Minn, GB, Was, and Seattle all had to. Our boys will be ready for GB/Sea in the 2nd round. Some of you worrisome “fans” that just started watching this team a few years ago are the worst.

Kurtis, You’re either a young dude or you’re really not very knowledgeable about football. You should look at the Falcon’s record prior to Mike Smith becoming head coach. Firing a coach because he didn’t “win enough” is a mistake the old owners made all the time. As big a deal as most folks like to make of winning playoff games, when it’s one and done it’s tough. On another note, I think Andy Reid is a case of if you can’t fire the indians, you got to fire the chiefs.

Agree with what I say or not, I don’t give a rats a$$. Yes, the Falcons organization is 1000 times better than it has ever been, but we’ve lost in the playoffs before, now it’s time to win. Mike Smith has the owner and the GM and the team to win, but he’s gotta take his thumb off of Koetter and Nolan and let them do what they do best. Bottom line: He stinks and always has. He is a Tebow freak show and it fills seats.
From NFL.com
Foles QB rating this year 79.1 Vick 78.2.
Foles more yds per game, higher completion percentage.
Foles lower interception % 1.9, Vick 2.8
