‘Screaming indian’ logo returning to Braves gear

The screaming indian was part of the Braves logo when the franchise moved here from Milwaukee in 1966. (Uni Watch)

ESPN’s Uni Watch blog unveiled the upcoming baseball season’s new batting practice hats.

Among the most notable new designs is the Braves’ cap, which includes the screaming indian logo that has not been a part of the Braves’ uniform since 1989. The new cap features the yelling brave in red stitching on a blue rimmed hat.

In 2012, the Braves introduced an “alternate home” uniform that was similar to what the team wore when the franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. The cream-colored threads did not feature a tomahawk nor the screaming indian. The left sleeve of the new jersey has a crossed tomahawk instead of the screaming indian logo that appeared on the 1966 jerseys.

What do you think of the new Brave batting practice hat?

  • I like it, may even buy it (73%, 3,318 Votes)
  • Couldn't care less. Go (insert favorite team here)! (18%, 813 Votes)
  • I'm offended (9%, 424 Votes)

The retro look is not popular among those who object to the use of Native American symbol or names in sports, including Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas who said of the new look:

Last year the Braves conspicuously avoided using their “screaming Indian” logo as a sleeve patch on their retro alternate jersey — a welcome move for those of us who oppose the appropriation of Native American imagery in sports. Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn’t been permanently mothballed. Disappointing. Grade: F

What are your feelings? Will you be buying the new hat, or do you object?

(Please keep the conversation clean and cordial. Christmas may be over, but the big man is always watching.)

This is great is it’s a part of the teams history. I don’t get the issue here. I’m Irish-the Fighting Irish logo doesn’t bother me. So why is this offesive to snobby NewYorkers and supposedly native Americans. I think it’s a salute to their honor, integrity, and toughness.

I think it’s Great. being a Native American – I feel it’s not a slap in the face to Native People – but a positive representation. – If you are offended by the use of a Image of a Native American as a mascot – You are only looking for something to offend you. I am not offended by this because I am not of Native American descent . But as usual most people cannot see the other persons view of this. I might be offended if my land was stolen and my ancestors were killed by gov’t sponsored genocide and some wore a goofy caricature that is supposed to represent me and my people. The Braves would dare put a Sambo looking caricature that would offend black people because it is already unsafe to go to a game downtown. Unfortunately no one has killed off any of the ignorant, redneck ancestors of today’s average, low I.Q., ignorant, trailer dwelling, Atlanta Braves fan.

The hat is a good looking hat. Frankly, the Braves have always sold merchandise that included the “screaming” Indian head. The team has not worn it on uniforms for 23 years, but it has been sold on hats, t-shirts and other memorabilia.

In the vein of this article, when will they stop selling pictures of New York with the Twin Towers? When will they stop selling posters saying, “The South Will Rise Again”? When will we stop taking Christmas out of the Christmas season? The list goes on. The phrase “Good morning” could be offensive and subsequently outlawed at the rate we are going. Y’all have a nice day and please don’t have me arrested for wishing you a good day. :)

But NOW apparently the PC police say that the Braves need to “try” and “win” games. Who asked them!!??!? I’m ashamed that the Braves have turned their back on their heritage of losing. I guess that’s the “modern” world we live in. I wish thing could stay the way they were, forever.

How does a newspaper article get away with a poll asking if people “Could Care Less?” The proper phrase is “Couldn’t Care Less…” If you could care less, then it means that you actually care and there are degrees of caring less that you can still achieve. You all write for a living…you would think you would grasp a simple phrase.

I liked the old multi-colored image of the “Screaming Brave” better; but this one is okay.

I really don’t understand what all the hoopla is about. Mascots are almost always chosen in tribute to their progenitors, not to denigrate them.

I honestly believe it is simply the professional protesters and agitators who start these things. Then empy-headed, utterly moronic media and other left wing types jump on the bandwagon. The liberals are nothing if not lock step conformists with the latest cause du jour.

I’m torn. As a designer, I am offended by the poor use of the design (the colors for one). Its a legendary illustration and considering the front office had to have anticipated this controversy, its a waste to have not done the original justice

That said, it speaks broadly about the front office of the braves. 1. That they would use this logo now when they didn’t last year and 2. That they would use it so poorly.

There are so many elements now that they could have chosen from, the lowercase a being my favorite. (My favorite braves hat is the riverstone little a I bought last year).

I can also see how some people are offended by it. Everyone has their pet issue that they get all bent out of shape over. The keep christ in christmas folks don’t seem to care when they offend other people. I think the organization made a calculation, they assumed that their fans don’t care about offending people, so let’s sell them a hat.

I think a lot of Georgians need to grow up and realize that you live in a bigger world than your deadend 9-5, wife and kids, suburban existence. You should probably get out of the state and see the world and stop calling liberals “crying sissies”. They make just as much money as you do, and they pay just as much in taxes as you do, even though Faux has convinced you otherwise, and they go to plenty of Braves games. Obama & politics simply has nothing to do with this. Its about the ongoing abuse and neglect of Native Americans who were lied to, stolen from and massacred because of an errant belief in manifest destiny.

Much like the rebel flag, we should consider relegating native american mascots to the past and let’s march on into the future.

It’s wrong. I used to not understand why it was wrong, till I put some though into it. The closest things we have to this in reference to white people, are , “The Fighting Irish of Nortre Dame.” But the history of that mascot is a little racist as well, in reference to Irish being drunk, rowdy fighters. We don’t have mascots that refer to English, French, White, Blacks, Chinese, Asian etc. Why is it that it’s okay for us to have mascots which denigrate Native Culture, but not any of the other groups I referenced? It’s a little thing…but in the grand scheme of things…wouldn’t it be best to leave ethnic mascots out of the picture?

For you to use “again” would imply that I have already received an “F” in English, which, for the record, could not be further from the truth. While I am in no way a big fan of the AJC, they are using an accepted phrase in the US. You may not accept and use the phrase, but do not belittle someone for using it. It can be found in dictionaries. Although the two phrases are not literally the same, figuratively, they are equal.

First of all, it’s not a “blue rimmed hat.” It’s a blue hat or cap. I don’t see a rim. While I agree that red and blue don’t go together, it’s not the worst design I’ve ever seen. But what I dislike the most is the furor over depicting a “screaming Indian” on the cap. The so called “Screaming Indian” is a depiction of a “Brave” captured at moment that he is giving his war cry. It’s not demeaning. It’s a celebration of the well documented warrior spirit common to native Americans.

Way to go Braves. Show a little backbone. The Screamin Indian should have been on last year’s retro uni. I have a news flash for all you fake protestors. The people who show up one series a year and remind us how bad we all were 100 years ago do not go to Braves games.

I suspect the Braves’ organization. located in the “red state” of Georgia, and the majority of its redneck fan base are the kinds of folks still clinging to their guns and religion, and continue to fly the Confederate battle flag in the face of 25% of its citizens.

Hope and change will soon be coming to Georgia in the form of some pre-Bush era tax rates that will bring some fairness to the less fortunate in our society.

Sadly, how soon WE forget that it used to be the Sambo logo that sports teams depicted. The indian logo has been removed from the uniform since 1989 for a reason, it was deemed offensive.

Why needlessly start a controversy? If you want to merchandise the logo, fine. But making it a part of the official team uniform makes a political statement. Whether you agree or disagree with the statement the organization is throwing the players into a political situation. They’re there to play ball not deal with racial politics. We may disagree with liberal political ultra sensitivity, but I don’t want Jason Heyward to have to answer questions about this crap all year long.

And frankly, I’m sick of dealing with racial politics in sports. Whether its offensive or not is not even an issue I want to deal with. Let’s just play ball and leave race issues out of it.

And by the way, the selection of the term “Braves” is to honor the American Indian, not to make fun of them. You would not associate a name with your team that you would not personally want your own name connected with. Remember the FSU Seminole thing? The tribe came forward and told the do gooders to get lost. They are proud that a great school like FSU is using their name. It brings honor to both the school and the tribe. Get lost, do gooders. Get lost, media idiots who continually dredge up this nonsense.

I’ve always liked the Braves logos. The “screaming Indian” as it is called always looked like a happy, smiling Indian to me ever since I was a child. I miss Chief Noc-a-homa and thought it was a positive, creative use of the play on words and actually raised people’s awareness of indigenous people. It’s unfortunate that some people are offended by the symbolism, especially native Americans. I don’t believe that the symbols are negative nor does it portray Native Americans in a bad light. As long as the symbols, chants, phrases associated with sports is not derogatory then it only serves to heighten people’s awareness (existence) of the Native American culture.

Native americans should be glad a symbol of their existence is used on a national stage. Otherwise their noble history will be lost to the majority of americans forever. The old western movies are becoming relics. History being taught in school is being “downsized”. Just ask any yung person questions about the American Revolution, Civil War or World War II for that matter. Yes,I’m amazed. I often hear educated adults use this phrase “Could care less.” It’s so basic but get by people because they hear it their whole lives….stated incorrectly. My first college English professor began the semester by giving us a ‘hit list’ of often-used words/phrases that were either slang or popular phrases/words that were used out of context. He made it clear that if any of these showed up in class assignments that it would receive an automatic grade of F. It made an impression, to say the least. Of course, one of these happened to be “could care less,” which is the exact opposite of what you actually want to say.

I will never understand why this is even an issue worth mentioning on several levels.

First of all, most teams choose a nickname based upon either a heritage thing or out of admiration of the characteristics of said mascot or both. Native American mascots set in the 17th/18th century were chosen due to their strength, stamina, fierceness in battle, etc. Nobody is making fun of them.

Secondly, their are boilermakers, fighting irish, pioneers, quakers, trojans, moutaineers, volunteers, patriots, rebels, dutchmen, commodores, majors, captains, aggies, cowboys, axemen, lumberjacks, archers, bishops, barons, deacons, knights, britons, buckaneers, cavaliers, crusaders, fighting scots, generals, giants, governors, hatters, hilltoppers, hoosiers, ichabods, judges, leathernecks, loggers, mariners, monarchs, oilers, miners, poets, preachers, ragin cajurs, rangers, roughnecks, sooners, spartans, statesmen, terrible swedes, and the list could go on and on and on…..but to my knowledge nobody else has a problem. WHY?

Thirdly, MEDIA GET OVER YOURSELVES AND QUIT MAKING THIS AN ISSUE!

As a long-time Braves fan and a bit of an antiques enthusiast I am excited by the logo. It is full of energy and it has serious nostalgic value for me.
However . . . having said that, I am not Native American and I cannot presume to speak for or over the sensibilities of others whose culture may or may not be trivialized through sportswear imagery.
So basically if you’re offended by it, I won’t wear it.
But I can assure you that if the market responds with increased demand for this product I will begin producing my own replica caps with this exact logo/design and selling them through the proper channels.
Neither MLB nor the Atlanta Braves organization has the ability to restrict my use of that particular image or to prevent me from introducing items bearing that mark into the stream of commerce.
Why? you might ask.
The answer is similar. The Patent and Trademark Office through the Lanham Act does not offer trademark protection to offensive marks. Clearly this mark is offensive – in the same way that the Washington Redskins moniker is offensive, as a matter of law. (Google it up, dummy)
So, I am free to produce and distribute my own version of this very hat, and other “licensed” makers have no legal recourse.
Also, as a side note, all of you people who say the feelings of Native Americans regarding use of this and similar images are irrelevant are, well, irrelevant. Obviously it is good for you to be able to come here and post your opinion on the matter, but certainly you must realize that a grand total of zero important people in the world would give one penny for your opinion. Why? Because you have no credentials to support your backward positions. At the end of the day, no matter how loudly and confidently you shout your opinions and no matter how catchy your slogan, you’re still just a dumb hick with a mindset blunted by an acute lack of reference.

“I’m more offended by the jerseys with “Los” whatever on them. This is the USA not Mexico or some other South American country!”

The problem is, we white folks don’t count to the masters of political correctness. Anyone can do things to offend white people (especially those from the South) all day long and it doesn’t matter. Offending white people is almost a sport to various ethnic and political groups. Noone ever acknowledges that white Europeans were once slaves themselves. But we’re supposed to tip toe around making sure not to offend anyone else because of things that happened hundreds of years ago. And when we do, watch out, your whole life is about to be trashed (see Rocker, John) and turned upside down. Then the same offended people will sit around and laugh because they got another “dumb ignorant redneck”.

Mark me down for one of these hats, I’ll wear it proudly as a Braves fan. If your mind is so small that you think it makes me racist, you probably ought to spend some time looking in the mirror.

As far as I’m concerned, if you are offended and are not an American Indian, your opinion doesn’t count. I am part native american indian and have zero issues with the use of these psuedo stereotype images. A brave is just a brave. A chief is just a chief. A viking is still a viking, a patriot is still a patriot whether it is a sports team or a cultural heritage club. Reading more into it than that is hyper sensitivity. Get over yourself.

Would I feel different if I was fully practicing the rituals and customs of any tribe, maybe but I doubt it. In general, the various tribes only took on the combative persona stereotyped by hollywood AFTER they were attacked or displaced as the native land holders. There are countless examples of peaceful coexistence for years and only when explorer, colonist, and settlers began to forcibly take lands did the combative and defensive traits become evident. …for good reasons and with complete justification.

Maybe allowing the sports teams proper use would help those who are ignorant to better appreciate and respect the sacrifices made by native americans when their land was stolen and their culture displaced by white society.

I have no shame in who I am or the mix of heritages in my famly lines.

Of course, the reason I love the logo is because I’m white, hate everyone who isn’t white, and like to mock everyone else by putting images of their fierce warriors on my sports teams uniforms.

We seriously need to rethink the whole universal suffrage proposition. There needs to be some minimum level of rationality to be permitted engagement in the public sphere.

I wish we were the Atlanta Predators. We could make ourselves invisible and steal bases all the time! Although, only seeing in infrared may make it hard to find the base. We would have lasers on our shoulders though. That could help.

I think people today just look for things to complain about.. My great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee indian, and I do not find this offensive.

Ah, but you didn’t ask her how she felt–you just arrogantly claimed since a small fraction of your lineage isn’t white that you can. Go away.

GT Mike – You’re spouting the kind of revisionist history that encourages racism. The first people fought and killed each other for centuries before the Euros arrived. Secondly, many of the first people were nomadic and even those that weren’t very rarely had any sense of owning land so how could it have been stolen from them? You people been getting rich with all those monopolistic casinos the government lets you have so quit crying.
Come to think of it the Injun on the logo should be cryin, that would more accurately depict the history of the Braves.

I’m 100% native american. The hat should be used because all of the stereotypes are true. I hate to admit this, but my parents use to make me put deer skin over my back and hunt buffalo. If I had a successful kill with my bow and arrow, we would lose our minds and whoot and hollar in a circle with dancing. Then….we would return to the teepee and smoke peace pipe. Redman tobacco was all dad would allow us to chew. My sister makes beaded ornaments, if you can believe it. Shocker, huh.

I think the Braves need to omit this logo. I can see where it would be offensive just as the Cleveland Indian’s Chief Wahoo is offensive. Nothing quite like watching a bunch of southern sports fans discuss a controversial social issue. You really have to sift through all the barely-literate, threatening and just mean comments to find any thoughts of remote value.

It’s funny when someone tries to prove something isn’t bigoted or racist by name-calling and knocking entire social groups or cultures. Okay, maybe it’s not funny. Just say I’m prejudiced against folks who can’t have a decent conversation.

I personally like the hat. But I’m surprised they decided to use it (even if it’s just for batting practice) considering the organization has been trying to tone down on the NA stuff for years. I don’t want any negative attention to be brought to our organization so I feel it’d have been best to have just avoided this issue altogether. I’m seeing a lot of negativity on sports blogs surrounding the hat and Atlanta isn’t exactly the best city to be inviting unnecessary racial controversies.

Also, I don’t remember who said it but I read it earlier in the thread: There is a reason there are no Native American tribes near Turner Field (anymore). Read a book, jerk.

And he doesn’t know what a metrosexual looks like. seashell necklace? That ain’t metro buddy, and that ain’t no lady you just walked out of the bathroom with. That’s called full-blown AIDS.
I’m still laughing about the “t-shirts with whales on them” comment. I don’t know why; it’s really not that funny, but it was appropriate for ugadawg30, who probably lives in his parent’s basement and fills out applications for two-year colleges all day.

Yeah bubba, you and about six dozen other “part Indians” have piped in. Everybody is part Indian and everybody loves the racist N.A. stereotyping. You silly gits simply think the way you are told to think. That’s what TV is for.

“If people are going to complain about a logo on a cap, why don’t the bird lovers complain about the Cardinals and Orioles on those uniforms. ”

Because Cardinals and Orioles do not define human races. That inane comment makes about as much sense as the rest.
