‘Screaming indian’ logo returning to Braves gear

ESPN’s Uni Watch blog unveiled the upcoming baseball season’s new batting practice hats.

Among the most notable new designs is the Braves’ cap, which includes the screaming indian logo that has not been a part of the Braves’ uniform since 1989. The new cap features the yelling brave in red stitching on a blue rimmed hat.

In 2012, the Braves introduced an “alternate home” uniform that was similar to what the team wore when the franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. The cream-colored threads did not feature a tomahawk nor the screaming indian. The left sleeve of the new jersey has a crossed tomahawk instead of the screaming indian logo that appeared on the 1966 jerseys.

What do you think of the new Brave batting practice hat?

  • I like it, may even buy it (73%, 3,318 Votes)
  • Couldn't care less. Go (insert favorite team here)! (18%, 813 Votes)
  • I'm offended (9%, 424 Votes)

The retro look is not popular among those who object to the use of Native American symbol or names in sports, including Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas who said of the new look:

Last year the Braves conspicuously avoided using their “screaming Indian” logo as a sleeve patch on their retro alternate jersey — a welcome move for those of us who oppose the appropriation of Native American imagery in sports. Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn’t been permanently mothballed. Disappointing. Grade: F

What are your feelings? Will you be buying the new hat, or do you object?

(Please keep the conversation clean and cordial. Christmas may be over, but the big man is always watching.)

I wish people would get over the political correctness angle.

And it’s very easy to say that when you’re white and do not know what oppression and bigotry are.

I think people today just look for things to complain about.. My great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee indian, and I do not find this offensive.

Ah, but you didn’t ask her how she felt–you just arrogantly claimed since a small fraction of your lineage isn’t white that you can. Go away.

I do not see anything offensive it it at all. However, I personally do not care for it. Plus, why a special hat just for batting practice?

GT Mike – You’re spouting the kind of revisionist history that encourages racism. The first people fought and killed each other for centuries before the Euros arrived. Secondly, many of the first people were nomadic and even those that weren’t very rarely had any sense of owning land so how could it have been stolen from them? You people been getting rich with all those monopolistic casinos the government lets you have so quit crying.
Come to think of it the Injun on the logo should be cryin, that would more accurately depict the history of the Braves.

I’m 100% native american. The hat should be used because all of the stereotypes are true. I hate to admit this, but my parents use to make me put deer skin over my back and hunt buffalo. If I had a successful kill with my bow and arrow, we would lose our minds and whoot and hollar in a circle with dancing. Then….we would return to the teepee and smoke peace pipe. Redman tobacco was all dad would allow us to chew. My sister makes beaded ornaments, if you can believe it. Shocker, huh.

Seriously loving the people still using the “I’m 1/16th Cherokee so I think I can talk with authority here.” Well, maybe you are, but that still means you are 15/16ths white.

Of course, the reason I love the logo is because I’m white, hate everyone who isn’t white, and like to mock everyone else by putting images of their fierce warriors on my sports teams uniforms.

We seriously need to rethink the whole universal suffrage proposition. There needs to be some minimum level of rationality to be permitted engagement in the public sphere.

I agree completely because you’re much too stupid to qualify. Be thankful breathing is an involuntary reflex, otherwise you’d die.

The same white people who demand that blacks and Indians “move on from the past” are more than happy to live in the past themselves and bring back many of the hackneyed, offensive reminders of the bad old days–like Chief Noc-A-Homa.

It’s simple white people: if you’re going to go back in time, so is everyone else.

I will be honest, white guy here, and no I don’t understand the issue. To me it seems that most teams wish to have a powerful mascot to represent themselves, I would be honor to have something represent my past. The only thing I could claim a little bit of would be the vikings. I don’t know are their white people mad about that name or the celtics? All I know growing up “and I’m showing my age” playing cowboys and Indians, I always wanted to be the Indian because I thought they were bad a**.

I think the Braves need to omit this logo. I can see where it would be offensive just as the Cleveland Indian’s Chief Wahoo is offensive. The thing about the Braves is that they used classic American Indian objects vice a person’s characture. That’s why they avoided much controversy. I mean it’s silly to oppose a tomahawk!

Nothing quite like watching a bunch of southern sports fans discuss a controversial social issue. You really have to sift through all the barely-literate, threatening and just mean comments to find any thoughts of remote value.

It’s funny when someone tries to prove something isn’t bigoted or racist by name-calling and knocking entire social groups or cultures. Okay, maybe it’s not funny. Just say I’m prejudiced against folks who can’t have a decent conversation.

I personally like the hat. But I’m surprised they decided to use it (even if it’s just for batting practice) considering the organization has been trying to tone down on the NA stuff for years. I don’t want any negative attention to be brought to our organization so I feel it’d have been best to have just avoided this issue altogether. I’m seeing a lot of negativity on sports blogs surrounding the hat and Atlanta isn’t exactly the best city to be inviting unnecessary racial controversies.

Also, I don’t remember who said it but I read it earlier in the thread: There is a reason there are no Native American tribes near Turner Field (anymore). Read a book, jerk.

I agree with the guy who said ugadawg30 is a moron. He keeps posting stupid crap that he obviously thinks is funny, but there is no way anyone with the emotional maturity would laugh. And he doesn’t know what a metrosexual looks like. seashell necklace? That ain’t metro buddy, and that ain’t no lady you just walked out of the bathroom with. That’s called full-blown AIDS.
I’m still laughing about the “t-shirts with whales on them” comment. I don’t know why; it’s really not that funny, but it was appropriate for ugadawg30, who probably lives in his parent’s basement and fills out applications for two-year colleges all day.

Yeah bubba, you and about six dozen other “part Indians” have piped in. Everybody is part Indian and everybody loves the racist N.A. stereotyping. You silly gits simply think the way you are told to think. That’s what TV is for.

“If people are going to complain about a logo on a cap, why don’t the bird lovers complain about the Cardinals and Orioles on those uniforms. ”

Because Cardinals and Orioles do not define human races. That inane comment makes about as much sense as the rest.
