‘Screaming indian’ logo returning to Braves gear

ESPN’s Uni Watch blog unveiled the upcoming baseball season’s new batting practice hats.

Among the most notable new designs is the Braves’ cap, which includes the screaming indian logo that has not been a part of the Braves’ uniform since 1989. The new cap features the yelling brave in red stitching on a blue rimmed hat.

In 2012, the Braves introduced an “alternate home” uniform that was similar to what the team wore when the franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. The cream-colored threads did not feature a tomahawk nor the screaming indian. The left sleeve of the new jersey has a crossed tomahawk instead of the screaming indian logo that appeared on the 1966 jerseys.

What do you think of the new Brave batting practice hat?

  • I like it, may even buy it (73%, 3,318 Votes)
  • Couldn't care less. Go (insert favorite team here)! (18%, 813 Votes)
  • I'm offended (9%, 424 Votes)

The retro look is not popular among those who object to the use of Native American symbol or names in sports, including Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas who said of the new look:

Last year the Braves conspicuously avoided using their “screaming Indian” logo as a sleeve patch on their retro alternate jersey — a welcome move for those of us who oppose the appropriation of Native American imagery in sports. Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn’t been permanently mothballed. Disappointing. Grade: F

What are your feelings? Will you be buying the new hat, or do you object?

(Please keep the conversation clean and cordial. Christmas may be over, but the big man is always watching.)

As a part Indian, I am proud for them use the word BRAVE. That a describing verb and to my ancestors character and I love for sports teams to use that. I love the hat and will buy it if I can.

“The answer is similar. The Patent and Trademark Office through the Lanham Act does not offer trademark protection to offensive marks. Clearly this mark is offensive – in the same way that the Washington Redskins moniker is offensive, as a matter of law. (Google it up, dummy)”

The US Court of Appeals overturned the original trial court and protected the logos of the Washington Redskins. The Supreme Court refused to review the appeal. The Redskins logos are protected by law.

That hat is too fancy.
Braves fans need to serve the Lord with modesty and solemnity.
I would prefer a plain blue hat with no logo or maybe a blue hat with a red bill and a silhouette charicature of Tim Tebow on the front.

I guess as long as we have the nation’s capital’s NFL team still called the REDSKINS, the rednecks will still believe screaming Native American racist symbols are ok. Imagine a similar image of an African screaming savage on the caps. Wouldn’t happen in a million years. Political correctness is joke and a sham. Nobody with a brain buys into it, nor do they sit and watch the crushing bore of a “sport” called baseball.

May your lame team continue to lose and lose. I love how people have turned this into a political discussion. I also love how the results of the election hurt you right wingers so much that you have to talk about it over and over. Again, may your Braves continue to LOSE!!!!

I think people today just look for things to complain about.. My great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee indian, and I do not find this offensive. If people are going to complain about a logo on a cap, why don’t the bird lovers complain about the Cardinals and Orioles on those uniforms. People need to get a life. I love my country, I love my God and I love my Braves baseball…

Ah! Yes!!

The obligatory, “it’s the off season, and I have nothing better to do with my time” person that does not KNOW the history of the Braves, WILL NOT do his research, into the logo, and COULD CARE LESS who HE offends with HIS remarks. Take your comments elsewhere, for those of us who truly are ATLANTA BRAVES fans, don’t care what you think. And I’ll be buying the hat, when it’s available.

Thanks,

I have Cherokee and Blackfoot blood in me. Had a relative that was a Cherokee Chief on a reservation. Still have relatives on a Cherokee reservation. Had relatives on the trail of tears. Had relatives discriminated against becuase of their Indian blood. Oh, sorry, was I supposed to be PC and say Native American? The emblem does not offend me at all. Then again, I grew up a long time ago and quit being so easily offended, especially over such silly, trivial little things.

“I’m more offended by the jerseys with “Los” whatever on them. This is the USA not Mexico or some other South American country!”

The problem is, we white folks don’t count to the masters of political correctness. Anyone can do things to offend white people (especially those from the South) all day long and it doesn’t matter. Offending white people is almost a sport to various ethnic and political groups. Noone ever acknowledges that white Europeans were once slaves themselves. But we’re supposed to tip toe around making sure not to offend anyone else because of things that happened hundreds of years ago. And when we do, watch out, your whole life is about to be trashed (see Rocker, John) and turned upside down. Then the same offended people will sit around and laugh because they got another “dumb ignorant redneck”.

Mark me down for one of these hats, I’ll wear it proudly as a Braves fan. If your mind is so small that you think it makes me racist, you probably ought to spend some time looking in the mirror.

As a proud descendant of American Indian indians, I am happy to see the sports organizations that continue to use my heritage to represent their teams. I was disheartened back when the NCAA and its panel of white men decided for my people that references to American Indians were offensive and forced colleges to change their mascots. As far as I’m concerned, if you are offended and are not an American Indian, your opinion doesn’t count. Being a lifelong Braves fan, I’ll be the first in line when the new hats and t-shirts show up in stores. If you’re offended, GFY! Otherwise, Go Braves!

I am part native american indian and have zero issues with the use of these psuedo stereotype images. A brave is just a brave. A chief is just a chief. A viking is still a viking, a patriot is still a patriot whether it is a sports team or a cultural heritage club. Reading more into it than that is hyper sensitivity. Get over yourself.

Would I feel different if I was fully practicing the rituals and customs of any tribe, maybe but I doubt it. In general, the various tribes only took on the combative persona stereotyped by hollywood AFTER they were attacked or displaced as the native land holders. There are countless examples of peaceful coexistence for years and only when explorer, colonist, and settlers began to forcibly take lands did the combative and defensive traits become evident. …for good reasons and with complete justification.

Maybe allowing the sports teams proper use would help those who are ignorant to better appreciate and respect the sacrifices made by native americans when their land was stolen and their culture displaced by white society.

I have no shame in who I am or the mix of heritages in my famly lines.

Of course, the reason I love the logo is because I’m white, hate everyone who isn’t white, and like to mock everyone else by putting images of their fierce warriors on my sports teams uniforms.

We seriously need to rethink the whole universal suffrage proposition. There needs to be some minimum level of rationality to be permitted engagement in the public sphere.
