‘Screaming indian’ logo returning to Braves gear

ESPN’s Uni Watch blog unveiled the upcoming baseball season’s new batting practice hats.

Among the most notable new designs is the Braves’ cap, which includes the screaming indian logo that has not been a part of the Braves’ uniform since 1989. The new cap features the yelling brave in red stitching on a blue rimmed hat.

In 2012, the Braves introduced an “alternate home” uniform that was similar to what the team wore when the franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. The cream-colored threads did not feature a tomahawk nor the screaming indian. The left sleeve of the new jersey has a crossed tomahawk instead of the screaming indian logo that appeared on the 1966 jerseys.

What do you think of the new Brave batting practice hat?

  • I like it, may even buy it (73%, 3,318 Votes)
  • Couldn't care less. Go (insert favorite team here)! (18%, 813 Votes)
  • I'm offended (9%, 424 Votes)

Total Voters: 4,554

The retro look is not popular among those who object to the use of Native American symbol or names in sports, including Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas who said of the new look:

Last year the Braves conspicuously avoided using their “screaming Indian” logo as a sleeve patch on their retro alternate jersey — a welcome move for those of us who oppose the appropriation of Native American imagery in sports. Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn’t been permanently mothballed. Disappointing. Grade: F

What are your feelings? Will you be buying the new hat, or do you object?

(Please keep the conversation clean and cordial. Christmas may be over, but the big man is always watching.)

I could care less because the Braves suck, and will suck again! The state of Georgia is more interested in football then baseball.

I think women are being killed by their husbands, children are being killed by evil psychopaths, firemen are being ambushed (WTH?) and who give a flying you-know-what about a freakin mascot! Grab some priorities and find something worthy to talk about! As I’ve said before most of the people raising a ruckus about this that and the other has never got off their arse and marched anywhere for anything!!!

Being “politically correct” and “sissies” have been an issue long before Obama – who has nothing to do with the issue at hand. So as one of “his goons” I suggest that you take a chair and sit on one of the legs…with no lube.

Political/cultural concerns aside, that is one ugly hat. Furthermore, I don’t know why the team would want to return to anything connected with the franchis’s “bad old days.” Yes, there was 1969, but we were a laughingstock for most of the next 22 years. I remember it all too well and don’t want to be reminded.

I think the retro look is great with or without the Screaming Brave logo. When I see the old logo, the history of Native Americans doesn’t enter my mind. Is it suppose too? We are talking about a sports team here, not the plight of (some) Native Americans. I know we are not suppose to forget the past but come on, lets move on.

Disappointing. Those of you dismissing this as political correctness run amok should do some research into the psychological impact of caricatures, particularly on the Native American population. I think many would be surprised at the underlying effect. The Braves should have left this on the shelf, it’s a relic from a less learned age.

Racism issue aside, it’s aesthetically ugly and muddy from a design perspective. Also, it has no connection to the city of Atlanta: the depiction is of a Sauk not a Cherokee. Difficult to understand why they brought this back other than they are at the bottom of the merchandising barrel. I would have preferred a refined feather from the 70s sleeve, and I’m sure those offended by this image would be less so by that one.

How sad that this question is even brought up in a society who politicizes everything. It’s part of tradition and the history of the game I see no problem with it. The fact that this would even be called into question is pathetic.

Go USA(mnesia)- As a history teacher you need to try something else to make your point because your history analogy is way off. Hitler had no need to look to America for any ideas with all that Europe provided him in their history. Now take a deep breath and go play with sharp objects.
Mellowman- Trying to eliminate all traces of factual history does not erase the history itself. That logo could be a ‘cheering’ Indian just as well as a ’screaming’ one. It`s typical of weak minded, no logic liberals to want to change an image as if that actually changes the facts of life. Now take a deep breath and go play with sharp objects.

There will always be those who pretend to be offended by the indian logo or the team name Braves. Remember the ‘95 & ‘96 World Series in Atlanta when Fulton County Stadium had to give a space to the so called group of Indians to protest our team name? I look more like an Indian than any of those in that little roped off space with the megahorns spouting off at all of coming to the games. Stupid, just plain stupid.
There are more important things going on in our country and the world than to worry about than a logo on a cap……geeeeezzzzzz!

“How does a newspaper article get away with a poll asking if people “Could Care Less?” The proper phrase is “Couldn’t Care Less…”

Yes,I’m amazed. I often hear educated adults use this phrase “Could care less.” It’s so basic but get by people because they hear it their whole lives….stated incorrectly. My first college English professor began the semester by giving us a ‘hit list’ of often-used words/phrases that were either slang or popular phrases/words that were used out of context. He made it clear that if any of these showed up in class assignments that it would receive an automatic grade of F. It made an impression, to say the least. Of course, one of these happened to be “could care less,” which is the exact opposite of what you actually want to say.

Why don’t the whiners just leave ? We know the answer to that don’t we ?

No other nation is open to so many. No other nation has done so much to rectify its past errors.
I agree with the comments from others that Indian names and symbols are not used to denegrate but to recognize with pride as part of our history. Notherners don’t complain because of the nickname
“Yankees” do they ? Of course not.

Yeah, which is exactly the reason the club and its 20-something marketing nitwits should just stay away from the stupid expressions they place on Indian faces. Why put the club in a position to defend this regardless of what side you’re on? Exactly why is this worth it in the first place….to prove you can? As a transplant and moderate Braves fan I can say that the rest of the baseball world marvels at the chopping and chanting at games. I’ve always tried to look at these symbols as “Honoring” these Native Americans, and not as begrading them. Maybe a royalty could be set up where they share in the monetary rewards of these sales. I certainly feel like these native americans deserve our honor and respect because this was their land first. My grandmother was part Cherokee, so I have a great deal of love in my heart for her people….

I don’t like it. I think we do need to consider how something like this might offend others. But more than that, I just think it looks stupid. I prefer the A for Atlanta. Those who think that being inconsiderate and brash is cool are probably spending more time picking the lint out of the belly button and swilling beer than doing any higher level thinking. Further, just because you have a drop of some Native American blood in you doesn’t make you a spokesman for anyone besides yourself, so you get over yourself. So, my vote is I don’t like because I don’t like it.

My mom’s side of the family is COMPLETELY screwed up! My grandfather’s father was part Mohawk and African-American, and my grandmother’s mother was part Blackfoot and African-American. But my grandfather’s father married and great-grandmother who Irish and African-American, and my grandmother’s mother married my great-grandfather who was “White” and Portuguese.

My generation is the first generation in my family that comes from “African-Americans” simply because my dad’s side has no history (that we know of) of biracial ancestors. Since I just claim to be part Barack Obama and Tiger Woods I don’t know what to get offended of.

Why the club continues to find ways to bring this up is amazing. Does anyone in that organization pay attention to what is going on or are they just all fat, dumb, and happy?
