‘Screaming indian’ logo returning to Braves gear

ESPN’s Uni Watch blog unveiled the upcoming baseball season’s new batting practice hats.

Among the most notable new designs is the Braves’ cap, which includes the screaming indian logo that has not been a part of the Braves’ uniform since 1989. The new cap features the yelling brave in red stitching on a blue rimmed hat.

In 2012, the Braves introduced an “alternate home” uniform that was similar to what the team wore when the franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. The cream-colored threads did not feature a tomahawk nor the screaming indian. The left sleeve of the new jersey has a crossed tomahawk instead of the screaming indian logo that appeared on the 1966 jerseys.

What do you think of the new Brave batting practice hat?

  • I like it, may even buy it (73%, 3,318 Votes)
  • Couldn't care less. Go (insert favorite team here)! (18%, 813 Votes)
  • I'm offended (9%, 424 Votes)

The retro look is not popular among those who object to the use of Native American symbol or names in sports, including Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas who said of the new look:

Last year the Braves conspicuously avoided using their “screaming Indian” logo as a sleeve patch on their retro alternate jersey — a welcome move for those of us who oppose the appropriation of Native American imagery in sports. Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn’t been permanently mothballed. Disappointing. Grade: F

What are your feelings? Will you be buying the new hat, or do you object?

(Please keep the conversation clean and cordial. Christmas may be over, but the big man is always watching.)

A deal was struck between the Atlanta Braves and the little known Native American Nation of Profitable Vices which allows the MLB club to use the “screaming Indian” in exchange for a casino at Turner Field.

I’m torn. As a designer, I am offended by the poor use of the design (the colors for one). Its a legendary illustration and considering the front office had to have anticipated this controversy, its a waste to have not done the original justice

That said, it speaks broadly about the front office of the braves. 1. That they would use this logo now when they didn’t last year and 2. That they would use it so poorly.

There are so many elements now that they could have chosen from, the lowercase a being my favorite. (My favorite braves hat is the riverstone little a I bought last year).

I can also see how some people are offended by it. Everyone has their pet issue that they get all bent out of shape over. The keep christ in christmas folks don’t seem to care when they offend other people. I think the organization made a calculation, they assumed that their fans don’t care about offending people, so let’s sell them a hat.

I think a lot of Georgians need to grow up and realize that you live in a bigger world than your deadend 9-5, wife and kids, suburban existence. You should probably get out of the state and see the world and stop calling liberals “crying sissies”. They make just as much money as you do, and they pay just as much in taxes as you do, even though Faux has convinced you otherwise, and they go to plenty of Braves games. Obama & politics simply has nothing to do with this. Its about the ongoing abuse and neglect of Native Americans who were lied to, stolen from and massacred because of an errant belief in manifest destiny.

Much like the rebel flag, we should consider relegating native american mascots to the past and let’s march on into the future.

I think if the Indians really understood how most of us feel about their culture they would see respect. I love Indian culture and respect it. I think the Braves name and symbols are a sign of ultimate respect. I think a”lot of southern culture should return. Its both black and white. Sad , but these politically correct times were in are going to destroy it all in the long run. We all need to loosen up. Have fun people.

“Could Care Less” is widely viewed and accepted American colloquialism and is considered as sarcasm and hyperbole. One could care less, but does not choose to waste the effort on the matter. In the US, the two phrases are used interchangeably.

The Indian schtik is old. The whole chop stuff makes Brave’s fans look like idiots. And what a joke that some claim to be part Indian and pronounce that this is proof that nobody should be offended. This Indian stuff with the expressions is a waste of time and energy. Why do the marketing nitwits continue to bring these up; tone the stupid expressions down and leave them down. What a bunch of idiots. Now the biggots and idiots can run out ad buy a bunch to show people that they can. Have fun.

I am part Indian (isn’t everyone?). No really I am. I am not offended. I’ve always found it a source of pride. A team would not use the name or image of something that didn’t evoke toughness or superiority or anything in a negative light. I’m proud of that screaming warrior and I also with they would bring back Chief Knockahoma.

The fact that so many people say they are not offended shows just how shallow “American’s” are. This was NOT our land. We came here and killed its native people.. It’s no different than say Russia invading some country and doing the same. Funny how people who have the good life convieniently forget about the past.

I wish they would bring back Chief Knockahoma (sp) and Princess Winalotta (sp), they were great to inspire enthusiasm.

What about the Indians logo? Bigger than that, what about the WASHINGTON REDSKINS? You gonna change their name and logo too? This is a bunch of hooha and is not actually a controversy; its a bunch of idiots in the media who hate Atlanta and the Braves and are trying to make a story out of N-O-T-H-I-N-G!! They need to GET OVER THEMSELVES very quickly. This is the DUMBEST thing I’ve ever seen anyone get “offended” over. I can’t WAIT to get one, to hell with these no talent assclowns who are making this a story. Wow. Stop getting offended over EVERYTHING!!!

It’s wrong. I used to not understand why it was wrong, till I put some though into it. The closest things we have to this in reference to white people, are , “The Fighting Irish of Nortre Dame.” But the history of that mascot is a little racist as well, in reference to Irish being drunk, rowdy fighters. We don’t have mascots that refer to English, French, White, Blacks, Chinese, Asian etc. Why is it that it’s okay for us to have mascots which denigrate Native Culture, but not any of the other groups I referenced? It’s a little thing…but in the grand scheme of things…wouldn’t it be best to leave ethnic mascots out of the picture?
P.S. I too am Native on both sides.

For you to use “again” would imply that I have already received an “F” in English, which, for the record, could not be further from the truth. While I am in no way a big fan of the AJC, they are using an accepted phrase in the US. You may not accept and use the phrase, but do not belittle someone for using it. It can be found in dictionaries. Although the two phrases are not literally the same, figuratively, they are equal.

I find this symbol reprehensible and totally insensitive to Native American sensibilities. I would hope John Schuerholz would rethink using this atrocious caricature. Uplifting the spirits of Braves’ fans at the expense of our Native American brethren isn’t the way to go in this age.

I don’t like it because the cap color is wrong. A Braves Cap should be blue and red. I’ve been a Braves fan since the 1950s. I loved the uniforms they wore in Milwaukee. If the cap goes to blue with a red bill, then I’ll like it.

Steve Bob

First of all, it’s not a “blue rimmed hat.” It’s a blue hat or cap. I don’t see a rim. While I agree that red and blue don’t go together, it’s not the worst design I’ve ever seen. But what I dislike the most is the furor over depicting a “screaming Indian” on the cap. The so called “Screaming Indian” is a depiction of a “Brave” captured at moment that he is giving his war cry. It’s not demeaning. It’s a celebration of the well documented warrior spirit common to native Americans.
