‘Screaming indian’ logo returning to Braves gear

ESPN’s Uni Watch blog unveiled the upcoming baseball season’s new batting practice hats.

Among the most notable new designs is the Braves’ cap, which includes the screaming indian logo that has not been a part of the Braves’ uniform since 1989. The new cap features the yelling brave in red stitching on a blue rimmed hat.

In 2012, the Braves introduced an “alternate home” uniform that was similar to what the team wore when the franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. The cream-colored threads did not feature a tomahawk nor the screaming indian. The left sleeve of the new jersey has a crossed tomahawk instead of the screaming indian logo that appeared on the 1966 jerseys.

What do you think of the new Brave batting practice hat?

  • I like it, may even buy it (73%, 3,318 Votes)
  • Couldn't care less. Go (insert favorite team here)! (18%, 813 Votes)
  • I'm offended (9%, 424 Votes)

Total Voters: 4,554

The retro look is not popular among those who object to the use of Native American symbol or names in sports, including Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas who said of the new look:

Last year the Braves conspicuously avoided using their “screaming Indian” logo as a sleeve patch on their retro alternate jersey — a welcome move for those of us who oppose the appropriation of Native American imagery in sports. Unfortunately, it turns out that the logo hasn’t been permanently mothballed. Disappointing. Grade: F

What are your feelings? Will you be buying the new hat, or do you object?

(Please keep the conversation clean and cordial. Christmas may be over, but the big man is always watching.)

I love the old Braves uniforms. I could care less that someone is offended over the new logo. Too many people are offended by insignificant things that have no bearing on their daily life. The offended can watch another less offensive team. Go BRAVES!!!!!!!

This is great is it’s a part of the teams history. I don’t get the issue here. I’m Irish-the Fighting Irish logo doesn’t bother me. So why is this offesive to snobby NewYorkers and supposedly native Americans. I think it’s a salute to their honor, integrity, and toughness.

I am 1/4 Cherokee Indian and I have never understood how peolpe are so offended. To me I think its great to show Native Amercians as the great warriors and leaders we are. Whats next, bears being offended because the are being depicted as “agessive?’

Paul Lucus is a liberal, New York City whiner. He feels all sport nicknames with Indian or offensive reference should be banded.

I prefer the tomahawk as the logo, but if you like the screaming indian you have that right.

I am not offended but I can understand those who might be. Why dredge up something we have moved beyond. Those early Braves uniforms were nothing to be nostalgic over.

I think it’s Great. being a Native American – I feel it’s not a slap in the face to Native People – but a positive representation. – If you are offended by the use of a Image of a Native American as a mascot – You are only looking for something to offend you. Take Pride and realize what it represents.

Interesting how most of the people saying things like, “In general, if something offends others, bonus!”, are the first to scream about being offended should someone dare disparage “the south” or “christians” or “GOP”. Hypocrites.

I think obama and his legion of goons has created such a nation of sissies. You can’t even give constructive help without it being called racist thanks to the obama goons. These same goons can’t even afford tickets to the games to see these hats that offends them, even though there aren’t any Indian tribes in the vicinity of Turner Field. If it bothers you shut your hole unless you have a financial stake in the matter. Go read about the indians rather than protest a hat

I am not offended by this because I am not of Native American descent . But as usual most people cannot see the other persons view of this. I might be offended if my land was stolen and my ancestors were killed by gov’t sponsored genocide and some wore a goofy caricature that is supposed to represent me and my people. The Braves would dare put a Sambo looking caricature that would offend black people because it is already unsafe to go to a game downtown. Unfortunately no one has killed off any of the ignorant, redneck ancestors of today’s average, low I.Q., ignorant, trailer dwelling, Atlanta Braves fan.

Lucas is a jerk about a number of issues, and doesn’t really tolerate opinions that differ from his own. Basically, his belief is that if a group has been oppressed in the past, then you have to get their approval to use the name/logo. So the FSU Seminoles is Ok because the Seminole tribe approved. But who would the Braves or Chiefs get approval from? Oh, and Lucas is a big Mets fan too………

The hat is a good looking hat. Frankly, the Braves have always sold merchandise that included the “screaming” Indian head. The team has not worn it on uniforms for 23 years, but it has been sold on hats, t-shirts and other memorabilia.

In the vein of this article, when will they stop selling pictures of New York with the Twin Towers? When will they stop selling posters saying, “The South Will Rise Again”? When will we stop taking Christmas out of the Christmas season? The list goes on. The phrase “Good morning” could be offensive and subsequently outlawed at the rate we are going. Y’all have a nice day and please don’t have me arrested for wishing you a good day. :)

When I was a kid, the Braves were terrible. Some of my best memories were at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, sitting next to my Dad, watching the Braves lose to every team in the league. But NOW apparently the PC police say that the Braves need to “try” and “win” games. Who asked them!!??!? I’m ashamed that the Braves have turned their back on their heritage of losing. I guess that’s the “modern” world we live in. I wish thing could stay the way they were, forever.

How does a newspaper article get away with a poll asking if people “Could Care Less?” The proper phrase is “Couldn’t Care Less…” If you could care less, then it means that you actually care and there are degrees of caring less that you can still achieve. You all write for a living…you would think you would grasp a simple phrase.

I liked the old multi-colored image of the “Screaming Brave” better; but this one is okay.

I really don’t understand what all the hoopla is about. Mascots are almost always chosen in tribute to their progenitors, not to denigrate them.

I honestly believe it is simply the professional protesters and agitators who start these things. Then empy-headed, utterly moronic media and other left wing types jump on the bandwagon. The liberals are nothing if not lock step conformists with the latest cause du jour.

Yeah, the trail of tears was awesome. If you like the symbol so much why don’t you take the crooked route to Oklahoma, watching your own children die and then get back to me on how great it is to trivialize genocide. Where do you think Hitler got the idea to eliminate an entire race of people? Look no further than the American treatment of the Native Americans.
