Former Falcons defensive end Ray Edwards is close to joining the Seattle Seahawks roster, according to ProFootball Talk.

The 10-5 Seahawks worked out Edwards earlier this week and are expected to sign the free agent by today.

The Falcons released Edwards in November. Edwards, who was signed last year to a five-year, $27.5 million contract, played 25 games for the Falcons and had 3.5 sacks. The Falcons are still on the hook for $1.05 million of his $3 million salary for this season.

The Falcons could face Seattle, who have clinched a playoff spot and would play the Washington Redskins in the Wild Card round, in the NFC Divisional Playoff.

Go Figure, why would Seattle bring him in. Must be for insurance only. He will never see the field with that defense. He couldn’t make plays for the ATL how’s he going to make plays for that Seahawk defense.

I beg Seattle to sign and play this guy. Falcons O will be licking their chops if they see him on the field.

My guess…they are not signing him to play….they are signing him for what he knows about the Falcons defense who may be the Seahawks opponent..

Screwed football move on Seahawks part. Totally agree with CC. Its obvious they are getting him in anticipation of facing the Falcons. For Informational Purposes Only. But think about it, Ray Edwards had his best years in Minnesota when he was NOT THE MAN and had Jared Allen on the other side along with other good pressure lineman. In Seattle, he would be back to his comfort zone.

I just wish the Falcons did to him what Tampa bay did with Keshawn, deactivated him and NOT allow him to go anywhere or play for anybody. Could come back to haunt us.

The good news is that Edwards was more worried about his modeling career than playing football when he was with the Falcons so there’s probably very little he can tell the Seahawks about the Falcons’ defensive schemes and calls that they couldn’t pick up from tape.

Agree with cc and Falcons4Eva. The only reason they picked him is to get information. I hope our coaches realize this and use it to our advantage. Maybe we could keep the same defensive alignment but change the way we cover out of that alignment. In other words, create counter confusion among their offense.

He’s a traitor in every sense of the word. He didn’t make an impact with the Falcons. And the only reason they want to pick up his contract is for information…

Oh, god, I”M SCARED. Ray Ray may get his revenge on the poor Falcons. Folks, if we let a 5 foot 10 rookie QB come into the Dome and beat the Falons, I’m done, I’m quitting, F the Falcons, F Blank, F the new and worthless stadium. If 5th year Ryan and 5th Mike Smith and 100 year Nolan and 100 year Koeter allow a 5ft. 10inch ROOKIE QB to beat us in the Dome it will irrepairably damage this francise in the nations eyes and may become the worst loss in the history of the NFL playoffs which the organization as a whole will NEVER recover from. What the F… doe pretty boy speedo freaky Ray Edwards have to do with the price of rice. If the O Line can’t get it up for the NFL championship and are awed by a rookie 5ft 10inch QB and the defense can’t get up to squash his rookie butt then a whole team of Ray Edwards playing 22 positions ain’t going to make a hill of beans. Same goes for the Redskins and RG3. Nuf sed. I think I’ve splained myself rather cearly.

What in the name of peace is Edwards supposed to know about the Falcon D that Seatle can’t learn from films, etc.? The answer is nothing! They need him for depth, and if the teams play his contribution will be exactly what it was to the Falcons. Nothing!

With Chris Clemons we have one side of the line covered. Now for the other side we have Bruce Irvin. He is great but lacks size. Edwards would provide a bigger force on the other side to match up with larger linemen. Not a bad move.

Seahawks are not using an active roster spot just to get info about a team they MIGHT play in the playoffs. If that’s what they were after, they’d toss some cash under the table and go after castoffs from every other playoff team.

They’re taking a fresh look at a guy they think hasn’t played up to his potential lately because that’s how you get great players at bargain prices. Same thing they did with Chris Clemons and others.

I agree that this is just a move for information on the Falcons Defense stratagies. I think the Seahawks are thinking way to far in advance because I believe they will get beat in the first round on the road. If they do make it to Atlanta, the Falcons offensive line will be out to smack him in the mouth as he didn’t show up for our team. Bring on the Seahawks, I will enjoy watching that rookie QB get confused from the new sceams he will see. Falcons will roll over the west coast team…

Pete Carroll will always come up short in big NFL games. Insecure men do things like run up scores. Mike Smith will get his first playoff win, maybe against Seattle, just as long as he figures out Michael Turner is no longer The Burner.

Seahawks beat the Pats, Chicago (in Chicago, and the Bears didn’t “suck” until that loss btw), Cowboys, Packers (yeah, yeah “Fail Mary” but that’s how the ‘Hawks lost SB XL against Pittsburgh, and they didn’t suddenly give the Lombardi trophy to them, the league just “apologized”), the Niners were manhandled, and only the Pats scored 50+ on Buffalo this year…who else but the Pats and Seahawks have scored over 50 points TWICE this year? Why didn’t Atlanta score 50 on that terrible Raiders team? Or 50 against the horrendous Saints D? Or 50 even ONCE? They are good, but don’t be so sure that they are a definite SB team. The only possible teams in the NFC that are truly concerned about the Falcons are the Vikings or Cowboys (or Giants if they somehow make it in). The Pack, Niners, Seahawks, Redskins (if they make it) or even the Bears (if they make it) won’t be destroyed by them, and could very well blow them out.

Eagles Fans (When they played the Dog Killer)
And now all of a sudden that their teams: (Saints, Eagles) and any other team besides the Falcons, now they pop up on the Seahawks jock strap for a sniff….

CFB fan, you cherry pick your facts… from early in the season of a rookie QB
SeaHags are 7-2 against teams over .500, and 3-1 against teams in the top 10.
As a matter of fact, they have BEAT every team in the Top 10 they have played.
They have THE BEST defense in the NFL right now, average giving up only 15.5 points a game.
And in the last 3 weeks, that 5′-10″ Rookie QB you are all snearing at, has led his team to scoring avg 50 points per game, icluding trashing the previously #1 49′ers last weekend…. and the 49′ers had the previous #1 defense, and that shorty rookie QB shredded them!!! He is one TD shy of Peyton Manning’s Rookie record…. sneer all you like oon your blog, but good luck on the field!!!!!

It’s also not our first bust we’ve cycled through the trash to pick up. No one wanted Clemons but he fit our scheme. Remember FAT Mike Williams? Got a good year out of him. Also, Lendale White? Traded for him on the cheap, tried him out, didn’t fit, dropped him. Hell, Lynch was on his way out in Buffalo too and we got him for a 4th & 5th round pick (actually beneficial trade to both sides). Browner was a CFL reject. Sherman was like the 800th DB picked up in the draft. Robinson was dropped by the Niners. The list goes on… We will get Edwards for really cheap because you Falcons are still on the hook for him this year and next as part of the guaranteed $11 million. If he works out, great move. If he doesn’t, no big deal and it didn’t cost us much.
