UGA’s Jones just misses Lombardi Award

Georgia’s Jarvis Jones didn’t win the Lombardi Award Wednesday night in Houston, finishing behind Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o for the honor going to the nation’s best lineman or linebacker.

Now the two linebackers will head to Orlando Thursday to see who wins the Bednarik Award for defensive player of the year.

Georgia's Jan. 1 game against Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl could be Jarvis Jones's final college game.

Georgia's Jan. 1 game against Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl could be Jarvis Jones's final college game.

Te’o has more tackles (103) than Jones (77) this season and more interceptions (7) than Jones (1). But Jones has more tackles for losses (22.5 to 5.5), more sacks (12.5 to 1.5) and more forced fumbles (7 to 0). Both recovered two fumbles.

Jones, Te’o, Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones and South Carolina defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney were the four finalists for the Lombardi Award, and Jones, Te’o, and Clowney are the final three up for the Bednarik.

Te’o has already won the Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player and the Butkus Award for the nation’s top linebacker.

He’s also one of three finalists for the Heisman Trophy, along with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein. College football’s top honor will be bestowed Saturday.

Jarvis Jones was named SEC defensive player of the year and All-SEC first team by The Associated Press Monday.

JJ is a pass rusher and Te’o is a middle LB. Stat’s are for losers. Te’o is a great player and a first round draft choice just like JJ. He just happens to be on an undefeated team at ND. Both will be great in NFL.

George, agreed on both being great players. The only stat that surprised me was that Te’o had no forced fumbles while Jones had seven. I imagine that’s a result of Jones hitting QBs.

T’eo’s higher tackle count is just function of ND’s DL letting runners get into the 2nd level. Expect Teo to have a lot of tackles in the BCS Championship Game while Bama keeps getting 1st downs. He’s the next Keith Brookingseseseses!

They are both game changers. but I am glad we have Jarvis rather then T’eo. Jarvis saved at least two games (Missouri and UF) and probably more for us! Thank you Jarvis for being a DGD! And the media wants to know why the SEC hates Notre Dame so much. When they have a good team like they do this year there are so many Catholics in the Northeast where all the big media Head Quarters are located that with no team worth anything in the Big East or the Big 10 , all they have is Notre Dame. They didn’t know when Notre Dame scheduled Oklahoma, Southern Cal , Michigan and Michigan State that none of them where going to be great this year and without scheduling one of the 6 SEC that ended in the top 10 the only game that really gave any indication about how good Notre Dame was in 2012 was the Stanford team that really beat Notre Dame if the officials had made the correct call when the replay clearly showed Stanford scored before the running back’s knee was down.
Te’o is a great Linebacker but all he has is a bunch of tackles where Jones slaughtered Te’o in the categories that really make a difference in a game such as sack’s , forced fumbles and tackle for loss. Te’o will probably get all the awards but we will see whose accomplishment meant the most after the Pro draft. If Te’o get’s drafted before Jones then I guess they had it right but I bet Jones go’s ahead of Te’o and that will prove that the Catholic influence gave the awards to the wrong person.because of bias and hatred for anybody in the SEC. Either way the difference as to who is better is so small any bias would put Te’o in front where for example Manziel will win the Heisman because his accomplishment was so much more.

There have been 10 LB and DE in the SEC in the past 10 years with stats as good as or better than Te’o, some of those played on BCS champ teams and some played on 11 and 12 win teams and none were even invited to NYC. This is a reward for ND, nothing more. If he played for anyone else he’d get named a little bit but no invite. Jarvis and Clowney are the 2 best defenders in nation, OC have to game plan around both. I’m not sure how much you actually have to game plan around a MLB who cannot rush the passer?

And to the Truth above, Situational Passrushers in the NFL are usually the 2nd highest paid players on most teams behind the QB and in front of the LT and top CB’s of the league.

The other day somebody compared Te’o stats with the stats of former Georgia linebacker Tony Gilbert. They were virtually identical. Assuming this post was true (a big assumption I understand) it tells me Te’o is overrated and definitely benefits from the Notre Dame media lovefest. I don’t recall Gilbert being up for any of these awards, let alone winning them. I bet you could find other solid, but otherwise non-descript, linebackers that could match up with Te’o stat wise too that weren’t up for awards like this. This is why everyone hates Notre Dame.

The lack of turnovers and tackles for a loss tell me that Te’o isn’t very aggressive and kind of lets the game come to him. The word SOFT immediately comes to mind quite frankly. He’s a good football player by good grief, the Heisman? Simply laughable.

I guess the moral of the story is that if you’re a good player and want to win a bunch of awards you need to go to Notre Dame. You’ll be a shoe in.

The Lombardi award “Goes annually to the college football lineman who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi.” So what does this mean? Forget your stats. If the winner is chosen based on the criteria set forth, that the award “honors collegiate lineman who display courage, character and team spirit on and off the gridiron”, it is the voters’ opinion of the character of the player that matters.

As an Alabama fan is is upsetting to see Jarvis Jones falling in second place for all these awards behind Te’o. Yes, he had a great season, but he still wasn’t as disruptive as a force as Jarvis Jones has been all year. Teams had to gameplan around Jarvis Jones, and yet they still couldn’t stop him. Obviously his tackle total would have gone up had he not missed playing time, but hey, that’s football. Te’o plays in the middle of a defense, so therefor he has no choice but to rack up the tackles. I would find it hard to make a compelling case that T’eo is a better defensive player than Jones, and ESPN analyst have seconded that sentiment, and Jones is #1 on most big boards. Like what was said earlier, it’s going to be hard to beat a Notre Dame player with the media love fest for them, especially since they have been irrelevant for the past 20 years with no real results. Still, find me a game where Te’o just dominated and pretty much won a game for the Irish. I can say Jones did that against Missouri and Florida.

All of those responsible took the road of shame to the NFL instead of holding their end of the bargain and playing through their suspension. High caliber players y’all recruit up there in Columbus. And the best part of it all was seeing your sorry players carry Tressel on their shoulders and your weak fan base crying and yelling in praise for the guy that doomed your undefeated season and post season dreams. He was a cheater, and that’s definitely something to honor. Ohio State will do well under Urban Meyer, but y’all aren’t nearly as relevant as you, Kirk Herbstreit, or Jim Delaney want y’all to be. And this from the team whom had a player say he shouldn’t have to go to school, and that he wasn’t recruited to go to class, he was recruited to play ball. I like those high character types y’all are bringing in to pass the torch. Have fun in a mediocre conference that will undoubtedly get drilled this bowl season, much like every bowl season, and next year as well.

The Heisman trophy has nothing to do with the NFL Draft. (Jason White, Eric Crouch, etc…) JJ is obviously a better NFL Prospect simply because the NFL values Pass Rushers more than Inside LBs.Just because JJ is going to get drafted higher doesn’t make him more worthy of these awards. Stats are also a little overrated in these situations. When has Ray Lewis ever led the league in Sacks? By that metric, Julius Peppers has had a better career than Ray Lewis. Te’o is the leader of the top scoring defense in college football that allowed 10 Touchdowns in 12 games, 2 rushing…Georgia Defense got embarrassed by South Carolina and gave up 350 yards on the ground to Alabama.

OPEN MINDED,

You’re right, he does blitz more, hence why his sack totals and tackle for losses are higher, which means he still seizes the opportunity to make a play. He trails by 30 sum odd tackles, missed a couple games, and blitzed himself out of a ton of plays being an outside linebacker. I think his stats are just as amazing as Te’o’s, and he is more of a game changer. Call him a system linebacker, but his stats absolutely obliterate Te’o’s for the chances he gets. So in conclusion, your post and opinion don’t add up to squat. Please respond with more legit logic, and I will then again put you in your place. I’m an Alabama fan, so no biased opinion, just going on the facts here.

Take a poll among D1 QBs and ask them which one they’d rather play against…..

Irishmark,

Yeah, Boston College, Wake Forest, Michigan State, Navy, BYU, Pittsburgh are all tremendous victories. Add in USC’s five losses, Miami’s five losses, Michigan’s four losses and your schedule looks like swiss cheese. I give credit for beating Oklahoma in Norman, but I also feel Oklahoma was a bit overrated this year as well. Stanford is a touchy subject since there is video evidence the call was wrong and that Taylor got in on two plays, 2nd and 4th down. It’s not necessarily tough to be a top defense when you play lackluster opponents that are awful. Your offense is awful, not even ranking in the Top 50, but on top of that you had multiple overtime games to pad your stats, and then you still couldn’t average 28 points a game. Alabama averaged 41 points, Georgia averaged 37. Georgia gave up an average of 18 points a game, Alabama gave up 11 points a game, and Notre Dame gave up 10 points per game. So your comment claiming Notre Dame is just so deserving of all acclaim and awards is as bogus as they come. Both Georgia and Alabama stack up equally on defense and destroy Notre Dame offensively. I am welcome to any facts disproving my argument.

JJ would of won with better coaching….his heart won’t be in the bowl game. He will not risk injury when he has millions waiting for him in the NFL…that goes for all UGA players who await the NFL….Nebraska game worries me because of that…hope it’s not another chance for richt and company to embarrass us in front of a national audience….

I bet Teo never had as many double and triple teams thrown at him as JJ if any. JJ was doubled the whole game vs. Bummer.

Manti’s total tackles stat is a little misleading though. 51 of those 103 tackles were assists. Jarvis has 47 solo tackles while Te’o has 52 solos. Also, Te’o has only managed to crack the top 40 in one major defensive statistic this year, that being int’s of course. However, Jarvis is in the top 3 in THREE different categories. He is #1 in two of those.
