Report: Strong turns down Tennessee job

Does anybody want to coach Tennessee?

The Vols’ search for a head coach will continue as Louisville’s Charlie Strong has reportedly become the latest coach to turn down an offer to succeed Derek Dooley.

Sports Illustrated, citing an anonymous source, is reporting that Louisville and Strong are working on a contract extension that could be announced as early as Thursday.

“It was Charlie’s desire to end this constant speculation and re-commit long-term to Louisville,” the source was quoted as saying.

Strong, the former Florida defensive coordinator, took over the Cardinals program in 2010 and led them to a 10-2 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl against Florida this year.

On Wednesday it was reported that Tennessee offered the job to Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, but Gundy also turned the job down. Earlier speculation had centered on former NFL coach Jon Gruden, but Gruden also said he had no interest in the job.

Tennessee is the last of four SEC schools to fill its coaching vacancy. Kentucky hired Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, Auburn hired Arkansas State head coach Gus Malzahn, and Arkansas hired Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema.

The Vols fired Dooley in November after three years on the job. Dooley was 15-21 overall and 4-7 this year. Other names being mentioned for the job include former Miami and North Carolina coach Butch Davis, current North Carolina coach Larry Fedora and fired Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino.

Gruden was such a pipe dream he never officially rejected it. It would be like an 11th grader sending Aaron Andrews an invitation to be his prom date. It doesn’t even get a response. Somebody chuckles and tosses it in the garbage.

And the beat goes on. First picks turn them down. Again. Seems like they would learn to have someone secured before letting the first one go. This is why the Vols have fallen from national prominence, they are managed so poorly.

Tenn is under HUGE pressure to upgrade to a coach with a resume kids will recognize and actually move the program forward. This is turning into shades of 3 years ago when Dooley said yes after being the 5th or 6th choice. Believe the public list that made the press so far is Gruden,Strong and Gunden.
They will not hire a no name or an assit. Coach IMO. Looks like the guy Fedora might get the nod…..and excite no one………….Would like to hug Richt when I see him in the spring.

So can we assume that since Kirby Smart’s name hasn’t gained any traction for any of the big openings that he either doesn’t want to coach in the SEC or he’s really coach-in-waiting at Bama? Bama is about to play for yet another BCS Championship so I don’t buy that Smart wouldn’t want to be a distraction to the team when a great career opportunity is waiting. Saban would understand too as he already told Smart to not make lateral moves and hold out for a significant move up. The key to being CIW is that Saban must be suggesting to Smart behind closed doors that he’s not going to stick around too much longer if Smart really has his heart set on Bama. Let’s look at recent SEC openings.

1. Florida – Muschamp, the other recent hot property didn’t wait around forever to take over at Texas and appears to be getting results. This job shouldn’t be available anytime soon.

2. UT – Not a peep about Smart other than from people on message boards.

3. Auburn – Gone quickly without a serious peep about Smart.

The only remaining SEC jobs worth considering with Smart’s stock are Bama, UGA, and LSU but those 3 coaches are pretty safe. Smart’s stock isn’t going to get any higher than it is now so is he waiting to take the first job that becomes available from one of these 3 schools?

Tennessee and Kentucky are the two least productive states occupied by the SEC when it comes to high school football players. Tennessee is probably the worst, certainly by the square mile. High school programs in Tennessee are nowhere close to what we have in Georgia, nor in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, or Mississippi. Anyone considering the UT job must be willing to recruit heavily outside the state and not rely on any semi-automatic pipeline within the state to take care of 50% or more of the recruitment pool. That is a time-robbing task when in competition with the mega-powers from the other states mentioned. It will take a lot of money to get a topflight coach to risk his career at UT, and they might be better off pursuing someone off the radar, but potentially a star, like a Bobby Wilder at ODU who can tap the Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia market for players and not demand $3-4 million to do it.

Being a great player on the field doesn’t always translate into being a prime candidate for head coach, anymore than being an assistant head coach does, in some cases.
Peyton could very well step up to the plate and nobody knows one way or the other. If he is going to be one though, he should first learn the position, and the administration of a team, and he would be wise to spend some time, learning the trade as at least a position coach or an assistant on a team. I surely would love to see him back in the SEC in an important position, but he needs to work his way back into it, if he wants to be a successful coach.
Everybody complains about how much the head coaches get paid, but few realize the complexity of the job, and the constant pressure you experience in the position. Fans like to somehow think they could do a decent job, without even understanding anything about the job. It is more about winning a football game.

Next Vols Coach Should Be

December 6th, 2012

Tee Martin should be the Vols next head coach. He is currently the receivers coach at USC after recently coaching running backs at Kentucky. He led the Vols to their National Championship the year after Peyton Manning left. He’s an excellent recruiter and he is building a great coaching resume. UT this is your man…

The tennessee job is just a really bad job right now. The team is in the dumps and is in the strongest conference. Not to mention the administration doesn’t appear to help out much, they admitted the situation was horrible when dooley took over and only gave him 3 years. I wouldn’t be looking at any big name head coaches because you will be dissapointed and it looks bad when you get turned down. That in fact makes the situation looks even worse then it already is. I would be looking for a coordinator, a younger guy if possible. Usually they can recruit a little better and that would be a good place to start.

I think the administration probably thinks the job is better then it really is and will let this drag out. That’s going to kill recruiting and pretty much kill next year so that it can’t even be a rebuilding year.

Even Louisville’s president had stated that he would spend whatever it took to keep strong.

I’d hate to see it, but UT should offer the job to LSU’s John Chavis. He’s been a thorn in the side of Mark Richt many times, and was UT’s DC for years.

Yes we have not won a national championship since 98…. As a university that is proud of our traditions. Facilities that will always be the standards other universities strive to reach. Traditions that many teams have copied over the years….. I know we will rise again and when that day comes I will enjoy my ice tea and saturdays in the fall once again, yet I will not bad mouth other universaties going through trials and tribulations. In his second year he was coach of the year in Virginia. He introduced the hurry-up offense. He put more players in the pros than did UGA during his 3 years there.
