Sports radio talk show host Chuck Oliver said Monday he was guilty of “horrible timing” in asking UGA Coach Mark Richt a question about losing big games after Saturday night’s SEC Championship Game.
Oliver, part of the “Chuck and Chernoff Show” on 680 the Fan, said he used “awful, terrible, wretched, horrid judgment” in posing such a question after Georgia’s emotional 32-28 loss to Alabama, a game many are calling the greatest SEC championship game ever.
In the exchange at a post-game press conference, Oliver asked Richt: “There are some people, whether its fans, media or whomever else, that may want to make further conclusions about you or your quarterback specifically in big games. Would you have any response to those people?”
Richt: “I don’t know what you’re saying. Why don’t you just say it straight up what you’re trying to say.”
Oliver: “There will be people who say that you and Aaron Murray specifically come up short on the biggest stage against the biggest opponents. Do you have any response to that?”
Richt bluntly asked if it was Oliver who was saying that, and Oliver responded that’s what he hears on the radio every day. Richt then says, “That’s for you to worry about then — if that’s what you say then I’ll answer the question; if you think other people are saying that, I’m not worried about that.”
After leaving the press conference, Richt returned briefly and said, “If anybody thinks our guys didn’t play their tail off, and Aaron Murray didn’t play his tail off, they’re crazy. That’s unbelievable that anybody would even bring that up.”
Oliver said his first reaction after the exchange was, “I really wish I could undo the last 90 seconds of my life.”
Was Oliver out of line in asking the question when he did or did Richt overreact to a legitimate question?
View the Oliver-Richt confrontation.
Listen to Oliver’s explanation.

UGA can have a policy in the future that restrict what kind of questions can be asked after a big loss. The policy can exclude the questions Chuck asked. That way, a report would never have to apologize because he ask the questions UGA doesn’t like.

What a loser – Chuck Oliver wasn’t even man enough to ask the question. I’m heartbroken over this lose, but I think this guy is a complete idiot. Grow a pair of balls and ask the question, if you want the answer……………..until then shut up!!!!! Goooooo DAWGS!!!

Fine gentlemen. It’s fine to ask anything, anytime. Call out a coach, call out a player, timing be damned. Inuindo’s, hearsay. No problem. So lets conceed that.
What then is the Problem if Richt wants to question a reporter right back if he is willing to personally taking responsibility for his question? he can’t make the reporter clarify his position?
Did he cuss at Oliver? Did he personally Insult Oliver? What exactly IS the problem with Richt’s responce?
You know, since tough questions are all fair game.

Oliver’s “question” was not even a question. It was a poorly worded, babbling attempt to use hearsay as bait while fishing for a sound byte. It was a pathetic excuse for journalism. As Richt said, if Chuck were actually asking him a straight up question, he would answer it.
The Dawgs showed up to play on Saturday. Their intensity was incredible, and for that they are getting a lot of respect around the country…whether the trolls like it or not.

I think the question should not have been asked at that point in time, because the dogs played a hell of a game and appeared to be motivated and well coached. However that being said only time will tell if the program uses this game as a turning point or reverts back to being poorly prepared and motivated like they have in the past. One issue that CMR doesn’t seem to understand is that no one questions whether or not the uga players “play their butt off” the dissatisfaction comes from the fact that the players seem poorly prepared for games and Bobo’s play calling is usually extremely predictable. Also, game and half time adjustments seem rare. These are the concerns not whether or not Murray “played his butt off”

The most intresting thing about the expert Gurus questions and answers is that they use emotion to excite the idiots that think they are True Great fans with passion for UGA AND any of the OTHER SCHOOLS to make their MONEY. Now, some idiot gets on board and says ,yea man it should be asked or said it comes with the job. If you are a true fan understand the importance stability of Coaches and players in a program that gives you an oportunity to be at the Top of Poles every year to have an opportunity to play for a national championship every year. You have a right to your opinion, to question decisions made during a game. You should not be an axx hxx about it. The plays that are in question are not the only plays that could have helped win or lose a game. IF YOU KNOW FOOTBALL you can watch film at look at every players position and come up with an excuse to blame them. If you are a true UGA FAN YOU SHOULD UPLIFT THOSE PLAYERS AND COACHES AND give them the up most respect for playing in the NATONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. There is no doubt that was the best championshp game in years. UGA FANS BUILD ON IT. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT you have as a program until become an AUBURN.

Does ANYBODY on here think if SABAN was on the UGa sideline and Richt was on the Bama sideline that SABAN would have lost?

It was a completely stupid question. I could see if Murray threw 3 INTs, including a pick six and just looked horrible in that game but he didn’t. He played a heck of a game against a great team. How many QB’s do you think could have orchestrated that 1:00 drive down the field with no time outs and get the ball to the 8 for a chance to win against Bama’s defense? All you can ask for in a game like that is to have a chance to win and it came down to one play as to who would win. I’m disappointed but, it was a great game. Murray doesn’t stop the run and Murray doesn’t cover a WR who scored on a long TD pass. Also, look at Murray’s toughness. He played a great second half after being plastered on a dirty hit (that I hope the Bama player is suspended for against ND) in the first half. Great game by Murray.

With all those great recruiting classes I don’t know why Mark Richt isn’t more successful over in Athens. He must not be coaching them up like the old ballcoach.
I just hope Mark keeps his job. The Dawgs are my b*tches any way. First when I was at Florida and now at Carolina.

I’m a big DAWG fan, but the truths the truth, the fact that AM and CMR both have lost the big game so many times is a true fact, but AM and all the DAWGS both played hard but come up short again. Chuck Oliver only asked the question, and CMR took offense to it. But no matter how upset CMR was and still is, it’s still a cold hard fact and the truth! And maybe the truth hurts sometimes!

I think it’s funny when Gators, Tide, and Jackets come on here talking about Richt’s response when Spurrier, Saban, Johnson, and even Meyer have put the media in their place for asking stupid questions regularly in their careers. When Richt does it all of a sudden he’s a bad person.

DA…..I don’t think we are mad at RICHT at putting the reporter in his place. It is the FACT that Richt has avodied that question on his Radio Call in Show for years and NOW it is in his face and he still wants to avoid it. RICHT has heard this question many times just not in public with a MIC for him to Answer to be placed in print.

In my opinion, that was the most classless, terrible, ill-timed and stupid question I have ever heard an otherwise well-informed journalist utter. Although I do appreciate the apology, I don’t think I will ever listen to his talk show on 680 the Fan quite the same way again. This from a man that claims to have been a prior coach and should have understood the emotions of the moment. UGA came within four yards and less than ten seconds from playing for the national championship. Of all the questions that could have been asked at the moment, is this all you can think of? Inexcusable.

Exactly right. assssuming that was even a queation, which it wasn’t. It was a fishing expedition, based on some “others ight say”.
But say it was posed in a manner in which a direct question was asked in order to solicite information.
WHY the heck ask it after a game in which the basis for the guestion LEAST applies of all the game in which “you and your Qb” did not get a victory on the day? The timing was not poor because of the the obvious hurt from losing, the timing was wrong, becasue he had the wrong game to ask it.
